Jim Carrey mocks Charlton Heston

(CNN) – Charlton Heston's declaration that gun control advocates would have to pry his firearms "from my cold, dead hands" provides the punch line for comedian Jim Carrey's new video mocking the late actor and NRA president.

Carrey, who appears on a spoof version of the old comedy show "Hee Haw" both as Heston and as the frontman of a country-western band "Lonesome Earl And The Clutterbusters," is a vocal proponent of stricter gun control laws.

"Charlton Heston movies are no longer in demand, and his immortal soul may lay forever in the sand. The angels wouldn't take him up to heaven like he planned, because they couldn't pry the gun from his cold dead hand," Carrey sings in the video, which was posted Monday on the comedy website Funny or Die.

Heston, who died in 2008, rose to fame as an actor in movies like "The Ten Commandments" and "Ben-Hur." Later in life, however, he turned his attention to political advocacy, eventually becoming the president of the National Rifle Association from 1998-2003.

He famously used the line mocked in Carrey's video during a 2000 speech to NRA members, going specifically after then-Vice President Al Gore, who was running for president at the time.

"As we set out this year to defeat the divisive forces that would take freedom away, I want to say those fighting words for everyone within the sound of my voice to hear and to heed, and especially for you, Mr. Gore: 'From my cold, dead hands!" Heston declared.

Carrey starred in movies like "Ace Ventura Pet Detective" and "The Mask." He actively argues his case for gun control on Twitter @JimCarrey.

Carrey said in a statement that he found America's rash of gun violence "frustrating" and the video was "my fun little way of expressing that frustration."

Good grief! You gun advocates sure don't have a sense of humor. But then neither did Charlton Heston.

Carey need to get real. The sole blame for Newtown lies with the mother who allowed her insane child to have access to the firearms that she owned. She even trained him how to use them. Guns/gun laws/ the NRA/responsible gun owners are not to blame for Newtown – no one but her!!

.Jim Carry is no longer liked by me. I don't own a gun I just like Carlton Heston and think making fun of someone posthumously is in very poor taste...what a jerk.

I have spent my whole life around guns 60 years worth I have 3 older siblings and 2 younger they also have been around guns their whole lives and guess what not one of us has killed anyone. Why don't you get the true facts instead of relying on lies that make you feel good....

Give em 'ell, Jim! These gun lovers are gonna figure out that times change and we no longer live in the Wild-Wild West or fear the Red Coats. The Second Amendment has long outserved its usefulness

The Wild West? Try defending yourself after a hurricane and the looters start at your house! We don't all have doormen, security guards and live on the 20th floor. Some of use have to protect our families ourselves.

The second amendment along with the constitution were written to give citizens the power to stand up to a corrupt government should some crazy dictator take over (please don't make obama comments here... I'm a fan, other than his gun control stance) and anyone who has ever lived under a real dictator would be offended by statements that our current administration is such. Or to stand up to an invasion. We have a right to bear arms. A right to defend ourselves against enemies, foreign or domestic. Its not so much about shooting an intruder, or killing your straying husband, etc. Citizens should have weapons because if there was an invasion... or a crazy dictator, we should not have to wait for the military to show up and help, or a foreign ally to save the day. People think it will never happen, well... historically it has happened to every country at some point or another.

Why do you think the drafters of the Bill of Rights made this to be the 2nd amendment, right after the 1st amendment?
They must have believed it to be a fundamental addition to the constitution.

If carry had wanted to make a point about gun violence, why not target Chicago street gangs or insane individuals like Lanza. If he wanted to comment on the political power of the NRA, he could have appeared as Harry Reid. Instead this courageous voice for gun control attacks a dead man with a string of vile comments and innuendos. As for his inability to understand American gun culture, a simple solution is to return to Canada. As for the exaggerated stats about gun safety, I have owned multiple weapons since turning 18. In those nearly 30 years, I have not shot myself or any member of my family. I have shot a lot of animal, some for safety reasons and some because they taste good (my funny little comment). Guns are only as dangerous as the person holding them, just like cars, knives, and fertilizer.

This is so totally in bad taste. Charlton Heston is a legend and deserves respect and admiration. It is obvious that Carrey has sold his soul to Satan just for fame and money. He seems to truly live up to his "YES MAN" image. What a shame that he has no compassion for all the rape, robbery and murder victims that wish they had some way to have protected themselves. But I guess he will never know what it's like to be afraid, since he is probably surrounded by armed bodyguards and all types of protection. And we wonder why this society is so messed up. Looks like "Leave it to Beaver" has got up and left.

Funny how Jim is willing to trash the 2nd amendment but stands behind the 1st amendment to say something as stupid as his video. Would it be ok if we banned movies (starting with Jim's) or selectively banned certain books? I don't hear Jim say anything about movies such as Django that killed people throughout the whole movie that just might give deranged people the ideas that it is ok to shoot and kill. I apologize if I misspelled any words, it was the keyboard's fault and not mine.

How big of him to mock a dead man that had ten times his talent. Everyone wants to take the easy way out on this and no one wants to actually fix the problem. inner city gun violence is the product of Gangs, drugs, and allowing kids to drop out in 8th grade no questions asked. Does anyone want to fix that? No, it is easier to just blame guns and do nothing to the core problems. Suicides are the result of a broken mental health system and a stigma against those that seek help. Does anyone want to fix this? No, it scores bigger headlines and more political points to ban guns. School shooters are tormented by bullies that are allowed to ostracize and be as cruel as they want with no fear of consequences and their victims have no one that will take a second of time to ask if they are ok or if there is anything that they can do to help them to be successful and to feel good about themselves. Does anyone want to try to fix this no they want the easy bandaid of gun control. Maybe if we taught our children to show compassion, taught them to feel good about themselves and took time to stop everyone of them and take time to take an interest in their life and to let them tell us what is going on. Maybe if we cared enough to find out how they feel and to let them know they have worth and that they never need to feel bad about how who they are. No we don't have time to actually save a life not when there are headlines to be grabbed or when there are special interests to pander to. how about we start solving the problem and stop focusing on everything except the problem. Maybe Jim could actually make the world better rather than being a clown mocking an actor.

pathetic all you cowards supporting the abolishment of the 2nd amendment.
Apparently you all have been living under a rock and dont witness the tyrannical government we are letting structure itself. We have let private banks and institutions take over our nations and issuance of currency. Take a look through history. any nation that has been deprived of self defense later falls to economical failure. yes guns should be controlled. but they should never be banned. Take away all the semi-automatics to leave only the automatics in the hands of military power? Dont be so silly to think that power could never be turned on you. The fact that USA has never been invaded is 100% due to the fact that the American public is the biggest sleeping army.

Lets back that up with the facts like the highest crime rates in USA are where guns have been banned or controlled. Lowest crime rates are where there are less control. in support of that Switzerland issues a firearm to every legal aged male, structuring its citizens as its army. Has one of the lowest crime rates in the world! To think we wont progress towards socialism or tyranny once the guns are grabbed is complete idiocy. So much of the public gets their facts from garbage like jersey shore, or popular "comedians", actors, uneducated mimes paid by big business to push bigger subliminal messages. Go grab the guns! the criminals will still have them, still access them, and still intend to use them. Then when you or your family is on the frontline of those consequences you will wish you had something other than a phone call to a police officer. Remember folks, police officers dont prevent crime. They respond to it.
