Jim Carrey mocks Charlton Heston

(CNN) – Charlton Heston's declaration that gun control advocates would have to pry his firearms "from my cold, dead hands" provides the punch line for comedian Jim Carrey's new video mocking the late actor and NRA president.

Carrey, who appears on a spoof version of the old comedy show "Hee Haw" both as Heston and as the frontman of a country-western band "Lonesome Earl And The Clutterbusters," is a vocal proponent of stricter gun control laws.

"Charlton Heston movies are no longer in demand, and his immortal soul may lay forever in the sand. The angels wouldn't take him up to heaven like he planned, because they couldn't pry the gun from his cold dead hand," Carrey sings in the video, which was posted Monday on the comedy website Funny or Die.

Heston, who died in 2008, rose to fame as an actor in movies like "The Ten Commandments" and "Ben-Hur." Later in life, however, he turned his attention to political advocacy, eventually becoming the president of the National Rifle Association from 1998-2003.

He famously used the line mocked in Carrey's video during a 2000 speech to NRA members, going specifically after then-Vice President Al Gore, who was running for president at the time.

"As we set out this year to defeat the divisive forces that would take freedom away, I want to say those fighting words for everyone within the sound of my voice to hear and to heed, and especially for you, Mr. Gore: 'From my cold, dead hands!" Heston declared.

Carrey starred in movies like "Ace Ventura Pet Detective" and "The Mask." He actively argues his case for gun control on Twitter @JimCarrey.

Carrey said in a statement that he found America's rash of gun violence "frustrating" and the video was "my fun little way of expressing that frustration."

  2. Annoyed with Hollywood

I get so annoyed with these Hollywood actors/actresses thinking that they are the only ones allowed an opinion. They think so highly of themselves that they speak for the rest of the country. It is their way or you don't have a say or a thought of your own. It makes me sad, I am not a gun lover nor supporter. Guns don't kill people it is people who pull the trigger. I am also speaking from a child who mom was murdered with a gun at a young age. Also, speaking ill of the dead is just wrong. Maybe he is upset that he doesn't have the 1/4th talent that Heston had.

Well in my own little way I have to say people Like Jim Carrey will never see one dollar from me.

I'm saddened to see just how far CNN has fallen. The issue is CLEARLY not that Carrey mocked Heston as a person- this a comment on the gun control debate and it ought to be framed as such. It's either bias, sloppy, or sensationalist, whatever the cause may be, it's terribly poor journalism.

I used to like Jim and his humar,.."not so much after this". Charlton Heston was a fine actor and a serious voice in American rights and I feel his legacy will remain long after Jim Careys movies are dust. We suddent be listening to a comedian anyways..

I just lost a lot of respect for Jim Carry. The video is not funny and insulting to both gun owner and to the family of a great actor. Carry, who is famous for stupid characters wants to insult an actor who can not defend himself because he's DEAD, shows just how low he actually is.

If Jim Carrey wanted to go on the Piers Morgan tabloid show, why didn't he just ask, instead of making that ridiculous propaganda video mocking a great American and rural America..You can bet Morgan will be beating down the doors to get Carrey as a guest...this is right up Morgan's tabloid mentality.

Carrey did not mock Heston the actor – he mocked Heston the politician. Get your facts straight.

So, exactly who is Jim Carrey in comparison? A one trick pony actor who instead of actually engaging in one side of the debate or another, has chosen to simply mock someone who cannot defend themselves? What was wrong, was there no handicapped people for him to make fun of anymore? People to stereotype?

I used to think Heston was for real until his "from my cold dead hands" bs. So far the only ones who've adhered to that have been criminals of a sort or another.

No longer a fan of Jim Carey...why is a Canadian citizen mocking supporters of the 2nd amendment. Why is this idiot injecting himself into a matter in which he has no say....O yeah....a case of the "look at me ...look at me"syndrome. Seems a little unstable to me... He lives in a gated community...and undoubtedly has armed guards protecting him when he's out and about. What a sad little insignificant person.

A punch line using a punch line. The "star" of Ace Ventura making fun of the star of Ben Hur. A liberal insulting...well, anybody. JIm Carrey–too stupid to know he's stupid.

It’s about jealousy. Heston was a better entertainer that Carrey could ever dream of being.

More moral advice from Hollyweed. Can Jim Carrey explain how disarming law-abiding citizens makes those same citizens safer? What we really need is an up-to-date National Instant Check System that lists nut-cases like Jim Carrey to prevent them from buying firearms. In fact, he should not be allowed to reproduce.

I would call for a boycott of his movies, but thats pointless since nobody has been going to see his movies for years (take Burt Wonderstone for example). Jim Carrey is as funny as cancer.

How quickly we forget that Mr Heston was deeply involved in the Civil Rights movement he even participated in the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom where he can be seen standing behing Martin Luther King Jr.

The "star" of Dumb and Dumber and Ace Venture Pet Detective dissing Charlton Heston movies? Something tells me Ben Hur will remembered long after D&D an AVPD are long forgotten...you know, like last week. Isn't Carrey Canadian? He can always go back home if he doesn't like it here. He wouldnt' be missed.

Carrey is a bottom feeder or grave worm if you prefer. Ridiculing the opposition and ignoring their rights and concerns are not persuasive arguments

I find it laughable and ironic that all you 2nd Amendment lovers and Right Wing NUTS get all BUTT-HURT over a Actor performing a Political Satire song. As a American...and a Gun Owner I was far more offended by the NRA's reaction to Sandy Hook. 26 innocent people were slaughtered....NRA's first response...start a all out campaign of fear and misinformation about a Goverment Gun grab. They didn't even wait for the kids to be buried and give the parents time to mourn before they started their Propaganda War. Now...Jim Carrey performs a song that is clearly satire and you people are screaming for his head. You people are a joke......

To see so many gun-advocates worked up over social satire makes me giddy. Well done Jim, we need more people to emulate and understand the message about the general populace living in fear and subsequent gun ownership. This country has gone down the toilet partly because everybody wants to be armed to the teeth. It's insane. Here's an idea for gun regulation – people must have a certain IQ level to possess a firearm. Brilliant.

Jim is so full of it. So, why did you glamorize the violence and made money on it and now that you are old and no longer wanted, you come up with this. You could have still made this video but after stating that you have yourself been on the wrong track and that now you have been enlightened.
