(CNN) – Charlton Heston's declaration that gun control advocates would have to pry his firearms "from my cold, dead hands" provides the punch line for comedian Jim Carrey's new video mocking the late actor and NRA president.
Carrey, who appears on a spoof version of the old comedy show "Hee Haw" both as Heston and as the frontman of a country-western band "Lonesome Earl And The Clutterbusters," is a vocal proponent of stricter gun control laws.
"Charlton Heston movies are no longer in demand, and his immortal soul may lay forever in the sand. The angels wouldn't take him up to heaven like he planned, because they couldn't pry the gun from his cold dead hand," Carrey sings in the video, which was posted Monday on the comedy website Funny or Die.
Heston, who died in 2008, rose to fame as an actor in movies like "The Ten Commandments" and "Ben-Hur." Later in life, however, he turned his attention to political advocacy, eventually becoming the president of the National Rifle Association from 1998-2003.
He famously used the line mocked in Carrey's video during a 2000 speech to NRA members, going specifically after then-Vice President Al Gore, who was running for president at the time.
"As we set out this year to defeat the divisive forces that would take freedom away, I want to say those fighting words for everyone within the sound of my voice to hear and to heed, and especially for you, Mr. Gore: 'From my cold, dead hands!" Heston declared.
Carrey starred in movies like "Ace Ventura Pet Detective" and "The Mask." He actively argues his case for gun control on Twitter @JimCarrey.
Carrey said in a statement that he found America's rash of gun violence "frustrating" and the video was "my fun little way of expressing that frustration."
HAHA thats some funny stuff. If you don't think its funny, then you are part of the problem.
And what a fine example Jim is with regard to children, abandoning his autistic son and all.
@KS – doesn't your comment apply to Heston too? Or does it only work one way, when you don't agree?
One actor with a dead career commenting on another actor who is dead...
Carrey's portrayal of gun advocates is not much different than what most of the world already thinks, except maybe for Somalia.
When Heston checked out, he should have left directions to have his body impaled on an assault rifle.
Mostly Jim Carrey's humor is meh. But that was kind of funny.
Just another sad irrelevant individual grasping at straws trying to remain in the spotlight. I would venture to say most people do not take him seriously anymore.
Mr Carrey should devote his time to his relationships and leave the thinking to the professionals.
Hats off to Jim Carrey, expressing real and honest frustration, with America's inability to do the right thing in regard to gun control. Take the guns off the streets, and save countless lives. There is a connection to the number of guns, and ease of access to guns to the number of senseless deaths from firearms massacres. Will it take another civil war, for the Americans to finally do the right thing. Ban Assault rifles.
He needs to go back to being funny instead of laying those steaming piles like this and Burt Wonderstone.
paulm5545 that was the perfect comment. Well Done!
"One actor with a dead career commenting on another actor who is dead..." an instant classic...
Thanks for your input Jim. Now please go do something you're good at; like making funny movies.
Something you won't see on Wolfe Blitzer today is the video of Mark Kelly (mr. Gabby Gifford) letting his pit bull off it's least on a crowded beach in Calif. and standing by while the dog attacks and kills a seal pup. Mr. Giffords only reacts to pull the dog off when he notices that someone is filming his dog kill a "protected" animal and he fear it might damage his holier than thou image. He quickly grabs the dog from the dead pup, then blames the whole thing on his 18 year old daughter ("not my dog, it's her's"). CNN won't run the video but you can watch it on youtube. He can run (and he does) but he can't hide. Anyone who owns a vicious dog and allows it to run free is a menace to society.
If Carrey is considered a skillful actor you are the problem.... Hows your Autistic child doing you abandoned..... P.O.S.
ZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzz... Jim who?
As I recall, Heston wasn't buried with a gun in his "cold, dead hands" so I guess they got his gun...
Carrey is a mentally defective loser now. He used to be funny, but has faded into a sad shell of his former self.
Meh...Heston was just another angry old white guy w/ a gun..i.e. a typical Republican.
Jim Carrey's career is OVER, so he grasps at straws to stay in the news. Thought it was rather tasteless. Also, for those of you talking about him abandoning his autistic son... that was his then love's (Jenny McCarthy) kid, not his.
If a conservative actor and done a similar skit for a dead liberal the tone of this article and comments would be far more angry over him daring to show such disrespect to the dead actor.
Comedians mock Hitler as well ... fair game.
Funny or Die? Well it wasn't funny so hopefully Jim will live up to his commitment.
Suggesting someone who has passed not going to heaven because of guns. I guess all the soldiers that protect your ungrateful as$es can keep him company wherever he is. Not funny, cheap shot by an attention seeker whose carrier is over.
