Congresswoman's gun magazine #fail

(CNN) - Initially Rep. Diana DeGette was against large gun magazines because they "put the 'mass' in 'mass shooting'" but now the Colorado Democrat has warmed to them. If enough people use them, she said, eventually the supply will run out.

Her comments sparked mockery from conservatives.

"Rep. Diana DeGette appears not to understand how guns work," responded the National Rifle Association.

"Is she really that ignorant, or does she think WE are?" asked a poster on the conservative website Free Republic.

And the site Colorado Peak Politics wrote, "No, Diana, gun magazines are not expendable. You can reload them. It's a modern marvel of technology!"

They were referring to her comments at a gun violence forum in Denver on Tuesday, when she said, "These are ammunition, they are bullets, so the people who have those now, they're going to shoot them, so if you ban them in the future, the number of these high capacity magazines is going to decrease dramatically over time because the bullets will have been shot and there won't be any more available."

While the gunman responsible for recent mass shootings carried multiple magazines, it's not because the devices are meant to be discarded but because it is faster to swap one magazine for another than to reload them on the spot.

Magazines are easily exchangeable and reloadable ammunition containers which have a feeding device. An older form of magazines, gun clips hold ammunition together and were often reused.

Her spokeswoman told The Denver Post she "simply misspoke in referring to 'magazines' when she should have referred to 'clips.'"

DeGette introduced a bill banning large gun magazines in January, and wrote in a press release at the time, "These devices are used to kill as many people as possible in the shortest amount of time possible and we owe it to innocent Americans everywhere to keep them out of the hands of dangerous people

"We don't even allow hunters to use them – something's deeply wrong if we're protecting game more than we're protecting innocent human beings," she wrote, though she provided no evidence to her claim that hunters were barred from using large magazines.

Her comments this week circulated on conservative websites including Breitbart and Revealing Politics which was credited by some for initially flagging the comments. The site wrote she "exposes the complete lack of understanding of the very thing she is trying to legislate."

Conservative talk show host Chris Plante tweeted, "Dianna DeGette is Chris' favorite moron of the day today. She thinks gun magazines can only be used once."

"Stunningly stupid," was Colorado Republican state Sen. Greg Brophy's response to the remark, according to The Daily Caller.

"I would think that if you're going to sponsor a bill regulating [firearms], you'd at least want to know how they worked," he said.

The governor of Colorado signed several gun restrictions last month, including a 15-round limit for gun magazines that takes effect July 1. Connecticut is implementing a similar measure that sets the limit at 10 rounds and New York also implemented gun restrictions this year.

A call to DeGette office for comment was not immediately returned on Thursday.

Don't put all of the blame on her, she is typical of the gun control movement.

I think everyone should just get chipped with the latest GPS technology so that our Government will know everything about us, and where we are at all times. Crime would be virtually wiped of the face of this planet.

Additionally, it would help the Drones that are currently flying over the US to locate and keep tabs on each and every one of us dynamically.

    Problem solved!

As I have said before the people that are suppose to be the experts for the Democrats don't have a clue of what they are talking about.

I am surprised CCN ran this since the Democrats are their own.

The typical democrat, spouting off poor solutions to things she does not even remotely understand......I am both amazed and alarmed at the breadth and depth of the parties collective ignorance.

She must have went to the same school as Hank Johnson, the democrat who thought Guam would tip over and capsize if we stationed an additional 8000 marines on the island.

This is an embarrassment to our entire establishment. She didn't 'misspeak', she clearly has no idea what she is lobbying against. No, we don't protect wildlife more so than humans – there are laws in place to prohibit using small/medium/large magazines against humans as well.

She's a self righteous idiot. She and others like her want to decide specifically which guns or gun accessories are allowed to be owned by law abiding citizens, criminals will not be affected, when they do not know what the very things they want to specify as illegal do. Lemmings...

Both "clips" and"magazines" are reusable so are "bandoleers" so r "shells" "brass" or any other components of a firearm type the 2nd ammendment is not about hunting. Hunting with a firearm is a perk that comes from the 2nd ammendment

Yes, what she said was stupid, yes it is scary that our Representatives are so clueless about the Bills they are voting for, in Washington, but in no way should anyone attribute this to a Democratic problem...Do any of you Right Wingers remember Sarah or Michelle or the dingbat from Maryland's routine gotch moments so quickly? Just like having Creationists on the Science and Technology Committee (a Republican, obviously) proves these people aren't working for us, they are working for big business and the rich. All of the nonsense about religion, abortion, and any other social issue, is just smoke to mask the rich and bug business raiding our Treasury...

This is representative of most who support more stringent gun control. Completely ignorant on the subject yet eager to pose as some form of authority.

As a sponsor of the bill on gun control it seems evident that detailed knowledge is required yet she fails to even have the most basic information. I guess sheep will swallow the load of horse crap she is spewing....and they will like it too!

Nearly as embarassing as the "legitimate rape" comment from Akin or any of the other countless examples of idiocy in our elected officials. I vote democrat, but this is embarassing. And no, changing it to "clips" wouldn't have made any more sense (much less in fact).

    Pathetic.

Quote from Nancy Pelosi – "We have to pass the bill so we can what is in it."

DeGette is no more clueless than the politicians who voted for Obamacare.
