Jim Carrey mocks Charlton Heston

(CNN) – Charlton Heston's declaration that gun control advocates would have to pry his firearms "from my cold, dead hands" provides the punch line for comedian Jim Carrey's new video mocking the late actor and NRA president.

Carrey, who appears on a spoof version of the old comedy show "Hee Haw" both as Heston and as the frontman of a country-western band "Lonesome Earl And The Clutterbusters," is a vocal proponent of stricter gun control laws.

"Charlton Heston movies are no longer in demand, and his immortal soul may lay forever in the sand. The angels wouldn't take him up to heaven like he planned, because they couldn't pry the gun from his cold dead hand," Carrey sings in the video, which was posted Monday on the comedy website Funny or Die.

Heston, who died in 2008, rose to fame as an actor in movies like "The Ten Commandments" and "Ben-Hur." Later in life, however, he turned his attention to political advocacy, eventually becoming the president of the National Rifle Association from 1998-2003.

He famously used the line mocked in Carrey's video during a 2000 speech to NRA members, going specifically after then-Vice President Al Gore, who was running for president at the time.

"As we set out this year to defeat the divisive forces that would take freedom away, I want to say those fighting words for everyone within the sound of my voice to hear and to heed, and especially for you, Mr. Gore: 'From my cold, dead hands!" Heston declared.

Carrey starred in movies like "Ace Ventura Pet Detective" and "The Mask." He actively argues his case for gun control on Twitter @JimCarrey.

Carrey said in a statement that he found America's rash of gun violence "frustrating" and the video was "my fun little way of expressing that frustration."

HAHA...says the guy who was in love with Jennty McCarthy who disputed ALL of medical science regarding vaccines and autism. Guys facts and science, etc only works for liberals when they want it to. Gun Control has NEVER saved a single life. Funny how all these shootings tend to take place in bastions of gun control....schools, Connecticut, Colorado, etc. Hmmmm funny how that works.

    Jim Carrey,

The spoof is very funny. But, then again, shame on me for laughing, and shame on you for spoofing a socially and politically retarded person. We should not make fun of the intellectually handicapped.

Yet another actor who I will not support any longer. I will NOT watch another Jim Carrey or Ashley Judd movie ever again. Bruce Springsteen? How hard can I laugh?

Doesn't everyone think he's unstable? Doesn't everyone think he's another headline grabbing celebrity, one step up from Paris Hilton, but not as good looking. The sad part is media chooses to report on it as just another dig against non-liberals.

This is gun advocates position on gun control and background checks: Don't pass gun control laws and background checks cause you're violating the second amendment rights of Americans. Now this is gun advocates position on why they need to have guns: we need guns to defend ourselves against criminals who have guns. Duhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

I'm sure it doesn't matter to, Jim Carrey, but he just lost another fan. Like the rest of the Hollywierd folks he's following a path to no where. That's ok since his career has been in decline the past several years. When will these folks realize it's not the guns that need control, but the nut cases misusing them?

I'm sorry, I don't remember Carrey making fun of Heston when he was alive...oh, yeah, courage happens to cowards when their adversary is no longer around.

Jim Carrey was homeless living under a bridge.................. Now he has some money, and a roof over his head.......... He should go back to living under the bridge with no money................... In the old days they would decapitate the "Court Jestors" when they no longer provided amusement for the Kings's Court.

OK, so did Jimmy-boy fire his security team? The day these Hollywood elitists live like the rest of us is the day I'll listen to their political views. I'm sure Carey has security for himself and his family and that these guys are armed. So his opinion is very hypocritical. I don't like guns – don't have one and never will. But, like it or not, the Second Amendment says what it says. if you don't like it, then start a movement to amend the Constitution. But when Hollywood talks politics, I stop listening.

Charleston Heston was an actor. His flamboyant pro-gun statements were not to be take as the voice of the country.

Heston doesn't really need to be lampponed. He did a good enough job of it on his own.

    "Cold, dead hands" indeed.
