Jim Carrey mocks Charlton Heston

(CNN) – Charlton Heston's declaration that gun control advocates would have to pry his firearms "from my cold, dead hands" provides the punch line for comedian Jim Carrey's new video mocking the late actor and NRA president.

Carrey, who appears on a spoof version of the old comedy show "Hee Haw" both as Heston and as the frontman of a country-western band "Lonesome Earl And The Clutterbusters," is a vocal proponent of stricter gun control laws.

"Charlton Heston movies are no longer in demand, and his immortal soul may lay forever in the sand. The angels wouldn't take him up to heaven like he planned, because they couldn't pry the gun from his cold dead hand," Carrey sings in the video, which was posted Monday on the comedy website Funny or Die.

Heston, who died in 2008, rose to fame as an actor in movies like "The Ten Commandments" and "Ben-Hur." Later in life, however, he turned his attention to political advocacy, eventually becoming the president of the National Rifle Association from 1998-2003.

He famously used the line mocked in Carrey's video during a 2000 speech to NRA members, going specifically after then-Vice President Al Gore, who was running for president at the time.

"As we set out this year to defeat the divisive forces that would take freedom away, I want to say those fighting words for everyone within the sound of my voice to hear and to heed, and especially for you, Mr. Gore: 'From my cold, dead hands!" Heston declared.

Carrey starred in movies like "Ace Ventura Pet Detective" and "The Mask." He actively argues his case for gun control on Twitter @JimCarrey.

Carrey said in a statement that he found America's rash of gun violence "frustrating" and the video was "my fun little way of expressing that frustration."

Oh, so what your saying is we should cower in fear as we wait for the cops to arrive, just because we don't have the means to protect ourselves? And the whole point of owning guns is so that the people of the united states can stand up to their government if they get out of hand. And by the way, if a criminal knows that the people around him are armed, he wont commit the crime. Gun Control just makes things worse.

i used to like jim carrey, but this is not funny. it is in very bad taste to talk like that about someone who was in the same club (acting) and who is now dead. everyone is entitled to an opinion, but it should be verbalized in a more gentle and generous way.

Really, "CNN political unit"? You're going to give Charlton Heston "Ben Hur" and "The Ten Commandments" and give Jim Carrey "Ace Ventura" and "The Mask"? Seems like someone didn't like Mr. Carey's joke....

Jim Carrey is a barley a mediocre comedian.
Jim's career is not dead due to the fact that it never really started.

I think we'd have better luck with redoing all the John Wayne movies with Paul Rubens as the main character then we would at Jim being funny.

    Just saying....

Thank you Jim. Charlton Heston may have been a decent actor, but I didn't like any part he ever played, not even the brief cameo in Tombstone. Jim Carrey, I may now actually watch Ace Ventura. I loved all your other movies, but I read the script for Mr. Poppers Penguins before you made the movie when I worked for a manager in LA. Dude, what did you need to buy? All your other movies and your taste in women rock, better than conservatively hidden Sandler. God his movies just keep getting worse. Go Jim go. Right on.

Renee, you didn't mind wielding a gun in Cold Mountain. Hollywood markets violence because Hollywood knows it sells. Our kids are bombarded nearly on a dlaily basis with violent programs on t.v., video games, where people are blown up etc., how can you Renee criticize anyone who buys a gun or guns to protect hearth or home. Do you have gates around your many homes? Do you have private security, dogs, alarms? Some middle class just ask for the right to the same protection that you have. Can you explain why it's different for you? My child wants me home everyday for supper too.

Several things come to mind. First, we need to have a better system in place to prevent dangerously mentally ill from being able to access weapons. Someone out there knows who the Jarred Laughners of the country are. What stops that from taking place? ACLU lawsuits and political correctness. I have carried a gun almost my entire life. I have killed nobody despite having served in the United States Army for a 20 year career. Another point is that the majority of these massacres occurred in gun FREE zones. Now we have foreigners like Carrey and Morgan (who should be returned as defective to Britain) telling us we should disarm and make the United States a gun free zone. Then we become sheeple. You should study history, every nation that allowed mass killings of citizens first had their guns taken away.

The reason you have a first amendment is because you also have a second amendment. Let the second amendment fall and the first amendment will follow it shortly by the same people who would destroy the second amendment. If you don't want a gun, don't own one. But you have no right to take away that right from your neighbor who is law abiding and not a threat to you.

OMG. ROFLMAO. It's hilarious. Although I bet the NRA isn't amused. They don't seem to have a sense of humor right now.

You're right Renee! I totally agree!! But we should also note the 1st and 5th amendment are completely unnecessary and obsolete as well. Actually, we should strike every amendment down as being pointless and unnecessary. The people certainly don't need or deserve any that might empower them against the government in which they live...

    Sheer brilliance...

Carrey is a one-trick pony, whose career is circling the drain... he's like Andrew Dice Clay, without the potty mouth.

As far as the statement that "Later in life, however, [Heston} turned his attention to political advocacy", where was CNN in August, 1963, when Heston marched on the Capitol for civil rights with the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.? Oh, that's right, you weren't born yet. Heston, on the other hand, was 40... hardly later in life.

Didn't watch the video, because honestly, when was last time anyone really cared what Jim Carrey said? I am just disappointed at how people post all kinds of things in support of gun control, and making fun of an icon that know nothing about the facts of the US.
Legally owned guns are used in less than five percent of gun crimes in US. Its a fact, check it out. The 2nd amendment is put in place to help the people to defend themselves against the government, not just other people. Do some real research, its a fact. Honestly, as a US citizen, you can't currently purchase the types of weapons you need to have to properly protect yourselves. The entire reason for creating this nation was for less governmental control. We are headed in exactly the opposite direction because people have been spoiled in this country for way too long.

Carrey became a U.S citizen about ten years ago.

And to the person who says that Americans badmouth Alberta; you are mistaken. I am an American I have no idea what you are talking about. Americans are too busy to be talking about Canada at all, much less badmouth them. I never hear anyone in the US talking about Canada at all.
