Biden blasts Republicans at event with House Democrats

(CNN) - Vice President Joe Biden's meeting with House Democrats on Saturday was nothing of the "charm offensive" that brought his boss to Capitol Hill earlier this month.

Instead, the vice president chided congressional Republicans, claiming negotiating with them was nearly impossible.

Despite what he called the "decisive victory" Democrats won in November, Biden said of the Republicans it is "quite clear they didn't get the message" - or worse yet, "they got the message and they don't think it matters."

"The country's ready to move and we have a House of Representatives that's in the way right now," he said, according to the one pool reporter that the White House allowed into the event.

After months of deadlock and missed deadlines to resolve government spending matters, Democrats and Republicans on Capitol Hill agreed to a continuing resolution this week and avoided the prospect of a government shutdown next week.

That deal keeps in place the $85 billion in forced spending cuts, or sequester, which triggered March 1 after the two parties couldn't break their gridlock. Biden was involved in the December fiscal cliff negotiations that pushed sequestration back from January to March.

On five occasions, Biden said leaders in the House - which is controlled by Republicans - called him days or even hours after he had sat down for negotiations with them and they said, "What we agreed to, Joe, we can't do."

"The reason this is so dysfunctional now - with whom do you make a deal? With whom do you speak to get something done?" he said. "There is nobody you can sit across the table from and shake hands, make a deal with."

He specifically named two Republican members of Congress, drawing laughter for characterizing House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan's budget was "absolutely" a Ryan budget. He also called Sen. Rand Paul - who recently held a 13-hour filibuster demanding information from the Obama administration - "a fine man, he's a decent man."

Biden spoke at the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee issues conference in New York, and promised those who support an issue he has campaigned for personally would see support from the party and others.

"The number-one thing we can do to improve gun safety is to get some of this common sense stuff done," he said, going on to specifically reference background checks. "Why the hell we can't show the courage by standing up and doing what the American people want us to do?"

Biden promised Democrats from districts where gun control is a tough issue would see help from advocates like New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg. Biden and the mayor were joined by families connected to the Newtown, Connecticut, school shooting on Thursday in New York, and spoke out in favor of background checks. Other measures such as a ban on assault weapons do not currently have enough support in either chamber to reach the president's desk.

Biden assured the lawmakers on Saturday that Bloomberg is ready to spend "a great deal of his own money" on the issue, according to the pool report.

Criticizing Republicans in front of Democrats, who have a majority in the Senate but lost the House in 2010, isn't a challenge.

But in preparing for the next election, Biden urged the Democrats, "Please, please, whatever you were going to do, do twice what you were going to do."

The message is – BIDEN – is that we are not a dictatorship – and Republicans won the House – and there are more Republican Governors in the country than Democrat. You and Obama did not win by a landslide. And the president hasn't presented a budget in his entire presidency. You have real opposition in the country. YOU didn't get the message. And you just returned from a trip that cost tax payers a million dollars – so you need to SHUT UP, and start negotiating and compromising for the AMREICAN PEOPLE !

This is news? All Obama, Biden and the Democrats have done for nearly a decade now is attack and campaign non-stop. They have no clue on how to govern. They think spitting in peoples faces over and over is a way to get things done. They act more like a mob run union gang than legislators and leaders.

No use negotiating with Speaker Boehner because he doesn't have any control over his leadership team or caucus. He will go down in history as the worst and powerless Speaker of the House. Let's bring back Rep Nancy Pelosi.

FACT: Neither side of the aisle wants to compromise. Blaming the Republicans shows a lack of Democratic leadership. Biden's rhetoric is boorish and pedestrian.

A political party (like the GOP) that has slid into being post-policy, and simply reactionary and anti-President (and perhaps anti-American) is about impossible to negotiate with- it stands for nothing and only does the opposite of the leadership of our nation does- even when he supports formerly GOP positions.
The GOP's day as a political force are rapidly waning

these repubs cry like hell about the budget deficit on a daily basis, and for 4 years, they have done everything in their power to kill anything about deficit reduction, by refusing to compromise a inch. how the hell are they crying about something, when they ran from the grand bargain 3 times. they can say all this crap now, but history will find them to be they worst repub congress ever. theyve got fox news, cnbc, fox business news, and a hoard of right winged radio station filling the country of nonesense and child like fits, when they are the ones that are trying to destroy the country, because they don't like the president. i wonder what will happen 50 years from now when we look back into the history book, and recognise the plight of the most obstructionist repub congress ever.

CNN seems to have taken a hard right turn these days. The wording of articles, taking the Clorox to the line up of talking heads, examining Joe Biden's travel expenses..... I suspect they are looking at Faux 'News' 'success' and following suit. Really, CNN? I wish they wouldn't, but it will have to be buh-bye for me if this trend continues. I might check in to see which outrageous thing they are saying every six months or so, but it will not be on my list of channels or websites that automatically come up any longer.

Way to go Joe. I couldn't agree more. The GOP is the problem. The majority of Americans know it and the GOP just doesn't care. They are not doing the work of the country, they are doing the work of their special interest and outdated ideologies.

Even in a clear GOP defeat that can't muster the courage to look at their own faults and instead double down on their far-right wacko ideas.

I love Joe Biden because he doesn't mince words! I know people think he's dense, but he obviously didn't get to where he is, or speak from his gut, like he does, by being not-very-smart! Republican uncooperativeness is true, we've experienced it for 4 years, gun control is a must in a nation w/1000's of gun deaths each year! Right now members of congress are Still demanding more answers about Benghazi! a) There are only so many ways to answer the same questions, b) We are paying for this debacle! It seems that GOT-Party supporters are just defendind their party, not what's good for the nation, kinda like their party! I understand the people, I don't understand the politicians!!

The tendency for the Republicans to brand Obamacare as welfarism/socialism is a grossly misleading invective that infuses a strange definition to capitalist democracy. The questions are....does wealth possession means or equates high idea generation...what does America prefer , ideas or money,,,,how best can both grown...by growing only the rich or all segments of the society .
The only repub that sees to have come to grips with this current capitalist doctrine is Sarah Pauline.

the industrial revolution and its assembly lines are dead folks, they have packed up during the bush administration left to china and left small town america in disarray. the healthcare revolution is replacing those small towns with jobs. weve got the sales revolution and the healthcare revolutions right now. and the healthcare revolution is hiring more people since our country went off the cliff 5 years ago, than any other industries by far. i think this is why the repubs wants to stop this booming industry from existing. if they succeed on killing they healthcare revolution, the sales revolution will collaps. bringing back the great recession. this healthcare revolution is now the backbone of our country, if these repubs like it or not. i know the repubs and the rich own the media, because the dems only have msnbc, competing against, giganta fox news, cnbc, fox business news, and a hoard of right winged radio stations which out numbers dems radio station 20 to 1. this is why dems seems to be on the defense on every issue in our society. and if the bi-partisan media, like cnn, nbc, abc, cbs, and any of the morning shows, ever cast obama in a nutual light, they are labelled the lamestream media. this is why the repubs can do all these crazy thing and blame obama for it and get away with it. i like this cnn because this is one of the few places average joe like me can express our logic.

The significance of the Vice President addressing house Democrat in this manner leads you to believe the White House is very nervous about the the next election cycle and need to move now to help mitigate any long term risk.
