Carrey calls conservative media critics 'bullies'

(CNN) - Jim Carrey's video mocking the late actor and National Rifle Association President Charlton Heston didn't please some conservatives - not that Carrey himself minds.

The video, a spoof version of the old comedy show "Hee Haw," featured Carrey playing both Heston and the leader of a country-western group, mocking Heston's declaration that gun control advocates would have to pry his firearms "from my cold, dead hands"

Conservative pundits claimed Carrey was inappropriately denigrating Heston, who died in 2008. Taking particular aim at, presumably, Fox News - the spelling below is his - Carrey responded to the critics Friday.

"In my opinion Fux News is a last resort for kinda-sorta-almost-journalists whose options have been severely limited by their extreme and intolerant views; a media colostomy bag that has begun to burst at the seams and should be emptied before it becomes a public health issue," Carrey wrote in a statement.

"I sincerely believe that in time, good people will lose patience with the petty and poisonous behavior of these bullies and Fux News will be remembered as nothing more than a giant culture fart that no amount of Garlique could cure," he continued.

Heston, who died in 2008, rose to fame as an actor in movies like "The Ten Commandments" and "Ben-Hur." Later in life, however, he turned his attention to political advocacy, eventually becoming the president of the National Rifle Association from 1998-2003.

Carrey starred in movies like "Ace Ventura Pet Detective" and "The Mask." He actively argues his case for gun control on Twitter @JimCarrey.

A spokeswoman for Fox News did not respond to a request for comment.

Many will see this as "dividing". But what about is it dividing? People's support for Carrey and his message or those who condemn his message? The division was already there; events like this simple expose them.

I have very little to add to Mr. Carey's statements.

This guy is a has been; hasn't had a hit movie in years. He's now in the news again. Another elitist idiot.

Carrey has obviously started to drift into the crazy zone. I guess that was predictable though.

Apparently Jim Carrey's career is in far worse shape than is already readily obvious. The parody was dumb. His reaction to criticism is dumber. He's now jumping the big shark in a big way.

Sad when comedians make more sense than the Very Serious People. Perfect analogy for Fux ("media colostomy bag bursting at the seams"). Thanks for the courage to speak out Mr. Carey, you are completely right.

Funny – he says Charlton Heston's movies are no longer in demand, but that same day I saw that Ben Hur and The Ten Commandments were on TV. Didn't see any of Carrey's movies . . . I don't think Carrey is funny, so this parody fell completely flat, IMO. I don't think he should have made fun of Heston, or anyone else for that matter. Notice he didn't take on Ted Nugent or Chuck Norris. BTW – I didn't know Fox News was slamming Carrey, but he deserves to be slammed for putting out yet another lousy product. There are better ways to promote your cause.

He thought people were laughing at him because he's a "comedian" not a fool. When you shout insults at people don't complain when they shout them back at you.

Jim Carey is a classless, dark and angry has-been. His career is free-falling and his attempt to garner attention to himself by insulting a movie icon and rural Americans is offensive and predictable. Can't his publicist come up with something better than blaming vaccines as the cause of autism and Charlton Heston for crazy people and criminals acquiring guns? I only hope the media will let this pathetic story die soon.

Did they hurt the poor baby's feelings. Ah, those mean conservatives. What did he expect when he started attention whoring and tried to smear a dead man? Guess he can't handle a confrontation with a living person.

carrey's not pulling any punches. i like that. comedy is comedy. and until people learn to "get over" themselves and laugh a little, this nation will continue to give birth to ideological zealots like fux news and the narrow-minded religious right whom hold this nation hostage, who prevent this country from being a truly great and free society the world will envy.

His approach may be a little over the top, but so was Heston and the NRA. He is absolutely right about FOX. The use if the word "news" in the same phrase is an oxymoron. They are a right-wing propaganda organization with very little reporting of facts on anything.

You can have Jim Carrey's armed private security guards guns in his Beverly Hills private gated community, when you pry it from their cold, dead, hands, as he cowers behind them in fear screaming "SAVE ME", like a little girl.

You can always count on liberals to take the high road like this. Carrey, remember when you could be funny without having to resort to doo-doo jokes? Me neither.

I noticed CNN forgot to mention that Heston was one of the FEW white, Hollywood actors, that went to the South to march with minorities for civil rights. Carrey; that's "marching with them", not blogging or putting a video on the internet you coward.

Jim Carrey, Charlton Heston was a truly decent person. He marched with Dr Martin Luther King Jr before it was cool and got others to do the same.

Bullies. Thank you, Mr. Carrey, for being precisely correct. With rare exception, I believe that gun owners also are both bullies and cowards.

I used to like Carrey. It is now obvious that he has become that what he loathes, a self absorbed egotistic ass.
