Jim Carrey mocks Charlton Heston

(CNN) – Charlton Heston's declaration that gun control advocates would have to pry his firearms "from my cold, dead hands" provides the punch line for comedian Jim Carrey's new video mocking the late actor and NRA president.

Carrey, who appears on a spoof version of the old comedy show "Hee Haw" both as Heston and as the frontman of a country-western band "Lonesome Earl And The Clutterbusters," is a vocal proponent of stricter gun control laws.

"Charlton Heston movies are no longer in demand, and his immortal soul may lay forever in the sand. The angels wouldn't take him up to heaven like he planned, because they couldn't pry the gun from his cold dead hand," Carrey sings in the video, which was posted Monday on the comedy website Funny or Die.

Heston, who died in 2008, rose to fame as an actor in movies like "The Ten Commandments" and "Ben-Hur." Later in life, however, he turned his attention to political advocacy, eventually becoming the president of the National Rifle Association from 1998-2003.

He famously used the line mocked in Carrey's video during a 2000 speech to NRA members, going specifically after then-Vice President Al Gore, who was running for president at the time.

"As we set out this year to defeat the divisive forces that would take freedom away, I want to say those fighting words for everyone within the sound of my voice to hear and to heed, and especially for you, Mr. Gore: 'From my cold, dead hands!" Heston declared.

Carrey starred in movies like "Ace Ventura Pet Detective" and "The Mask." He actively argues his case for gun control on Twitter @JimCarrey.

Carrey said in a statement that he found America's rash of gun violence "frustrating" and the video was "my fun little way of expressing that frustration."

I'm a gun owner and pro gun. That said a bunch of you posters are acting like a little kid with a skinned knee. Carrey has an opinion and he has a right to share it. He's also funny and talented and done a lot more than you interweb yahoos have.

Whether you agree with gun control or not - it was a pretty classless and unfunny joke.

wow, forget about the gun control thing, I can say I have never been a fan of Jim carrey, and most likely never will, humor seems a bit juvenile for me. right now his publicist, lawyer, agent and studio execs, have all gotta be going out of their minds, with as divided as everyone is on the subject and he is in a new movie that was just released, idiotic move, stupid move. I would be surprised if anyone would want to be in a movie, or have him in a movie for a very long time after this. emotion aside the name of the game for making a movie is to make money. if someone is gonna drive away potential customers, don't use him, and that is what this seems like to me. I have a feeling Mr. Carey is gonna find it hard to get roles after this.

What is the most common argument of gun advocates in America? They need guns to defend themselves and families against break ins and home invasion. However, first and foremost, the gun laws being sought after are not intended to prevent responsible reputable Americans from defending their homes, property and family. Secondly, while home or property owners are more at an advantage of protecting their property and defending themselves against a home invasion, most Americans including those in "gun states" are vertually defenseless when it comes to shooting in public places, like a school, theatre, temple, shopping mall as in Tucson and so on. I know gun advocates like to say if more American have guns, they'd be able to curtail shootings in public places. Well, does the shooter do like they did in the wild west and call you out before they start shooting or rather just start shooting when you're defenseless? Want a prime example? Recently a prosecutor was shot and killed by an assailant as he exited the courthouse in Texas and he was unable to defend himself with the revolver that he was carrying simply because the shooter didn't say, draw Matt Dillon.

Jim Carrey expressing his freedom of speech is unacceptable to some of you. Interesting, as you defend Heston's point about his freedom to bear arms.

"The government must dissarm the people before it confiscates wealth to keep the beast spending going. If people have guns, they will fight."

No they won't. Taxes could go up by 10% across the board tomorrow and you'd have angry protests and certainly a ton of bribery from wealthy people who throw their hands up and say "screw it, I'm just gonna bribe outright now"...but you won't find widespread organized violent resistence to a tax increase. You won't even see it if a assault weapon ban is enacted and gun buyback programs and turn-in programs are initiated (we didn't last time, so there's no reason to think it would happen this time). We voted for the people who would be enacting it, and we have regular elections that let us unvote for them. It matter how fervently, when it's not your side in control, you rock back and forth in a corner and tell yoruself repeatedly that "the apocalypse is nigh...everything's now ruined...oh the's time for revolution cuz my world is changing and I don't like it."

I thought Jim Carrey's career died ages ago, so now he's just a professional zombie digging up old corpses where he can find them to further the progress of his corpse shuffling along Sunset Boulevard. "I'm ready for my close up now, Mr. DeMille!"...

Jim must have a new movie coming out. His handlers are clearly telling him to be controversial to get headlines and our weak journalists are falling into step.

"Jim Carrey expressing his freedom of speech is unacceptable to some of you. Interesting, as you defend Heston's point about his freedom to bear arms."

The GOP/Teatroll faux outrage machine may indeed be the only perpetual motion self-fueling machine in the universe. Go down a couple articles and you'll no doubt see them all ranting for name...that CT Senators doing nothing more than publicly criticizing the NRA for their robocalling of Newtown victim's families and demanding, without force of law but simply because it's shameful, that they stop is "an attempt to silence the NRA and take away its right to free speech."

"how is it going? well in a week crime has dropped in half! "

LOL! That's a wonderfully credible longitudinal study you've got there....last week versus this week...yep, we should base all policies off that kind of robust analysis.

"what was the shootout over? you guessed it..GUN CONTROL LAWS!"

And they all lived happily ever after when the shootout was over? For real: any of you gun fetishists who think you'll have massive majority public support is you decide to use your guns to defend your guns, WE DARE YOU.

Not defending or condemning Heston but Jim Carrey is one to talk about no one watching his movies anymore. Charlton Heston's films will live in film history as some of the greatest ever made. Jim Carrey contributed farting and vomiting on camera and the juvenile elevation of raunchy humor with one-note forgettable characters, no range or depth, just stupidity for us all to "enjoy". Jim Carrey should just fade away the way his box office numbers have and leave comedy to people with actual talent instead of pulling stunts like a spoiled child trying to get attention back.
