Jim Carrey mocks Charlton Heston

(CNN) – Charlton Heston's declaration that gun control advocates would have to pry his firearms "from my cold, dead hands" provides the punch line for comedian Jim Carrey's new video mocking the late actor and NRA president.

Carrey, who appears on a spoof version of the old comedy show "Hee Haw" both as Heston and as the frontman of a country-western band "Lonesome Earl And The Clutterbusters," is a vocal proponent of stricter gun control laws.

"Charlton Heston movies are no longer in demand, and his immortal soul may lay forever in the sand. The angels wouldn't take him up to heaven like he planned, because they couldn't pry the gun from his cold dead hand," Carrey sings in the video, which was posted Monday on the comedy website Funny or Die.

Heston, who died in 2008, rose to fame as an actor in movies like "The Ten Commandments" and "Ben-Hur." Later in life, however, he turned his attention to political advocacy, eventually becoming the president of the National Rifle Association from 1998-2003.

He famously used the line mocked in Carrey's video during a 2000 speech to NRA members, going specifically after then-Vice President Al Gore, who was running for president at the time.

"As we set out this year to defeat the divisive forces that would take freedom away, I want to say those fighting words for everyone within the sound of my voice to hear and to heed, and especially for you, Mr. Gore: 'From my cold, dead hands!" Heston declared.

Carrey starred in movies like "Ace Ventura Pet Detective" and "The Mask." He actively argues his case for gun control on Twitter @JimCarrey.

Carrey said in a statement that he found America's rash of gun violence "frustrating" and the video was "my fun little way of expressing that frustration."

Miss Zellweger, what kind of personal protection do you have and might think that Mr Carrey have?

Gee Renee, which other amendments aren't useful? The First for all actors would be fine with me. They can't seem to put any logic together anyway. They star in movies glorifying guns and violence of all types. Maybe THEY are the reason for the violence in this country.

I've owned guns for over 40 years, and have managed to not ever pull it on anyone (friend or foe), or shoot myself or a loved one. Nor did my child take it to school, and we managed to miss going on a post office or retail store rampage.

I can't say I found the Carrey piece funny, but then I never liked "Dumb and Dumber" or "Me, Myself and Irene". Perhaps I just fail to find Carrey consistently amusing. Frankly, the "Tea Party" is more amusing..you know one of them is always going to say something really idiotic...accidentally, but no less amusing.

When guns are outlawed only outlaws will have guns. When people want to kill they will find a way. Guns do not kill people. People kill people. The only way to stop a bad man with a gun, is a good man/woman with a gun. Mr. Heston was a good decent God fearing Man and a Patriot. In hollywood that is hard to find.

Gee, I liked Mr. Heston. Hollywood liked Mr. Heston. And America liked Mr. Heston. Heck, America liked Mr. Carrey when he applied for American citizenship. I don't think Mr. Heston ever hurt a fly. In any event, Ace was funny. And Canadiian Jim is friends with Mr. Eastwood (Pink Caddy). Mr. Eastwood was a great friend of Mr. Heston's. Hope it works out. The one common denoninator of the socialists, AKA liberals, democrats, progressives, is that they not only dismiss the second admendment of the constitution, they have absolutely no respect for constitution itself. They believe that whatever the majority wants should determine the law of the land. Please note: We are a nation of individual rights NOT group rights. We are a constitutional republic, NOT a democracy. If you want to live by mob rule there are plenty of nations in this world where you would be happier. The constitution ( including the second admendment) is the law of the land. Respect it!

Yeah, this is the same guy that was (with Jenny McCarthy) speaking of the evils of vaccines just a few years ago... Pardon if I take his opinions with a grain of salt.

Sir; Certainly you are entitled to your opinion, and to express it as you deem fit. However; I do find mocking a dead man, who cannot defend himself is in very poor taste. And is below your station, as a well known public figure. I do not believe that Mr. Heston would have conducted himself in a similar manner had the situation been reversed !!

I am sorry, but even Christ the Lord, through whose blood we are all set free, never said anything about not being about to defend ourselves when our home is being invaded by a government welfare moochie. And yet Obama wants all the guns taken away, so that we will have no way of protecting ourselves against the gangsta thugs who are destroying American. Lord, where are you when we need you most!

