Spending cuts rile Christie, who blasts lack of 'leadership'

(CNN) - New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie wasn't kidding when he said last year that "when the president does things that deserve scorn, I'll give him scorn."

Those comments were made after the Republican governor received some blowback from members of his party for praising the president following Superstorm Sandy. He defended himself by saying "When the president does things that deserve praise, I will give him praise," adding he would also freely criticize Obama if he disagreed with his actions.

On Monday, that criticism came during a press conference, when Christie described a lack of "real leadership" in Washington as massive forced spending cuts take effect.

"Real leadership would get this fixed," Christie said during the event. "You get everybody in the room and you fix it, and you don't let them leave until you fix it."

Obama himself was asked last Friday why he couldn't do just that, responding to a question from CNN Chief White House Correspondent Jessica Yellin by saying he can't "force Congress to do the right thing."

"I am not a dictator, I'm the president," he said while speaking to reporters in the White House Press Briefing Room. "Ultimately, if Mitch McConnell or John Boehner say we need to go to catch a plane, I can't have Secret Service block the doorway."

Christie seemed incredulous Monday that something more couldn't be done to avert the massive spending cuts, which took affect Friday. And he appeared perplexed that a deal hasn't yet been struck to shift the spending cuts to other areas of the federal budget.

"I don't understand it. I don't understand why they haven't fixed it already. It seems to me that it should be pretty easy to fix," Christie said, adding later that he thought Congress needed to address spending on entitlements like Medicare and Social Security.

"The worst thing about sequester in my view is that they're not spending any time talking about entitlement spending, which is where we need to focus on over the long haul to make a big difference in terms of our long term fiscal health as a country."

Why would we want to "avert the massive spending cuts?" The only problem with the "sequester" is that it doesn't sequester enough–it should have included wastes-of-money like Medicaid and all the rest of the coddle-the-welfare-bums programs politicians keep using to buy votes.

Well, maybe Obama waiting until the Friday when things were to take effect to even discuss it could be described as a TOTAL LACK of LEADERSHIP.

"You get everybody in the room and you fix it, and you don't let them leave until you fix it."

He must be talking about strong-arm New Jersey tactics. How would the President not allow them to leave if they wanted to? Forcibly keeping them against their will has a name – kidnapping! I am sure it is all just talk from an angry governor, but if he is really serious about how he would handle it if he were president he would never get my vote.

Christie may just be the only republican with a heart left. I hope they don't try to kill him off.

If we had a real leader in the House it would help. What we have is a blamer who never ever takes responsibility. He is by far the worst speaker this country has ever seen, completely inept.

Christie is just making noise for the sake of making noise. Saying that Pres. Obama should sit down with the key players in a room and not let anyone leave until they work out a solution is simple grandstanding. He's suggesting that the POTUS should kidnap people and hold them against their will. But that is bully that is Christie talking. Using colorful metaphors makes great sound bites for some people. For the rest of us, it makes for just cause to deem him unfit for the White House.

I don't think any of this matter anymore it is all acedemic. This is all about how a bunch of rich people spent a god awful lot of money and try to take over the country and failed. They are all mad as heck and want payback at anyones expense. They want their R. O. I.. Its not obama, it is the power brokers. It is not congress, its a small group of grumpy old men that see the world evolving around them, they want it bought to a screeching halt. Christie is right about one thing. This "SO-CALLED" problem can be fixed on the high side of five min.. 1+1=2, any first grader can add and subtract.

Fine, let some of us in the building, we'll block the door and give them a piece of our mind.

    @Gabbo,
Obama is not "underqualified" he is "unqualified"
Christie is beginning nothing more than another big spending RINO.
We need real conservatives who are not scared of real budget cuts to step up and save America and our Christian values.

If the President ever worked for a real Corporation in his life, he would know how to balance a budget and manage expenses. But since he has been in politics his entire life, he himself and all other politicians are ignorant in managing anything.

What massive cuts do these people keep talking about? With all the areas of waste in our government, not one inconvenience was imposed on the elected elite. Not one! They stuck it to the working class plain and simple. That’s your elected folks. The people you voted for! However, you will not change your mind or your voting habits. So what is the use in complaining? You vote a do nothing failure as a leader back into office for another 4 years of neglect and division. Voted the 113th back in 80% same as before. So this is the news? Whatever! I say hit us harder! We deserve it!

  22. Core republican Values

Core republican value #6: Poor people deserve to be poor, and they must be punished for being poor, because they must be lazy. Otherwise, why would they be poor? Republicans would rather kick 20,000 kids out of Head Start, than cut $ billions in oil and gas corporate welfare.

"Our number one goal should be to make Pres. Obama a one term president." Sen. Minority Leader, Mitch McConnell
"I will not compromise on my values." House Speaker, John Boehner [same interview as "I got 98%"]

Pres. Obama does not need to blame anyone. The Republicans have already spoken for themselves.
