Paul Ryan: Democratic budget 'blowing smoke'

(CNN) - Three days after he unveiled the GOP budget, Rep. Paul Ryan stayed focused on the country's fiscal problems during his address to the Conservative Political Action Conference and took a dig at the Democrats' own budget proposal in the Senate.

"You know, this has been a really big week. We got white smoke from the Vatican and we got a budget from the Senate," he said to applause. "But when you read it, you find that the Vatican's not the only place blowing smoke this week."

Unlike Ryan's plan, the Democratic proposal doesn't claim to balance the budget in 10 years. It also includes new sources of revenue from taxes and doesn't touch entitlement reform as much as Republicans would like.

"By living beyond our means, the government is sending us a message," Ryan said. "It is saying if you plan ahead, if you make sacrifices for your kids, if you save, you're a sucker. It is brazenly stealing from our children and from young adults and it has to stop."

Ryan's budget, meanwhile, has no new taxes, big changes to Medicare, a repeal of President Obama's health care reform, and support for the controversial Keystone XL pipeline.

The 2012 Republican vice presidential nominee, who's considered a potential 2016 presidential candidate, also chided the recent pattern in Congress of lawmakers waiting until the 11th hour to reach a deal.

"When politicians budget by crisis, what happens? They make deals in the dead of night far away from public view, lobbyists sneak in their pet projects and government grows. Cronyism spreads. It crowds out our communities and as it lurches from crisis to crisis, it freezes people in fear. In effect, we levy an uncertainty tax on everyone in the nation."

Good "catch" line, I have to admit. But coming from someone who has been blowing smoke at us for years, it generates a laugh but is "hollow" in substance.

Hey, Ryan, you sure know about smoke, don't you? Go back to math class and offer a budget that includes some, and maybe someone will take you seriously.

I guess things have got to crash and crash hard before the Democrats will ever take this business seriously.

Makes me wonder if the GOP had not won the House in 2010, can you imagine how screwed over we would be? It's not like the Democrats are ever going to fix any of this, much less even acknowledge it exists. It's very scary and good reason why Reid, Plelosi and Obama should be tarred and feathered.

Stop trying to repeals the Affordable Health Care Act. If your budget does not cut Defense than the biggest part of the budget remains unchanged. Game time is over. Cut your pay and get to work.

Paul Ryan is living on borrowed ... time. (So to speak.) Having spent his entire career blowing smoke at his constituents, they've finally begun to see beyond his ... words ... and are actually starting to look into his ... deeds. The past 6 terms or so of deeds. NOT a pretty picture. But, hey. An ego is an ego is an ego.

Reminds me of someone else. Ah, yes. Mr. Mittens.

We already have numbers showing that Ryan wants to give millionaires an average $200K+ tax break while keeping his budget "revenue neutral," which means the lost revenue from the wealthy would have to be made up somewhere. Guess where. He is what we thought he was. Moreover, nothing he said above is at all substantive or constitutes cogent analysis...just talking point buzz word salad fit for a gossip column....which apparently is what this is.

Way far stretch of analogy ever. He has to bring the whole story and tale another story to make his point. What a west of time? This is too much smoke from the point guard of the 1%ers.

No word concerning what's in the Democrats budget, just a slam on Ryan? I understand Ryan's budget needs to be slammed because it's so far out of touch, but come on. How about telling us WHY Ryan calls it blowin' smoke? Basic reporting guys!!!!!!!!!

Of course the Democrats are going to release a budget that is just as ideologically driven as yours, Mr. Ryan. What else did you expect to your own budget? Your budget has already been rejected by the voters, on local, state and national levels. Republicans ran on your budget in 2012 and you lost the White House and seats from both chambers of Congress.

The Democrats presented the budget that they ran on, and won on. Practice what you preach, Paul. Just because people *win* an election, do you expect them to sacrifice on their principles and values?

Blowing smoke hey. You lost the election Ryan. The people didn't like what you had to offer. So, enough already. The American people are sick of this bs in Washington. Now, get along and compromise and get this country fixed. YOU LOST

    Heh.

Dana Milbank's column in my daily newsrag compares Ryan's 'budget' to a game of Mad Libs, since it has so many blanks to fill–i.e.: the (blank) deduction will be removed and the (blank) will be (blanked) by (blanking) the (blank).

How can a sitting Representative and former VP candidate be so utterly, utterly clueless? I mean, really–this is the best they can do? What a colossal waste of the peoples' time and money this skinny skin suit continues to be: I've met High Schoolers with more budgetary credibility than this schmuck.

Ryan has admitted that while his budget calls for the repeal of Obamacare, it leaves the Obamacare taxes in place (he needs the revenue) and also contains the exact same $716 million in Medicare savings that he and Rmoney criticized President Obama for. Then he admitted that if Obamacare is not repealed (it won't be, and no one expects it to be) it will blow a giant hole in his proposal, thus making it impossible to balance the budget in 10 years.

Meanwhile, President Obama and Senate Dems are going to propose a budget that eliminates specific corporate tax loopholes and subsidies, and are honest in saying that their proposal will take more than 10 years to balance the budget because they do not want to damage the economy in the process.

So the guy who is blowing smoke (Ryan) is accusing the party that is being honest (the Dems) of blowing smoke - and idiot conservatives applaud. No wonder the GOP keeps losing elections.

Oh, you mean the Democratic Budget proposal that suggests auditing the Pentagon and other common sense items that would reduce the deficit to almost nonexistent by 2023? Why would lyin' think it's just "blowing smoke"? Oh, that's right – his deep-pocketed owners would no longer be able to drive trucks through the loopholes that currently exist.

The budget he's waving around is the one that was soundly rejected by voters in November 6, 2013. Gotta give lyin' credit for one thing – once he's bought, he stays bought.

Ryan acts as if the austerity experiments in Europe – UK, Italy, Greece, Spain, and Portugal are shining successes when in fact they are miserable failures. Why would he want to do the same thing to the USA? Why doesn't CNN educate their readers to this fact? Isn't that what reporting is all about, or is CNN content to carry the GOPs water with their false equivalency?

Blowing smoke frm the lying altar boy who has lied all through his career?
I hope the people in your Wisconsin district see you for what you are, a BIG time loser, and send you back to work at McDonalds except that they probably don't want you there either!
Did you "serve tables" there just like you washed perfectly clean pots and pans at the shelter? I have never been served at McDonalds so do you lie about everything and to every body?
Maybe you can better your real marathon time if youhave nothing better go do. I guess your family won't have to go on welfare since you are now another congressional millionaire!

"How about telling us WHY Ryan calls it blowin' smoke?"

Because, quite simply, that is absolutely the only option for the GOP/Teatrolls. It's an autonomic response for them at this point...hardwired into their hivemind and unable to be controlled by the executive functions of that hivemind's atrophied frontal lobe.
