Furlough means I can't pay my student loan

Washington (CNNMoney) – Upcoming furloughs mean a 20% pay cut for thousands of federal workers - and some tough budgeting choices. For many, student loan payments will be the first to go.

Laurie Vroman has already made her decision. She has three young children and makes $41,000 a year as a management assistant at an Army arsenal near Albany, N.Y.

There is truly a dysfunctional federal system, if they can furlough workers, while still hiring new federal workers. Too the Federal Government spending cuts is but a joke to them, they can put a freeze on hiring as other companies do to maintain what they have. Common sense is a gift not own by or used by the Federal Government.

College degree, working for those wages is appauling, it costs too much to raise a family, she can barely afford to live, yet she tries, kudos, the diference between working household and one with government assistance should be more recognizable

Making ends meet is tough enough without sudden and unprecedent drops in your income. You have to start making draconian cuts: student loans; child support; long term savings; car payments; home mortgage; health care; food.

Are these the same Federal Workers that haven't paid their Federal Taxes?? People get laid off all the time. You just have to budget for it. Another memo is called being conservative. Or spending wisely.

  6. Government - belt - tightening

It is long overdue for the US government to tighten it's belt.

Like in the private sector, cost cutting decisions have consequences

Families in the private sector has been impacted for years of the government 's over extending itself.

Taxpayers have paid the price. We need a break.

Government can no longer borrow from China to hire more government workers.

This sequestor was a foolish thing. The idea of cutting like this should never have been on the table. Both sides need to take some level of blame in this problem. The idea should not be cutting spending. The government has to be the spender now because there is no one in the private sector doing enough to get things moving that creats jobs. Besides there are projects that need to be done now (roads, basic R&D, etc).

Another memo, it's called denial. The number of federal workers nearly doubled during the Bush years. It ballooned government spending, but it also kept unemployment low....which helped very much in masking the fact that 8 million manufacturing jobs premanently left the country over the same time frame.

How in the world do you BUDGET for a layoff??? Do you think you will receive prior notice?? Most people do budget their paychecks, but with wages being basically stagnant and everything else going up, how is that possible?

So when your boss comes in your office one day and says due to the economy they are going to have to let you go but if things pick up you can come back. Then they inform you that your insurance stops as of 5pm that day. How does one budget for such a thing?
