Jim Carrey mocks Charlton Heston

(CNN) – Charlton Heston's declaration that gun control advocates would have to pry his firearms "from my cold, dead hands" provides the punch line for comedian Jim Carrey's new video mocking the late actor and NRA president.

Carrey, who appears on a spoof version of the old comedy show "Hee Haw" both as Heston and as the frontman of a country-western band "Lonesome Earl And The Clutterbusters," is a vocal proponent of stricter gun control laws.

"Charlton Heston movies are no longer in demand, and his immortal soul may lay forever in the sand. The angels wouldn't take him up to heaven like he planned, because they couldn't pry the gun from his cold dead hand," Carrey sings in the video, which was posted Monday on the comedy website Funny or Die.

Heston, who died in 2008, rose to fame as an actor in movies like "The Ten Commandments" and "Ben-Hur." Later in life, however, he turned his attention to political advocacy, eventually becoming the president of the National Rifle Association from 1998-2003.

He famously used the line mocked in Carrey's video during a 2000 speech to NRA members, going specifically after then-Vice President Al Gore, who was running for president at the time.

"As we set out this year to defeat the divisive forces that would take freedom away, I want to say those fighting words for everyone within the sound of my voice to hear and to heed, and especially for you, Mr. Gore: 'From my cold, dead hands!" Heston declared.

Carrey starred in movies like "Ace Ventura Pet Detective" and "The Mask." He actively argues his case for gun control on Twitter @JimCarrey.

Carrey said in a statement that he found America's rash of gun violence "frustrating" and the video was "my fun little way of expressing that frustration."

Heston was never even a great actor. ("Soylent Green is people!!!") He over-acted his parts just as did his social advocacy. He deserves mockery for his ridiculous defense of all weapons.

People who pay money to an organization to lobby for a right they already have is stupid. An organization that's supposed to be for an individuals right to own a weapon, should not be pimping those members to the gun makers!

Carrey, the phenomenally tasteless actor with no talent and nothing to leave for posterity, must build himself up by tearing down those greater than himself, which includes almost anybody. What a dope. More gun control? How about more drunk driving control. More innocent people die every year in crashes with drunk drivers, but where is the huge national outcry of this outrage? Besides which, nearly 3,000 people died in 9/11 and there wasn't a single gun involved, just boxcutters, and now its okay to carry them onto planes. That way, everybody can feel safe knowing that at least there are no guns.

  6. Liberals Make me Laugh

We already know what Hollywood Actors stance on gun control is. The majority of Hollywood is a bunch of liberals.

Look at that socialist state and how broke it is and yet they come crying to the Federal Government for more money to help them.. The state is way over priced in its cost of living and many other things. Their labor laws are a bit outrageous. Don't think so? Look into it.

Bottom line is, you are never going to get every gun off the street. A Criminal is going to find a way to get a gun no matter what. You're argument has to be something other than the fact that it's easy for criminals to get firearms. In reality, there are so many firearms in the United States that it would take many years to collect them all. People wouldn't turn over all their firearms even if the Government said to do so. Look what happened when they made it illegal for people to own gold in the 50's.. You think people gave up all that? Yah right, only stupid people turned it in. What's going to be a major deterrent to gun violence is having responsible armed citizens. Crime would be less if everyone knew everyone was carrying.

@ reckless abandon – I am not "denouncing" anyone – I did not condemn or accuse Mr. Carrey of anything, and as a matter of fact I don't think that Mr. Eastwood did the Republican party any favors at the convention. I don't appreciate ANY person trying to make a point by denigrating someone else. Tell me why I should agree with you, not how stupid or ignorant(or selfish or crooked) the other side is.
Mr. Heston has a legacy of patriotism and great classic movies – Mr. Carrey has a legacy of making fun of those he disagrees with and several mindless comedies that will more than likely be forgotten in 20 years.

If you don't like the rules take your ball and go home. If you think you would feel safer with the government having all the guns, then move to North Korea or some other communist country where you have no rights other than to serve the government. I'll take my chances here. The exits work just like the entrance. Feel free to use them at any time.

Good for Jim Carrey!! The NRA is nothing but a Dinosaur organization supporting outdated ideals of a time gone passed. There is no attack on gun ownership. The NRA only exists to support the Gun Manufacturers lobbies and the ridiculous idea that somehow the first amendment gives us the right to own any kind of weapon.

By getting all of you pro-gun nuts all fired up, Jim Carrey achieved exactly what he wanted – to get people thinking about this issue. But instead of giving it real thought, all you idiots can do is blow more hot air and venom towards him. Take that same energy and turn it into constructive and critical thought about this issue instead of just reacting from the gut.

I suppose the dinosaurs put up some sort of fight when they were heading to extinction too.

Why do all these Hollywood idiots think anyone cares one iota about what THEY think or believe? You are an "actor"–not even a real job. Get over yourself. No one cares about what you think on gun control or anything else. Shut up!

You need a license to drive a car. What exactly is wrong in the need for a license to have a gun?

Jim Carrey, what a looser, attacking a dead American that can't even defend himself. I bet dollars to donuts that he has an armed body guard. Jim has no qualms holding a gun and shooting people in movies to make a buck, what a hypocrite...

Jim Carrey mocks everyone, so who cares? The only people who comment here are jealous people who want to take rights away from others while supporting certain peoples rights to marry each other; because it's the right thing to do; get real and wake up! Guns protect your freedoms, you numbskulls! Even if you're too scared to use them! No guns and freedom will be gone!

@richard miller – whew dude, your anger is palpable and frankly rather scary. Might want to ask yourself why a comedican doing a short satire video is getting under your skin to such a huge degree. I hope you aren't anywhere around me when your head finally explodes.
