Jim Carrey mocks Charlton Heston

(CNN) – Charlton Heston's declaration that gun control advocates would have to pry his firearms "from my cold, dead hands" provides the punch line for comedian Jim Carrey's new video mocking the late actor and NRA president.

Carrey, who appears on a spoof version of the old comedy show "Hee Haw" both as Heston and as the frontman of a country-western band "Lonesome Earl And The Clutterbusters," is a vocal proponent of stricter gun control laws.

"Charlton Heston movies are no longer in demand, and his immortal soul may lay forever in the sand. The angels wouldn't take him up to heaven like he planned, because they couldn't pry the gun from his cold dead hand," Carrey sings in the video, which was posted Monday on the comedy website Funny or Die.

Heston, who died in 2008, rose to fame as an actor in movies like "The Ten Commandments" and "Ben-Hur." Later in life, however, he turned his attention to political advocacy, eventually becoming the president of the National Rifle Association from 1998-2003.

He famously used the line mocked in Carrey's video during a 2000 speech to NRA members, going specifically after then-Vice President Al Gore, who was running for president at the time.

"As we set out this year to defeat the divisive forces that would take freedom away, I want to say those fighting words for everyone within the sound of my voice to hear and to heed, and especially for you, Mr. Gore: 'From my cold, dead hands!" Heston declared.

Carrey starred in movies like "Ace Ventura Pet Detective" and "The Mask." He actively argues his case for gun control on Twitter @JimCarrey.

Carrey said in a statement that he found America's rash of gun violence "frustrating" and the video was "my fun little way of expressing that frustration."

Jim Carrey is spot on. The crazies feel the need to "protect" themselves from some imaginary bad guy who's going to invade them 24/7/365. The actual number of people who've been killed (THIRTY THOUSAND EVERY YEAR) by guns in this country far exceeds the number who've been saved by some boogie man breaking into your house. Why is it that the crazies in this country feel the need to "protect" themselves when almost EVERY other civilized country doesn't share that lunacy and they are safer than we are???

I got pretty tired of seeing Heston telling me what to think before he died, so I can't say he didn't ask for this over and over. But it's still not funny, Jim. Get rid of the yes-men.

Excellent Mr. Carrey! If those cowards in Washington, DC can’t be shamed into doing the right thing, maybe they can be ridiculed into doing it.

"Heston is a maggot, lowest common denominator" etc, no he was just spouting off about what he believed was true, same as any other opinionated old fart. I think he should have kept his mouth shut, but this is still pretty harsh.

    ----
You mean like Heston was "just another Hollywood celebrity that should" have kept his opinions to himself?

"Ben-Hur" vs. "Ace Ventura Pet Detective"

Not only is Carrey a truly lousy "actor," he's a jerk as well.

Carry speaks the truth! Good to see him get under the skin of the gun nuts.
Heston had a screw loose and LaPierre is worse.
Old Wayne dodged the draft by claiming he was too nervous to carry a gun. Sounds like a mental problem to me. Since LaPierre thinks "mental" people shouldn't have guns, does he have proof that he's ever been cured?

Truly sad, how many liberals attack Charlton Heston. Mostly because they're uneducated, ill-informed, ignorant individuals.

Charlton Heston, was one of the most prominent individuals to stand up for civil rights in American Hollywood history. He did so first, standing up for equality and encouraging his fellow members of Hollywood to join him and do the same. He later stood up for another civil right when he felt that was being threatened.

While one may or may not agree with the politics of the 2nd Amendment, guns, etc. That's fine. I'm not asking you to. But when you degrade a man who truly did more than you ever will for equality, civil rights, and liberty.

I think it comes to a point where you should really shut your trap before insulting the dude.

    Thank you very much....

I never liked the movies in which Charlton Heston stared. I didn't watch the entire movies 'The Ten Commandments' or 'Ben-Hur'. The reason was because he acted best as a hypocrite.

I used to like Jim Carrey too, after seeing this garbage he's getting tossed into the Janeane Garofolo category. You're there to make us laugh, not decide on what arms we should have to defend families.

Why do these foreigners come to America, then complain about our laws and freedoms? Jim Carey, you just lost my respect.

    "Shameful he mocks the dead."

Said by an NRA supporter while the NRA is busy getting reprimanded for robocall harassment of the Newtown community.

You can always tell the offended Reich-Wingers..."Jim Carey is useless, Jim Carrey is irrelevant, Jim Carey sucks, Jim Carey is an idot, he's this, he's that, waaaa, waaaa, waaaaa. I was a fan of Charlton Heston the actor, but Charlton Heston the NRA Whacko is another story. If it was someone mocking President Obama or any Democrat, the righties would be having a parade down their trailer park mainstreets, the whiney lil SS armband wearin' kids they are.

Carey can be funny but his body of work can not compare to Mr. Heston's.
Carey needs to stick a sock in it.

'GaryS – Just another Hollywood celebrity that should keep his opinions to himself.'

Talking about Heston now right? or was he allowed his opinion because it agreed with you?

He should have dressed up like Clint Eastwood and talked to an empty chair. Now that would be funny..... Wait, that's already been done.
