Polls suggest Congress might have waited too long on gun control

Washington (CNN) – Is the clock ticking on gun control?

While support for many gun control policies remains high in the wake of the horrific shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut, polls conducted over the past few weeks suggest that three-and-a-half months after the tragedy, public backing for major new gun laws overall appears to have dropped significantly.

Disgusting that the few can thwart the will of the many. And that it can be done so easily, over & over again, using the same disgusting playbook of spreading FEAR.

Glad to see common sense has prevailed! New gun laws will only further restrict the rights of law abiding citizens. The existing gun laws we have in place now do not deter criminals from commiting crimes, so what makes all these liberal minded, socialist leaning politicians think that new laws are going to deter tragic events from happening? THEY WON'T!! Criminals will continue to ignore any and all laws. Why? Becuase they are criminals!!! THEY DO NOT CARE ABOUT ANY LAWS!!

At the very least universal background checks should sail through the Congress – if these bunch of lame ass politicians wake up to the will of the American public. It is disgraceful that even restrictions on magazine clips are being questioned, but let's start with all of us supporting universal background checks. You 535 members of Congress were elected to represent the American people – do your jobs!!!!

The only thing that is going to change their minds is one of their babies bullet riddled bodies on a slab just like the children from Newtown. As you can see, republicans are against anything that doesn't affect their families.

    That's a shame.
They also did a poll in one of the newspapers in our area a few weeks ago, something like 85% of the people polled stated they were in favor of gun control legislation BUT only if Obama's name is NOT on it! Real talk!

Maybe he got tired of taking blood money from people who profit from human misery. Ask yourself why the 2nd Amendment is sacrosanct and has no limitations on it, unlike every other Amendment. Do you think you can answer in something other than broken, home-schooled English?

Gay marriage to gun control. It's about the slippery slopes that these changes in law could create. Think further than today – that's what intelligence is about. And moving forward? Sounds like you bought into empty and dangerous rhetoric.

Sad to see that paranoid delusions have prevailed so that terrorists, criminals, and the mentally insane can obtain as many guns and boxes of ammo that they desire.

The NRA position is insane. Let's suppose you have field of crops and 40% of your fence is broken, which allows dear to come in and eat your crops. Not good. Most people would fix the broken fence. The NRA rationale says counteract the animals feeding on your crops with bigger animals that can scare the smaller ones away, like bears, and the fence fixes itself.

Thanks, NRA, for supporting your members and helping defeat (I hope) this useless legislation. Keep up the good work.

the real lesson from Newtown and all the others is that mainstreaming is dangerous. Mentally ill people need to be in controlled environments ,not "mainstreamed" into society to get by as best they can

A Democratic Congress and Senate in 2014 is the only thing that will bring the changes needed. No one wants to repeal the 2nd Amendment but reasonable, sane people do not object to preventing known criminals with outstanding warrants from purchasing guns. Straw gun sales should be illegal. There can only be one reason for them and that's to arm someone who plans to use the gun to commit a crime. Requiring lost or stolen guns to be reported does not infringe on anyone's right to own a gun. People, VOTE!

Wow, what a bunch of cry baby liberals on this comment section. Look at NY, they knee-jerked and rushed a junk gun control bill through, thank you Bloomberg & George Soros, and now the Cuomo is distancing himself from those clowns. My wholehearted and true belief is that the liberals are courting the criminals because all of the junk they have put forth does nothing to the criminals and only hurts the law-abiding gun owners. I have never bought a gun without a background check. I went throught the CCW class and had a background check. Everytime I buy a gun I have a background check. I am law-abiding. Criminals don't mess with background checks. Universal background checks are junk. They will do nothing to prevent gun crime. But we know that because the liberals are supporting the criminals.
