Bloomberg's gun violence group launches $12 million major ad buy

(CNN) - New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg's anti-gun violence group will launch a $12 million ad buy next week, the group's largest buy yet in the effort to influence the debate over gun-control measures.

Erika Soto Lamb, spokeswoman for Mayors Against Illegal Guns, says the ads will begin airing in 13 states on Tuesday and are timed to put pressure on both Republican and Democratic senators home for the congressional Easter recess.

In one of the spots, a man holding a shotgun says, "I believe in the Second Amendment and I'll fight to protect it. But with rights come responsibilities. That's why I support comprehensive background checks so criminals and the dangerously mentally ill can't buy guns."

A second spot shows the same man saying, "Background checks have nothing to do with taking guns away from anyone."

The spots will run in Arizona, Arkansas, Georgia, Indiana, Louisiana, Maine, New Hampshire, Nevada, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, Lamb told CNN.

Many gun-control advocates have argued background checks are key to reducing gun violence. Background checks are currently required on sales made by federally licensed firearms dealers, but Bloomberg, Vice President Joe Biden and others have pushed for universal background checks on every gun sale.

Biden and President Barack Obama have made the case for several changes to federal law including universal background checks and a ban on assault weapons, though Bloomberg has focused on the background checks, which appear more likely to pass Congress.

Bloomberg's group will coordinate over 100 demonstrations and events in support of universal background checks on Thursday, Lamb said. Many of those events are expected to be in the states where the ads will run.

Biden told Democratic congressmen earlier on Saturday that Bloomberg was prepared to invest "a great deal of his own money" in the debate over guns after noting that members of Congress who speak out on the issue but face challenges in their own district are "gonna have help."

Bloomberg has previously bought targeted ads, including one that aired in the Washington, D.C., area during the Super Bowl. His super PAC also invested in a congressional special election in Chicago.

The New York Times first reported news of a $12 million ad buy from the group.

I do not care as to what this Bloomberg says–this nation desperately needs this GUN-BAN LAW. Obama needs to sign it.
This the best president that has guts to sign, because he signed Healthcare Law ignoring BCBS it's lobby.

I love how the man with the shotgun who "believes in 2nd Amen. rights" has his finger on the trigger. Either he doesn't know anything about gun safety, or, and this seems more likely, he is a paid actor.

Good for Mayor Bloomberg........This is a man who acts on what he believes in...would that the rest of us could do the same ..........we try when the opportunity presents itself...such as in our votes...letters and phone calls to the important partys....but we can only try.... Mayor B. is in a position to be heard and he IS..!!!..... I hate to think this way.....but if these gun owners had lost someone they loved..they would understand how we feel and . maybe understand.. why WE ARE SO SERIOUS ABOUT SOME KIND OF GUN CONTROL. I find it hard to accept that their "right to own guns" is more important than our "right to live"....

I live in MA.. You can't purchase a handgun or even be in the possession of ammo without a license. To get a license you must take a safety class, submit an essay to local police asking for permission. They do a background check, then they send it to state police who does an addition background check.. Then 6-8 weeks later, you are approved or denied for the ability to buy a handgun.. Assault rifles are outlawed.. My question is... Aren't the states handling this? What's this new bill going to do that changes anything?. All it does is allow the central "federal" gov yet more controll over your life. Positions not from your area telling you what's best for you and your family..

I've said it before & I'll say it again, in the words of the gun enthuiasts themselves:Let's compare guns to cars! Guns should have, at the Very Least, the same regulations as a car! We should have to register them, go through hoops Every Time we buy/sell, have regular checks such as the annual registration/inspections/insurance, (w/out which you don't pass either), for auto-owners! It could be part of home/auto insurance in concealed carry states, since it's for protection! If we really want to take a stand against pointless gun violence in this country, then we have to do the difficult stuff! Responsible gun owners wouldn't care, since they're already doing the right thing, gun collectors would deal w/it & true criminals would have less to choose from! It would make it harder for small time crooks to buy a gun from a "friend" who needs a few quick bucks! If we're Not serious we shouldn't waste time/$$$ on legislation! I mean, aren't we broke!?

Maybe gun control isn't whats needed. Maybe there's a need for concerted effort on education. Maybe. Oh Hell, whats the use? If people don't want to be enlightened, they can't be enlightened. Try teaching a monkey not to play with itself. You;ll probably have greater success. The American people are a lost cause.

    Good for him.
Sounds like a common sense ad.
Personally fed up of the irrationality and spurious argument made by gun advocates against all the legislation discussed.
Full background checks and mental health restrictrions and for me Assault weapons restrictions and the ten shot magazine restriction all needed, plus import bans on any foreign weaponry and also ecport bans
Improved licensing and ability to track criminals with guns.
    Regards,
    Hodgson.

    1. Universal background checks (UBC) can not be effective without registration per DOJ, & registration in most countries led to confiscation, so UBC does lead to confiscation.
    2. Has anyone seen the number of charges brought against the members of MAIG? A lot of these mayors can't legally own firearms due to convictions.

This current series of irrational high profile attacks on the 2nd Amendment is more and more obviously a
massive exercise in misdirection. If all political and media energy is focused on the emotional aspects of gun related crime, in an attempt to make gun owners the next minority group that it is socially acceptable to discriminate against, the 16 trillion dollar debt gorilla in the room can be conveniently ignored.

Also, note how associated mental illness issues are studiously downplayed. Even though they account for most of the recent tragedies, they muddy the argument, and must be marginalized.

Is it any wonder that politicians, and the compliant media that feeds on them, are universally despised by any who are paying attention?
