Most individual health insurance isn't good enough for Obamacare

New York (CNNMoney) – If you buy your own health insurance now, you'll be in for a big change when you sign up for coverage in 2014.

Just over half of the individual plans currently on the market do not meet the standards to be sold next year, when many key provisions of President Obama's Affordable Care Act kick in, according to a University of Chicago study. That's because the law sets new minimums for the basic coverage every individual health care plan must provide.

Yah explain to me how you pay upwards of over $1000 a month for your typical health care plan and still have a $5000 deductible..My friend who's in perfect health, runs miles a day at 62 and is paying till he retires over $1250 a month for indivigual health care, isn't that robbery or what..Have these reps in Washington try with their health problems like high blood pressure or diabetes and they'll see how much they'd pay if they get anyone to cover them at all and this is from a cancer survivor who had to retire because my health insurance was terminated because of the cancer and I had to fight SocialSecurity to get disability rights to get medicare..Try that one suffering for years after surviving cancer and getting treated by insurance companies like a leper not getting anyone to even talk to you if you say that word " Cancer"..Try it sometime and you'll see I'm not bluffing America ,insurance companies are heartless and they should be treated that way as well!!

If there were non-profit health insurance companies out there and doctors had less to pay into medical malpractice insureance, there might be hope for less costly insurance.

One of the big problems is Mal Practice Insurance doctors pay or can't practice in some instances. The Trial Lawyers faught Caps on insurance so Medical Bills are thru the Roof in many places. The jury isn't in yet for Obmam Care but the bet is that Obama Care will keep Medical Bills thru the Roof when it is fully implented.

When Insurance Companies have to compete for your business rates are lower. But the Liars and Movers have sold you a bill of goods. Obama Care is a complete boondoogle but it may be some time before it comes to light.

If it is not good–go for GOVERNMENT INSURANCE. It is exchanges to set up by states if not fed take over. Better than insurance robbery.

Im a republican, and proud of it. I do not like the way Obama, put this healthcare together. but i have to admit something had to be done. i grew tierd of watching people work hard and save, invest money their whole life only to have a heart attack or stroke, cancer what have you,and get wiped out. its just hard to look at. and when this happens it dont matter your political party, your old and broke. but if you were rich then you would be fine. is that what America is about.

Ask the insurance companies. They have to maintain their margins so that they can sustain their 6 and 7 figure bonuses. Something as fundamental as health care should not be the high profit margin business that it has become.

most of the comments made here reflect the idiot mentality of the far right. These are the same people that will be up in arms when their insurance doesn't cover what they expected. For a country as great as America to have people that can not get coverage is a sin. We should all be working to ensure everyone has the right of good medical coverage. Use the tired ol line that is is socialism like Europe. Who cares as long as we have coverage. All your politician's do.

I currently pay 368/month at 61 for a 10,000 deductible plan and three primary care doctor visits per year. It does have prescription med coverage as long as there is a generic formula. Brand names are fully paid by the insured.

I would gladly pay that or a bit more for coverage with a lower deductible and co-pays that I enjoyed when covered by a group under my former employer. I paid COBRA of 580/mo for good coverage, but that ended after 18 months.

Hopefully, the new AHCA will have a premium price for individual coverage, somewhere between these two amounts.

    Well Lottie,
You may not believe this, but the country has been doing things YOUR WAY for tha last 75 Plus Years. So I have to ask lottie, what happened? Why are things worse than they were in the 1930's ?? There is no Free Lunch, lottie. You pay somewhere. Many businesses who were being screwed by Government finally moved Offshore. Everybody thinks Big Business has unlimited funds. If that were true Leman Brothers would still have the 600 Billion Dollars they once had but lost when people that bought houses that couldn't afford went into forclosture. Morgages are still being forclosed on. And it is the people that caused it. Look closely lottie. you will see the enemy. and it is you.

Health insurance costs as much as it does so that executives can grant themselves ridiculous salaries. Too many top executives get paid way too much. For example, the CEO at troubled J.C. Penny just took a 97% cut in annual salary. This year his salary will be a meager $1.5 million.

  14. The REAL TRUTH...

Well Ray, the fact is that the country has been doing things YOUR WAY for the last 60 of those 75 years you hold so dear. We were doing mostly OK, until the GOP decide it would be a good thing to use surplus SS funds to "balance" the budget.. we can thank Ronnie for that gem of an idea. Meanwhile, taxes have continued to be lowered – even tho Ronnie raised them 8 times and Bush "read my lips" 41 was forced to do the same. Supply side trickle down fiscal policy has been an utter disaster for the 98%, culminating in 8 years of rip-off by Bush 43 and his cronies. We inherited this mess and as Lottie stated the idiot mentality of the far right wants to blame the current POTUs who – despite all the chest beating and Obstructionism from the GOP – has DECREASED the budget deficit by some 38% (over Bush 43's last one of $1.47T) and DECREASED the rate of increase of Nat'l Debt. . If you look closely Ray, YOU will see the enemy.. it's in your mirror, direct from Fux news.

@Ray E, doctors in most states like Pennsylvania have medical waivers from malpractice insurance. And look at the waiting room walls in most doctors offices any more because by law they're supposed to show they've signed just such a waiver to tell their patients if they don't agree and they have any idea about suing such a doctor don't bother ..Malpractice like personal health insurance is getting out of control because of the increase in lawsuits by shady lawyers who only sue to reap the rewards at others expense..Cut back on malpractice lawyers, suits and you'll curb most of your problems with rising costs and pay doctors like in Canada to keep people well not benefit when they're ill like here...Just check how most of your social health care is handled in countries like Canada,China and France getting doctors to keep visits to all time lows because their plans on preventive health care that actually gets doctors bonuses from these countries governments, check it out and you'll see how these countries have been so sucessful in your socalled socialized healthcare...And its been sucessful for years so don't knock it!!

I worked for an insurer which fired hundreds of workers and sent jobs to India. A year ago the 58 year old CEO was fired after being arrested for trespass and assault on the husband of the 28 year old employee he was having an affair with. Google it – Melani and Melissa. The sad thing is that he sued and got an undisclosed golden parachute settlement. Typical CEO special treatment BS. Just think of how many people could have been covered by the salary and settlement he received for chasing the Pink around all day when he was supposed to be working.
