Bloomberg's gun violence group launches $12 million major ad buy

(CNN) - New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg's anti-gun violence group will launch a $12 million ad buy next week, the group's largest buy yet in the effort to influence the debate over gun-control measures.

Erika Soto Lamb, spokeswoman for Mayors Against Illegal Guns, says the ads will begin airing in 13 states on Tuesday and are timed to put pressure on both Republican and Democratic senators home for the congressional Easter recess.

Biden to be in South Carolina ahead of special congressional election

Washington (CNN) - Vice President Joe Biden will attend a South Carolina Democratic dinner the weekend before a special election to fill a vacant congressional seat in the state, a source familiar with his plans told CNN, though he doesn't plan to campaign for the Democratic candidate Elizabeth Colbert Busch.

Colbert Busch will face off against either former congressman and governor Mark Sanford or former Charleston County Councilman Curtis Bostic in the May 7 general election for the 1st Congressional District.

Biden blasts Republicans at event with House Democrats

(CNN) - Vice President Joe Biden's meeting with House Democrats on Saturday was nothing of the "charm offensive" that brought his boss to Capitol Hill earlier this month.

Instead, the vice president chided congressional Republicans, claiming negotiating with them was nearly impossible.

Battle over Obamacare continues on law's third anniversary

(CNN) - Some see 2013 shaping up as 2012 all over again - at least on the issue of health care.

The dispute over President Barack Obama's signature health reform law, which he signed three years ago on Saturday, is back on. Democrats say the law will expand access to health care and rein in the rising costs of healthcare. Republicans say the law is bad news for the health care system and the economy.

First on CNN: O'Malley takes aim at Haley in South Carolina

(CNN) - Democratic Gov. Martin O'Malley of Maryland will unleash a blistering critique of his Republican counterpart in South Carolina, Nikki Haley, in remarks to a Democratic party conference in Charleston on Saturday.

O'Malley plans to attack Haley, who is up for re-election next year, as "tea party Republican" who cares more about voter ID laws than expanding health care access and education for South Carolinians, according to early excerpts of his speech provided to CNN.

Obama urges vote on assault weapons ban

(CNN) - President Barack Obama called on the Senate to vote on a controversial ban on semiautomatic firearms modeled after military-style assault weapons, despite dim predictions from Senate leadership that such a ban will have any luck passing the upper chamber.

"These ideas shouldn't be controversial – they're common sense. They're supported by a majority of the American people. And I urge the Senate and the House to give each of them a vote," Obama said in his weekly address.
