Boehner on Obama quip: 'So much for the charm offensive'

(CNN) – President Barack Obama may be joking about enjoying his break from congressional gridlock, but House Speaker John Boehner says it's just a sign of mutual endearment.

"I'd rather be heckled than ignored. Or as I like to say, you only tease the ones you love," Boehner told CNN's Jake Tapper in an interview set to air Wednesday at 4 p.m. on "The Lead."

Earlier in the day, Obama quipped that "It's good to get away from Congress" as he deplaned in Tel Aviv, the first stop on his Mideast trip. The joke elicited a big laugh from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who was greeting Obama at the airport.

"So much for the charm offensive," Boehner joked Wednesday, referring to the recent outreach from Obama to members of Congress as they continue to haggle over spending cuts and taxes.

Boehner said the comment wouldn't have any real impact on the relationship between lawmakers and the president.

"The president's meeting with the president of Israel. He's got his legislative issues, the president's got his. Comes with the territory," Boehner said.

    We all know Boehner sat down and had a good cry about this.

    @Donna . Liberals do work and pay taxes. Conservatives could take a lesson in humility frommost lliberals. They don't need to spend all there time convincing the world how tuff they have it!!! Tell me how hard it is to spend mom and dads money to go to university or have them bankroll your start-up business.

    @Donna. And most republicans really know nothing about work, considering most are sitting in their double wides, eating very good off the democrat tax dollars. The republicans pander to the lowest common denominator. Uneducated rural whites with maybe 5 teeth in their heads. While the only people that benefit are the rich white males.

    Correct. He carries his Blackberry in his golf bag, and another in his pocket. Cart can be too far away at times.

    This republican "party," despite becoming more and more irrelevant, still keeps this "Bohner" guy as its leader. He is lacking in any credibility or respect outside his circle of fat old rich white guys. Why don't they wise up and get his face off the TV and newspapers. He is the poster boy of marginal intellect and foolish procrastination.

    I'm quite aware of the way government SHOULD work but since we have a non-working Congress, I'm enjoying his presence (if only for a short time) away from these hoodlums. Since you're so full of advice, why don't you try and get your congress to work? IF you can achieve that, then try and get them to work with the president instead of against him. Afterwards, come back and lecture me.

    It's not about where you do your work – golf course or ranch – it's about what you get done. Eight years of Bush gave us two wars, one of which was based on lies, the other because the administration ignored intel on terrorist threats; anti-gay politics, scare tactics, tax cuts for the rich, the shame of Katrina and the Great Recession.
    Four years and Obama has ended one war, drawn back on the other, worked tirelessly for the middle class, brought health care to the poor, battled for those left unemployed by that Great Recession, tax cuts for the middle class, and end to do don't ask, don't tell an effort to address gun violence - all this in the face of an opposition party that on day one refused to meet with him as they plotted his overthrow. No president has ever been treated with such disrespect and it can only be for on very ugly reason.

    Boehner has been known not to return phone calls, which is an inexcusable breach of protocol.

    Are you serious?
    For the fourth time in 5 years Obama hasn't submitted a budget on time.
    And the Senate submits it's first budget in 4 four years, which they are required by law to do annually.
    But that's OK with you. It's all Bush's fault or the Republicans.

    actually the congress isn't working because the democrat controlled senate is blocking everything passed and sent to it. no votes on anything thanks to democrat harry reid. obama and the democrats think it is the job of the republicans to just roll over and give them everything they demand. democrats are arrogant idiots. they talk about compromise but their definition means they get everything they want and republicans get nothing.

    well, the country is finally waking up to what obama and the democrats are about. it only took 4.5 years but it is happening as evidenced by recent poll numbers. obama simply cannot outrun 4.5 years of lies and excuses.

    Obama has spent far more time golfing, vacationing, attending celebrity events, campaign fund raising than he EVER spent with meeting members from Congress.
    ================================
    The President has never vacationed as much as Bush. Did you complain then or is goofing-off okay for a white guy?
    ================================

    Too funny.... uneducated libtards don't know the difference between working from home and golf games, vacationing in Hawaii/Florida/Colorado, celebrity events and campaign fund raisers. Not surprising though, since most have never worked a day in their lives and don't know what it is.

    Let's set the record staright. G.W. Bush holds the record for the most vacation time of any modern President. 1.8 years of his eight are officially listed as vacation.
    G.W. Bush loved golf as well and vowed about 5 years into his Presidency when asked about how all the time he spent on the links as a "war" President, that he wouldn't golf until the wars end. He was then caught about a month later on the golf course by a TV crew.
    Fitting rememberance for the worst President 10 years after the single biggest diplomatic and military disaster in American History- the invasion of Iraq.

    So what were Bush and Cheney working on when that guy got shot in the face?
    So what was Bush working on at the fund raiser as the dikes gave way in New Orleans during Katrina?
    How much did all of the phones and other POTUS gadgets cost to install in Crawford, and does he still have them?
