Pelosi: Republicans 'irresponsible' on same-sex marriage

(CNN) – Republicans who voted to spend millions in taxpayer dollars defending the federal ban on same-sex marriage are "irresponsible," the House Democratic leader Rep. Nancy Pelosi argued Wednesday.

Speaking to reporters after attending oral arguments at the Supreme Court on the legality of the Defense of Marriage Act, Pelosi said the decision by GOP leaders in the House to pay to defend DOMA in court was a violation of lawmakers' oaths to uphold the Constitution.

"The behavior of Republicans in the House of Representatives on this subject has been so irresponsible," Pelosi said, equating the defense of DOMA in court to defending "increasing discrimination in our society."

"It's just plain wrong," she said.

The Bipartisan Legal Advisory Group, or BLAG, took up the defense of DOMA after President Barack Obama instructed his Justice Department to stop enforcing the law. Pelosi said the two Democratic members of the panel – herself and Minority Whip Steny Hoyer – both voted against defending the law in court.

Originally capped at $500,000, the cost of defending DOMA has risen to $3,000,000, a figure which Pelosi said Wednesday "speaks very loudly" to Republicans' priorities.

The man paid to defend DOMA at the Supreme Court, Paul Clement, has a "stale role to play in life," Pelosi added.

After hearing oral arguments, the minority leader predicted DOMA would be overturned

"On the basis of what I heard, the questions of the justices, the response of the participants, I'm very optimistic that DOMA will be struck down," Pelosi said.

    Taxes are something that is under the control of the Legislature, unless the tax is discriminatory, like a poll tax.
    ===============

    Taxes applied to only one segment of our population are by definition discriminatory, especially while almost half pay none. Where is the "equal protection under the law"? The pay-nothings-do-nothings of our country elect Democrats to take from others and give to them. The workers of this country and their paychecks are now at the mercy of the takers.
    ********************
    Lose your job and your house, and that will be you. The real takers in this country were identified by Chris Christie not long ago: states that expect the Feds to keep sending them money, states like, say, SC, AK....the list goes on and on. Quit demanding I pay for the tax cuts that a red state uses to gut the economy where I live, and then keeps providing substandard services that will destroy this country's future. The lack of understanding of how our government operates that you demonstrated tells me that you don't give a damn about this country. Typical rightie, climbing a mountain to punch an echo.

    "So I guess the federal government should just stop enforcing the laws on the books just because some far left lunatic like Pelosi thinks it shouldn't be enforced. "

    Actually, that's precisely what comments from Chief Justice Roberts and Justice Soprano suggested Obama should have done. They both took the opportunity today to take a potshot at Obama and claim that if Obama believed DOMA to be unconstitutional, he should have stopped enforcing it BEFORE waiting for the SCOTUS to determine whether his interpretation was correct. They couldn't have taken that potshot if refusing to enforce it was what Obama actually did, so you look somewhat foolish claiming that's the case.
