Obama account retweets Lennon bloody glasses image

(CNN) - The striking image of John Lennon's bloody glasses, tweeted by his widow Yoko Ono on Wednesday, was resent to President Barack Obama's 28 million Twitter followers Thursday as the debate over gun control continues.

The image shows the round lenses splattered with blood and the text: "Over 1,057,000 people have been killed by guns in the USA since John Lennon was shot and killed on 8 Dec 1980."

Lennon was shot by Mark David Chapman outside the New York City apartment building where he and Ono lived.

Ono later tweeted "The death of a loved one is a hollowing experience. After 33 years our son Sean and I still miss him."

Obama's Twitter account is run by Organizing for Action, the political group formed from the president's re-election campaign organization. One of its first major initiatives is promoting Obama's gun control proposals, which were unveiled in the aftermath of December's deadly school massacre in Connecticut.

One of the measures Obama advanced – a ban on assault weapons – was not included in a bill introduced by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid on Thursday. That legislation would expand background checks, improve school safety and restrict gun trafficking.

yeah, Bill and that's the problem with the GOP. They want a huge federal structure to ensure each and every zygote reaches birth whereupon they fail to have any interest in it at all. Shoot, they support the rights of criminals to dismember school kids with military-grade weapons.

Her opinion is "The death of a loved one is a hollowing experience. After 33 years our son Sean and I still miss him."

Do you, Jason, have some disagreement with that??? ON WHAT BASIS???

1,057,000....in 33 years. A firearm didn't kill a single one of those 1,057,000. A PERSON killed each and evey one of them!

In the same 33 years, drunk drivers have murdered over 350,000. Do we blame the car? Or course not, we blame the drunk driver. So why do people blame guns when a Person uses one to kill someone?

Usual liberal emotional rhetoric and nothing else. Is this number too big? How many of this are criminals killed by other criminals, casualty of war on drugs, suicide? How many people was killed by cars, motorbikes, household chemicals, ladders, pools, high rise buildings, bridges?

How about dealing with mental health issues and leave gun ownership alone.Amazing how these VIPs have no problems taking firearms from the average person and surround themselves with bodyguards.Look at NYC Mayor Bloomingfriggenidiot who surrounds himself with a SWAT team.Thank God for the NRA.I am definately sending them more money.

So why are we trying to prevent Iran and NK from developing nukes???? Shouldn't we go after their leaders instead of trying to ban their guns and missles since guns and nukes aren't the problem according to your interpretation??? And why have we spent two decades in Iraq and Afghanistan and spent trillions of dollars trying to take away their guns if guns aren't the problem??? Hypocrisy!

Gun owners and the 2nd Amendment ARE the problems – or should I say – the plague of America. You leave your weapons around like candy for anyone to pick them up and run off to commit crime, including mass murders. Amendments can be added or removed as deemed necessary and for the betterment of the country. We have police and the military. We don't need anymore then that. The 2nd Amendment has no place in 21st Century America anymore as it is outdated and a public safety issue. I am so proud that such good leaders as President Obama, VP Bin, Mr. Bloomberg, Yoko, and DIrector Michael Moore are fighting the good fight to rid the streets of these military style machine guns and high capactiy magazines that serve no other purpose then to cut down as many people as possibe in the shortest period of time. You call these self-defense weapons? The joke is on you gun lovers.

Yes, we blame the drunks. We take away their RIGHT to operate a motor vehicle. Your argument says to turn them loose on the roads again. "The way to stop a bad guy with a gun is with a good with a gun." That means turn the drunks loose on the roads again, and lets' get drunk ourselves and conduct a demolition derby on the expressway. Listen to yourselves.

C'mon Bill, this isn't hard. The murders and deaths occured because guns were used. You know, weapons that are designed to cause death make the act of killing much more effective.
    Want a comparisopn?
Sandy Hook Elementary- a killer uses an AR-15 on 21 1st graders. He not only kills them, he dismembers their tiny bodies.
China- a nut with a knife attacks a classroom full of 2nd graders- 22 injuries, no deaths.

@Joey JoJo–Your comment about celebrities is so lame. Ronald Reagan was surrounded by bodyguards. The heavily trained and armed Secret Service type and still got shot. President Ford (or was it Carter, age dulls the memory) was surrounded by the same types, yet Squeaky Fromm pulled a pistol and pulled the trigger at close range, luckily for Ford the gun did not go off. John Lennon had no bodyguard that I am aware of and was killed. Probably one of the most peaceful guys on the planet. The attacks against Ono posted here are absolutely sickening. Obviously she is still hurting for a man she loved very much. Some of the comments I have read have got to come from truely sick minds, and you think you should own a gun?

Why must this President support the crazy of all crazies? This is a man who associates with some of the weirdest people and holds them up as some kind of American icons? Bill Ayers? Bernadette Dorn? Van Jones? Bill Mahr? Rev. Wright? Yoko Oh-no! Her only claim to fame and her only talent is having been married to John Lennon.

    A) The shooter was mentally ill, the libs support the "right" of the mentally ill to not be required to get treatment, or take medication.
    B) He was shot with a hand gun, an "assault weapons" ban would have made him just as dead.
    C) It happened in N.Y.C. where "gun control" is "working."

The stats given are complete fiction. The real numbers (for ALL murders) don't even come close. The REAL numbers are easily available on the FBI website that anyone with a brain can check. Typical liberal emotional appeal with no substance. By the way, Under President Clinton, the Department of Justice conducted a survey in 1994 that placed the usage rate of guns used in personal defense at 1.5 million times per year. This was from the National Institute of Justice, not a politician and a far-left socialite.Gee, who should we trust?
