Carrey calls conservative media critics 'bullies'

(CNN) - Jim Carrey's video mocking the late actor and National Rifle Association President Charlton Heston didn't please some conservatives - not that Carrey himself minds.

The video, a spoof version of the old comedy show "Hee Haw," featured Carrey playing both Heston and the leader of a country-western group, mocking Heston's declaration that gun control advocates would have to pry his firearms "from my cold, dead hands"

Conservative pundits claimed Carrey was inappropriately denigrating Heston, who died in 2008. Taking particular aim at, presumably, Fox News - the spelling below is his - Carrey responded to the critics Friday.

"In my opinion Fux News is a last resort for kinda-sorta-almost-journalists whose options have been severely limited by their extreme and intolerant views; a media colostomy bag that has begun to burst at the seams and should be emptied before it becomes a public health issue," Carrey wrote in a statement.

"I sincerely believe that in time, good people will lose patience with the petty and poisonous behavior of these bullies and Fux News will be remembered as nothing more than a giant culture fart that no amount of Garlique could cure," he continued.

Heston, who died in 2008, rose to fame as an actor in movies like "The Ten Commandments" and "Ben-Hur." Later in life, however, he turned his attention to political advocacy, eventually becoming the president of the National Rifle Association from 1998-2003.

Carrey starred in movies like "Ace Ventura Pet Detective" and "The Mask." He actively argues his case for gun control on Twitter @JimCarrey.

A spokeswoman for Fox News did not respond to a request for comment.

The problem with the NRA is that they will not entertain any reasonable gun control issues. The president has never said that he would like to take anyone's gun or hunting rifle away and I dare anyone to show proof of this. Reasonable people are saying that hunters and sportsmen don't need semi automatic rifles with large ammo clips. Reasonable people including most NRA members believe in universal back ground checks.

Carrey is sometimes a good comedian, but he is always a self centered narcisist looking for attention or trying to improve his next paycheck. I doubt he cares about 2nd Amendment protections, he depends on his armed guards and secure living areas. The unacceptable thing of course is making fun of someone who has died. If he wants he can try making fun of or debating Bill O'Reilly, pretty sure that would be a mismatched battle. Why not make fun of Obama's broken promises, well that would be bad for business. He's just a cheap opportunist.

Mr. Carrey...funny movies, but stay out of politics. The damage you did in the field of autism with your unqualified opinions about vaccines helped to set back the search for answers. Stick to acting, not talking about things you know nothing about. Leave science to the scientists, and keep on making everyone laugh.

typical conservative leaning backlash-Senator Mitch McConell would be proud. Your right to a gun is trumped by my rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

Who cares what any actor says. Just like who cares what the diminishing far right has to say. As the young and educated and world aware youth come into voting age the repubublican party will be doomed anyways.

This guy must not have cable or no one told him about MSNBC. CNN often host Progrssive guests that are pretty brutal with their opinions. Fox doesn't have the the sole claim to the "bully" hosts or guests.

Carey is a cowardly man to make fun of Heston. Heston was one of the first in Hollywood to support the civil rights movement. Carey needs to apologize and pick on someone alive .... that is able to defend themselves.

What does owning a gun have to do with being conservative or being a republican ? I am a liberal democrat, own a number of firearms and belong to the NRA as do many of my liberal friends. It really frustrates me that people label you if you own a gun or go to church and automatically assume your political affiliation. Instead of blaming guns, why don't we start blaming people ? How about reinstating the death penalty ? We fund it easier as a society to blame an object instead of a person and sadly this naive state of mind will ultimately be our downfall.

There's always 20 to 30% of population that can't think for themselves or fear free thinkers, (Fox News viewers) and I think most of them are commenting here because they can't afford a therapist. Go Jim, you're 100% correct on your comment of Fux news.

    @citizen

I don't think Carrey is saying anything about freedom of speech. What he IS saying is that if you present yourself as a "news reporting service" you should probably make an effort to see that the "news" you report is reasonably accurate, even if you want to slant it politically. Making up things, choosing to not report significant stories because they don't show your viewpoint in a good light, and disgusting discussions where the presenters openly bash others they don't agree with is a bit more than freedom of speech. Yes, they're allowed to say almost whatever they wish. However, they're also allowed to enjoy the results of that speech, and if they don't like Carrey calling them on it then perhaps they shouldn't be calling him on what he says.

I thought it was hilarious and on the mark. Not sure about Sam Elliot interlude, but even that was funny. Gutman at FN is such a tool; too bad Carrey gave those clowns the time of day.
