Obama account retweets Lennon bloody glasses image

(CNN) - The striking image of John Lennon's bloody glasses, tweeted by his widow Yoko Ono on Wednesday, was resent to President Barack Obama's 28 million Twitter followers Thursday as the debate over gun control continues.

The image shows the round lenses splattered with blood and the text: "Over 1,057,000 people have been killed by guns in the USA since John Lennon was shot and killed on 8 Dec 1980."

Lennon was shot by Mark David Chapman outside the New York City apartment building where he and Ono lived.

Ono later tweeted "The death of a loved one is a hollowing experience. After 33 years our son Sean and I still miss him."

Obama's Twitter account is run by Organizing for Action, the political group formed from the president's re-election campaign organization. One of its first major initiatives is promoting Obama's gun control proposals, which were unveiled in the aftermath of December's deadly school massacre in Connecticut.

One of the measures Obama advanced – a ban on assault weapons – was not included in a bill introduced by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid on Thursday. That legislation would expand background checks, improve school safety and restrict gun trafficking.

Cool one person destroyed the beatles, the other is working on destroying the freedoms and liberties our country was founded upon. How many of these people killed by guns were in the various conflicts orchastrated by our government in bosnia, kosovo, iraq, iraq2, and afghanistan?

Yeah, and we're awash in shootings here in FL because of "stand your ground." Just this week, two repairmen were shot when they arrived at a home that they were CALLED TO to make repairs – another resident thought they were being robbed and shot them without question – in broad daylight. And the NRA thinks that just arming everybody is the answer. It would be a joke except that it's tragic that people have to suffer being shot while just out doing their jobs. And the news headlines are focused on the rich guy who shot the teen in cold blood for playing his music too loud. He pumped over 2 dozen shots into the back seat of the SUV filled with teens because it was too loud, then claimed that they shot at him. The police confirmed there were no weapons in the car. So the 16 year old is now proved innocent of aiming a virtual gun at a hater, but of course that doesn't matter because the 16 year old is dead. But the hater has lots of money, good lawyers and the NRA all lobbying to get him out on bail. He's "promised" the judge that he'll turn in his passport. He hasn't promised that he won't shoot any other innocents he doesn't like.

What kind of sick person takes their dead husbands bloody glasses puts them on a table in a posed position to take a picture of them?
    -------------------------------------------------
A person made sick from the distraught of having their husband so violently taken from them and determining right then and there to have vivid and irrevocable reminder of his death in the hopes that it would shock others into action that would prevent other deaths like his...maybe?

Who cares what Yoko Ono thinks. This is not someone who has historically respected laws when she didn't agree with them. Would she be demanding knives be outlawed if he was killed that way? Or cars be outlawed if he were hit by a car? Crazy people do crazy things...how about some active support for improving laws and support for the mentally ill? That I could get behind. I cannot, however, justify taking away someone's ability to protect their home just because someone else broke the law.

I will never give up my "Right to Bare Arms" and I will never give up my weapon that holds 30 rounds of freedom.

What is next, turn the US into the USSR or NAZI Germany.

What they are missing is that Lennon was shot by a mentally ill idiot with a hand gun.
The mentally ill idiot in CT used his mother legal weapons to kill.

There is no Cure for Stupid.

If Omaba puts a ban on weapons. then Obama will want to modify the "Bill of Rights".

I'll never give up my weapons. After this is the U.S. of A.

The question is when do 2nd amend believers march to washington with our unconcealed weapons and let them feel the earth move under their feet, an unannnounced movement of peaceful demonstration to show how much we believe in that right, and that no one, no one, government, army, world organization, will take our weapons, unless our nations constituents will give up our nukes, our soldiers, tanks, policemen, security guards, then we can all eat grass together and sing songs in unison like whos from whoville as nation after nation joins us,
wake up, grass is alive too, hah, apparently when were bullied we just look the bully n the eye and sing, hold his hand, hell no, we open a can of wupass, fight fire with fire, batman dont dodge bullets,
u want my guns, my kids, my dog, my girl, my flag n my yard, come take em!!! Freedom will ring loud.

canada has 1/10th the population of the u.s., the exact same movies, tv shows and video games. 1/10th the amount of people with mental problems. 1/3 the amount of guns per capita, but has around 750-800 gun deaths a year versus 32,000 in the u.s. read my lips:THE U.S. HAS A GUN PROBLEM!

And 1,320,000 people were killed in motor vehicle accident in the same period. Was it the motor vehicle's fault or possibly an error of the driver. The pictures are much worse than glasses spattered with blood. I think we should ban motor vehicles.

Drugs kill more people than guns do.
    -------------------------------------------------
Perhaps, but people ON drugs, or off/on their prescribed mood-altering drugs who have access to guns can and have committed incredible carnage.
There was a study recently that concluded that the common denominator in all of these mass killings here and in the U.K. were young people who had been prescribed mood-altering drugs.

I am not particularly fond of Yoko Ono, but her husband WAS murdered. So, yeah. I do feel she has a right to speak her mind on gun control. Just as anyone else who has had to overcome violence has a right to speak against violence. I don't really think that as a country we need to start the name calling because we don't agree with her lifestyle (or John Lennon's lifestyle). I guess I never asked what political affiliation a victim had registered with before I gave my empathy to their families. Silly me.

Kill the gun show loophole, make gun checks better so they include a database of the mentally ill, hold people accountable for crimes committed with their guns so they'll take better care of them, and get more medical help for the mentally ill. The hardest and most important one on that list will be getting help for the mentally ill. Our healthcare system is awful, and the Republicans are doing their best to ensure it never gets any better. Yet they are the ones saying the problem is the mentally ill people and not the guns.

Chapman's legal team put forward an insanity defense based on expert testimony that he was in a delusional and possibly psychotic state at the time, but nearing the trial Chapman instructed his lawyer to plead guilty based on what he had decided was the will of God.

I so agree with you Lynda on your entire post.
Someone else on thread alluded to the fact that people were okay with the number of folks that had been murdered through the use of guns because they were not people that they knew.
We've become a cold-blooded, unfeeling country. Judgmental not only in regards to our politics but also in regards to the victims of said politics, even if they've been murdered.

"I don't think there were any actual AR-15's in Viet Nam–zero"

Actually, it was a couple thousand, not zero. Project AGILE was conducted by the Advanced Research Projects Agency to test the AR-15's performance and whether it would be a suitable infantry-style weapon to give to the allied Vietnamese to help them fight off the commie incursion. They were thrilled with its military performance and the large wounds it was reportedly making.

As for pointing out that the M-16 uses a nearly identical NATO round, that doesn't help your argument if you're trying to make the AR-15 sound more "non-military." The M-16 is probably the first weapon 80%+ of the people in the country would name if you asked them to name you the first military rifle they could think of. And, given all of tis reported problems, including the jamming, its actually an inferior weapon to the AR-15.

Who cares what Yoko Ono thinks? Her opinion doesn't matter any more or less than the guy who sells me my bourbon.. She can contact her elected representatives in Congress just like me. If she's a US citizen, that is. If not, then what she thinks carries no weight at all in this country with Congress.

guns don't kill is so lame why do you keep saying it. They don't go foo by themselves. Sure drugs kill people but we don't stop trying to enforce drug laws ? Cars kill to and we make sure they are registered and people by insurance. What's the deal with guns do you really think the government is going to take them?? Get a life the NRA uses nothing but scare tactics and the people fall for it.
