Obama to announce $100 million for brain research

(CNN) – President Obama on Tuesday will unveil a $100 million initiative to research the human brain, in hopes of unlocking further understanding of brain disorders.

The initiative, dubbed Brain Research Through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies, or BRAIN, "aims to help researchers find new ways to treat, cure, and even prevent brain disorders, such as Alzheimer's disease, epilepsy, and traumatic brain injury," the White House said.

I'm all for this initiative. We have the perfect guinea pigs to work on: Republicans.

The right wing is going to have field day demagoguing the vaiety of exotic research performed at the cutting edge. They always have. Too many on the right don't believe in science, much less able to understand it. How patterns found n nature, mathematics, and physics seem to repreat themselves across all fields of science. So when they ridicule millions spent on someone to disect frogs, in order to understand how amphibians regenerate limbs and nerves but they won't tell you that part, don't say I didn't warn you.

Speaking of....we already have a wonderful brain surgeon on the scene – he has integrity, brilliance, and patriotism – Dr. Ben Carson.

I have to say, Brain Research is fine, But we really need to help the poor and the hunger problems we have. I'm a supporter of the POTUS but this is NOT something I support at all. We still have too, too many people homeless and way to many people out of work. Spending Millions & Billions on Brain is fine but NOT rith now at all.

Good move Mr.President. I hope the Neurosurgeon (Ben Carson) will not be included in the research. We may end up in a work done ZERO! What he has been talking so far doesn't impress anyone to throw 100 million dollars in such a research while him being inclusive.

He's welcome to apply for a research grant. If he wants to be a politician, I view that as a sign that he's either not a good surgeon or he's tired of it. Neither of which serve as impressive bona fides to be a politician in a state wide elected office, much less POTUS. Y'all sang the same types of songs about Mr. "9-9-9". "He's a successful businessman."

Sorry, but no amount of research (of any kind) is going help us find out what's wrong with the GOP.

We know what's wrong with the GOP. But, no amount of research is going help them figure it out. Some things are learned only through experience, and the 'Grand Old Tea Party' will still be crossing the burning sands for quite some time yet.

Ray, I bet you still think Bush was a good president. The aroma around Washington still stinks thanks to Bush and Cheney!

    RUSTY KRUS,
Rudy NYC asks what is wrong with the GOP. The answer it they expect you to get off your can and make your own way. I know you think Work is a dirty word. At least with Bush unemployment was about 4.5 percent. Where are we today ??

"Oh yeah..........no money for WH tours, but give away millions for a new program, that has absolutely NO ACCOUNTABILITY, whatsoever!"

Grow up. The money is appropriated and allocated to particular agencies and departments and Obama can't just yank it out of one and put it in another. Congress has that authority, not him.

    ----------------------
The Congress decides how much money goes to what program, not the POTUS. The folks overseeing the research programs decide how much to give to whom. It is not uncommon to have to give a speech behind closed doors to a Congressional sub-committee as you make your research proposal.

So, you are correct. Pres. Obama has no direct accountability on how the money gets spent. He can ask, but the House sub-committee will make the final decision. Currently, all of them are run by the majority party, the Republicans.

    -----------------
George W. Bush had low unemployment because he was busy nearly doubling the number of federal workers. It hid the fact that manufacturing jobs were leaving in droves rather well, I should say.
