Obama account retweets Lennon bloody glasses image

(CNN) - The striking image of John Lennon's bloody glasses, tweeted by his widow Yoko Ono on Wednesday, was resent to President Barack Obama's 28 million Twitter followers Thursday as the debate over gun control continues.

The image shows the round lenses splattered with blood and the text: "Over 1,057,000 people have been killed by guns in the USA since John Lennon was shot and killed on 8 Dec 1980."

Lennon was shot by Mark David Chapman outside the New York City apartment building where he and Ono lived.

Ono later tweeted "The death of a loved one is a hollowing experience. After 33 years our son Sean and I still miss him."

Obama's Twitter account is run by Organizing for Action, the political group formed from the president's re-election campaign organization. One of its first major initiatives is promoting Obama's gun control proposals, which were unveiled in the aftermath of December's deadly school massacre in Connecticut.

One of the measures Obama advanced – a ban on assault weapons – was not included in a bill introduced by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid on Thursday. That legislation would expand background checks, improve school safety and restrict gun trafficking.

Eve of Destruction <-–where do you live ? in a gated community untouched by crime ? in a glass house with squeaky clean windows ? Or are you one of these politicians guarded by people with guns ? because in my state , crime is every where .

"How come no one is suggesting banning tobacco since it kills more people in a year worldwide than guns do."

Because people can't walk up to you and use their tobacco to instantly kill and dismember you.

I guess its just a numbers game to the righties, like points on a target. They are annoyed by the fact that over a million Americans have died as a result of a firearm being in the equation, yet they chime back with car fatalities. The car fatalities would have been even higher if seatbelts had not been mandated. Imagine that: a sensible regulation, being enforced actually has saved lives. Imagine if the Right bothered to fund the laws on the books-wait, that will never happen: too many tax cuts to give to millionaires.

"Me – Lennon's killer WAS/IS NOT mentally ill. He plead guilty."

It's absolutely hilarious that you would regurgitate this nonsense after someone already corrected this by pointing out that MDC plead not guilty by reason of insanity and his lawyers and experts were all arguing his delusions and mental problems prevented him from knowing right from wrong, etc., and that he only plead guilty later because God told him to.

  8. Just a question...

I wonder how many lives have been saved by law abiding citizens having guns...how many crimes were prevented because a citizen was able to protect him/herself against a criminal who has a gun illegally?

Before one can cure a disease, one must first correctly diagnose it. Most of America's gun violence is driven by the illegal drug trade. Heroin and cociane were made illegal with the Harrison Narcotics Act in 1914 and Marijuana was made illegal in 1935 with the Hemp Act. Nearly a century ago the U.S. decided that the "cure" of alcohol prohibition was worse than the disease and judiciously ended Prohibition. If one uses Chicago as a template, a city with some of the strictest gun laws in the nation and some of the highest rates of gun violence one must ask what drives this engine? Any rational person must conclude it is the profits of the drug trade that drive the engine of violence and not the tools themselves.
