#jedimindmeld: The force for Obama is strong here

(CNN) – Live on, the story does.

After the nerd-world lit up following President Barack Obama's now-famous Star Wars mix-up on Friday, Lucasfilm, the company behind the movie series, has officially weighed in.

Obama said Friday he didn't have the power to "somehow do a Jedi mind meld with these folks and convince them to do what's right" on reaching a deal to avert the forced spending cuts. The comment came in response to a question from CNN Chief White House Correspondent Jessica Yellin after the president met with top congressional leaders from both parties.

For anyone fluent with the two sci-fi ventures, the jumble was obvious: Obama conflated the Jedi mind trick with the Vulcan mind meld (duh!). The debate brought out "Star Trek" stars George Takei (Mr. Sulu) and Leonard Nimoy (Spock), a comical response from the White House, and even a petition calling for an apology from the president (It has 53 signatures).

But a spokeswoman from Lucasfilm said the president wasn't too far off the mark.

"President Obama might have created a mash-up of Star Wars friends at Lucasfilm and Star Trek but he also might be a lot more savvy with his knowledge of Star Wars than anyone is giving him credit for," Lynne Hale said. "In some of the Star Wars spin-off books there is a 'Force Meld'."

She continued: "All of President Obama's friends at Lucasfilm would love to believe that his expertise in Star Wars knowledge runs deep..."

So what is a "Force Meld"? Besides an excellent trivia answer, a force meld is apparently "a technique where a number of Force users join their minds together through the Force, drawing strength from each other," according to "Wookieepedia," the Star Wars wiki.

No matter what Obama meant to say, he'll likely still feel support from the Star Wars community. After all, Star Wars creator George Lucas was a major donor of Obama's election bids. And the president has wielded both Star Wars and Star Trek references in the past–with success.

    Dear CNN reporters;

You are wrong. There is no mix up. the "Jedi mind Meld" refers to activites that take place in the Star Wars Expanded Universe. Their novels, if you will.

A Jedi mind meld is when several Jedi in combat, most often in Starfighters, reach out and bond at the mental level to coordinate their attacks and centralize their thinking.

The concept is that in a close dogfight, instead of verbally warning your wingman that someone is on their tail, your wing man would feel you think it and would act accordingly.

Dont get me wrong, Obama is no Jedi. But you guys are reporters. Your entire job is fact checking. Dont let me down.

No... this country is doomed because most of you are humorless automatons who are too busy fearing the conservative/liberal/occupy/tea party conspiracy that is "Going to Ruin Everything for Good Americans" and you are missing the opportunity to have a good chuckle at someone's unintentional screw up.

At least Ray and Rudy get the concept of humor. The rest of you are just tedious.

Obama is right here although he may have used the wrong terminology.

    Jedi can use mind melding.

Most Americans do have some idea of how bad the economic outlook is. The problem is that the right wing either does not understand or refuses to acknowledge why the country's finances are in the shape that they are in.
For example, did you know that annual federal spending doubled beween FY2001 to FY2009? Those were the Bush years, which saw an annual year to year growth of 7-9% in spending. All of the spending growth was written into law during the Bush years. Did you know that the number of federal employees DOUBLED during the Bush years? The "out of control spending" that the right wing loves to whine about was caused by the right wing when they ran the Congress and the White House.

And all without TRILLION dollar deficits because of the low unemployment rate and booming economy! (50 consecutive months of economic growth)

And then there is the Obama Socialist Economy of trillion dollar deficits as far as they can project, almost 8% unemployment, the lowest labor participation rate in decades, almost no economic growth, massive tax increases and record numbers food stamp recipients. After 8 years of Obama's clueless and destructive economic policies, the Bush years will be remembered as the good old days, because they WERE good, very good.

"Another narcissistic attempt to distract from Obama's severley failed policies."

Please list the policies that wouldn't of failed under Romney? We know you won't be able to because there just aren't any

Romney succeeded at everything he did, except convince the American people he could save the country from the failure in the Whitehouse. For that lack of intelligence, the American people will pay a dear price over the next 4 years, just as they have over the last 4 years. Just wait until the disaster called Obamacare kicks in and 20 million Americans lose their existing healthcare thanks to Obama and the Democrats, not to mention the tripled cost of it over the initial lies, I mean projections.

thanks chicken little. We'll get along fine. As for you and the rest, go build your bunkers so the gubmit can't push its soshiulist mooslim idears on yous all. BTW you forgot Flip Flopney's "failure" in his previous POTUS bid

Hey Tracy, Obama told the folks in Oslo that War is sometimes necessary. That he, in fact, was going to give orders that resulted in the death of our soldiers & probably innocent civilians. Any U.S. Prez needs to weigh the threat to AMERICAN Interests against the costs, human & financial, before ordering military action. In my opinion, Obama has thus far done a much better job than his predecessor.

Hey Sonny, Obama also said he would have all our troops home by now, more then once, but hey, you keep licking your "Lord and Savior" (that's what Jamie Foxx likes to call Obama) boots and give him a pass time after time after time after time.

"Obama has thus far done a much better job than his predecessor"...................baaaaaaahahahahaha, you're a real funny guy, Sonny!

My problem with his statement wasn't the Jedi reference. It was him saying he can't force them to stay and negotiate when they are leaving to board a plane. It was them who would have had to force Obama to stay. Obama wasn't even in Washington the whole time – he was on his own plane flying around trying talking to everyone BUT those in Congress.

Obama isn't much of a comedian. He mixes in his lame humor to the conciliatory White House Press in attempt to soften his continuous negativity and bullying. He invents the sequester with Jack Lew 18 months ago travels around campaigning about its ills without giving or working towards an alternate solution then blames others and jokes about it. We are leaderless. Pathetic.

So you are calling the Congressional Budget Office "chicken little"??? Well, of course YOU will get along just fine because you'll likely be getting free government healthcare that working men and women must pay for while losing their own healthcare only to be left to go apply for government healthcare.

So bottom line is Obama and the Democrats LIED yet again to the American people. You will NOT be able to keep your existing healthcare coverage. And to add insult to injury, you will be taxed more to pay for the "free" healthcare of millions of others. Obamacare taxes (20 new ones) were designed to cover the initial falsified amount of $900 billion. So where is the added cost of $1.8 trillion going to come from? Answer: New or higher taxes on working Americans.

Democrats that voted for Obamacare will be targetted for removal in 2014. Count on it.

Perhaps George Lucas should think twice about financial support for someone who doesn't even watch his movies.

Actually, Bush's own budget advisor had publicly predicted trillion dollar deficits within a decade because of the increased spending and costly tax cuts. Those remarks led directly to VP Cheney uttering, "Deficits don't matter." They also fired the man, former Indiana Governer Mitch Daniels.

What Jedi have is called "Jedi Battle Meditation" where a Jedi can increase the efficiency of a combat squadron by subconsciously improving how well they function as a unit, similar to the way a basketball team might have "great chemistry" after playing together for years. This concept was created by Timothy Zahn in "Heir to the Empire" and has been slightly expanded upon, but it does not directly involve actual telepathy, which is the basis of Vulcan "mind melds".

Obama surely does not know about this, however. He has not read Zahn. He hasn't even read the constitution, apparently.

When people start blaming Romney - the person who was NOT elected President - it shows just how empty and leaderless the current Administration really is.