Oh no! Jim Carrey has an opinion so he better go back to Canada and be banished from the USA because you don't agree with his comments. WHAAAAAA!!!!! But in the same token, you can insult him personally, his acting abilities or lack thereof, and compare him to Heston and what a better actor he was. He's a comedian people!! Apples and Oranges. Also, he's as American as the rest of you. Sorry. 2004 he became an American so he can stay and have an opinion all he wants. Agree with it, don't agree with it. He still has a right to say it. As do you.

How about we focus on solving the real problem – BAD PEOPLE USING GUNS IN BAD WAYS!!!

Until the government can PROVE that not one gun will be obtained illegally, I will never be in favor of a gun ban. Guess what, will never happen! I am not a big gun advocate (only own 1 gun – family heirloom) but I want the freedom to buy a gun if i ever feel the need to protect myself or my family. I have lived all my life in rural areas where guns are owned and used by many residents. In those areas, rarely is anyone ever killed by a gun and almost always it was a purposeful act. I think the statistics skewed in favor of gun control are based on experiences living in major cities where guns are most likely bought for one reason – to shoot people – either in protection or aggression.

A gun ban will not solve the problem. Guns will always be available illegally. I fear the problem will become worse as criminals will be more emboldened as the fear of getting shot themselves is eliminated in a gun ban environment.

Please, let's first eliminate illegal guns then we can talk about a gun ban!!!

Poor Jim Carrey trying desperately to stay relevant by using the gun control issue. I guess that's all he's got to keep his face out there in light of the fact that no one bothers wasting their money on a ticket to see one of his lousy movies. Here's a tip Jim: When your YouTube hits are greater than your box office receipts it's time to face the fact that you're a has been with too much time on your hands, cold dead or not.

Attention my fellow Americans who have intelligence and common sense, we can not logically defend our Constitutional Rights with extremists for their arguments are rooted in emotion and have no regard for any intellectual debate. We can not point out when the right to bear arms was inserted in the Contitution the typical arms Americans had at the time were equal and in many cases superior to military issued guns. We can not point out more people are killed by cars then guns each year and we can not point out the ease in which people can buy cars. We can not point out that more people are attacked by knives then by guns. We can not point out that no responsible good person has ever went on a shooting spree. We can not point out the majority of mass killings happened in gun free zones. We can not point out mass killings are rare in areas known to have lots of legal guns. We can not point out America exists soley due to guns and our Forefathers wanted to protect everyone's right to have them. We can not point out the largest terror attacks in the country's history (World Trade Centers both times, Oklahoma City) killed more than any shooting spree and not a single gun was used in all 3 attacks.

Lastly we can not point out most anti-gun types want extensive background checks and registration but at the same time someone going to vote should not have to show any proof of ID. Both are Constitutional Rights, you can not demand massive scrutiny for someone to use one but nothing for the other. This is were the super angry uneducated will scream you can't kill anyone by voting. Well Hitler was elected, how many died due to that election? I believe the number is in the millions. Oh by the way, Hitler was a huge advocate for gun control and registration.

Think you have a cogent argument against background checks, banning assault weapons and high capacity magazines? Then you're probably a victim of Heston's NRA propaganda. If you're looking for irrefutable talking points on gun safety legislation, read the article by James O'Donoghue on the web page 'Salon'. Google it. Powerful.

Charlton Heston was a man who stood by his beliefs; to the point where he also marched in civil rights demonstrations back in the early 1960s. Carrey, your politically charged parady was in poor taste to say the least.

Since when did Charles Heston get a pass on being made fun of? I believe Carrey has imitated Heston in the past- what is the big deal? Carrey is a comedian and does first rate imitations. Why are people watching the video if it disturbs them so? Has everyone lost every shred of humor?

That really is amazing that Mr. Heston 's 50 plus years in the public eye is remembered only by his short stint as NRA president. this true class act of a gentleman and human being should not be forgotten for his many contributions and his incredible acting resume. This video has nothing t o do with sense of humor, just plain bad taste. This man has sadly passed away. Where is the humor in that?
