Massive turnover changing face of Senate

Washington (CNN) - With South Dakota Democrat Tim Johnson's announcement this week that he will not seek re-election this year, the recent string of Senate retirements has the political class debating whether Republicans have a real shot at taking control of the upper chamber.

But this biennial parlor game overlooks a stunning dynamic that has been developing on Capitol Hill over the past decade: massive turnover.

Obama makes new gun law push as polls show waning support

Washington (CNN) – With polls showing support for new gun legislation on the wane, President Barack Obama joined police officials and victims of gun violence Thursday to raise pressure on Congress to get something passed more than three months after the Newtown school massacre.

The president called on Congress to pass a package of gun laws coming up in the Senate, saying "none of these ideas should be controversial.

Full-court press: McConnell hit in DSCC's first 2014 ad

(CNN) – Not wasting any time, the group tasked with getting Democrats elected to the Senate is already on the offensive against the most powerful Republican in the upper chamber.

The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee released its first political ad of the cycle Thursday, targeting Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell as he faces re-election in November 2014.

Washington (CNNMoney) – Upcoming furloughs mean a 20% pay cut for thousands of federal workers - and some tough budgeting choices. For many, student loan payments will be the first to go.

Laurie Vroman has already made her decision. She has three young children and makes $41,000 a year as a management assistant at an Army arsenal near Albany, N.Y.

Second date: Obama, Republicans to dine again

(CNN) – President Barack Obama's congressional courtship continues as he's set to dine with a new group of Senate Republicans next month.

A spokeswoman for Sen. Johnny Isakson, R-Georgia, said the president approached their office about a week ago and asked them to put together a list of 12 Republican senators.

Source: Long-serving Boston mayor Menino won't seek re-election

(CNN) – Mayor Thomas Menino, the longest-serving mayor in Boston history, will not seek re-election to a sixth term, a Boston City Hall source said.

Menino, 70, is expected to make the announcement Thursday afternoon at a 4 p.m. news conference with his family at his side.

Newtown families featured in first political ad

(CNN) – Mayors Against Illegal Guns, the group co-chaired by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, released on Thursday the first television ad buy featuring family members of victims in the Newtown, Connecticut massacre.

In the spots–one is 60 seconds, the other is 90 seconds–family members talk about their loved ones and call on political leaders to embrace tougher gun laws. The ads come more than three months after a gunman killed 20 children and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School, in addition to his mother, before taking his own life.

(CNN) – U.S. President Barack Obama had a clear message in interviews with two of America's largest Spanish-language broadcast television networks on Wednesday: Immigration reform is coming soon.

A group of lawmakers are close to working out the details of their proposal, Obama said.

CNN: U.S. says it sent B-2 stealth bombers over South Korea

The United States said Thursday it sent stealth bombers to South Korea to participate in annual military exercises amid spiking tensions with North Korea. The B-2 Spirit bombers flew more than 6,500 miles from Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri to South Korea, dropping inert munitions there as part of the exercises, before returning to the U.S. mainland, the U.S Forces in Korea said in a statement.

CNN: Nelson Mandela back in hospital with lung infection

Former South African President Nelson Mandela was admitted to hospital after a recurrence of a lung infection, the South African president's office said Thursday. The Nobel laureate was admitted to hospital on Wednesday night.
