Memphis music created ‘harmony with harmony,’ Obama says

(CNN) – The new sound out of Memphis in the 1960s and 70s wasn’t just catchy, President Barack Obama said Tuesday. Soul music was a way to unite people through common human emotions – love, heartbreak and tenderness.

Speaking at a White House celebration of the genre, Obama said those common themes made Memphis soul almost universally popular.

Senate Democratic leaders optimistic on gun legislation

Washington (CNN) - Senate Democratic leaders are increasingly optimistic they will get enough Republican votes Thursday to overcome a GOP-led filibuster against beginning debate on gun legislation.

With confidence the hurdle can be cleared, Democrats are planning for another two full weeks or longer of debate on the measure before completing action, a Democratic leadership aide told CNN.

Dem wins Chicago area district vote

(CNN) - Democratic nominee Robin Kelly won a special election Tuesday to fill the congressional seat left vacant by disgraced former Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr., CNN projected.

A former Illinois state representative, Kelly was considered the overwhelming favorite in the district, which includes parts of Chicago's Southside. It's one of the most Democratic in the nation.

(CNN) – Republican leaders in Congress received a dire warning on Tuesday from former Vice President Dick Cheney on the ongoing crisis in North Korea.

“We’re in deep doo doo,” Cheney told lawmakers, according to a GOP leadership aide.

Treasury says Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s trip was approved

(CNN) - Beyoncé and Jay-Z's recent controversial trip to Cuba was approved by the Treasury Department in advance of their travel, new documents show.

According to a letter obtained by CNN Tuesday, the Treasury Department wrote to two members of Congress who called for an investigation of the trip and explained the type of travel license obtained by the superstar couple.

Coburn: There won’t be a filibuster

(CNN) – A key player in negotiations over potential gun control legislation said on Tuesday a planned GOP filibuster of the bill won’t occur if Democrats allow Republicans to bring amendments up for a vote.

Sen. Tom Coburn, speaking on CNN’s “Erin Burnett Outfront,” said a filibuster that’s been promised by more than a dozen fellow Republicans would prevent Americans from seeing where their elected officials stand on the issue.

High school visit added to first lady’s Chicago trip

(CNN) – First lady Michelle Obama’s trip to Chicago on Wednesday will include a stop at a public high school where the city’s rash of gun violence has been acutely felt.

She’ll stop at Harper High School, where 29 students, past and present, have been shot in the past year, according to the White House. Eight of those students died.

(CNN) - It could have been a crucial piece of opposition research: The South Carolina Democratic Party accused Mark Sanford, who criticized his rival for taking union contributions, of receiving campaign cash from labor groups himself during a past run for Congress.

Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley signs law raising requirements for abortion clinics

(CNN) - Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley signed a law Tuesday that drastically raises the safety requirements for abortion clinics to operate - a measure that he says "has been endorsed by pro-life groups across America."

"As a physician, and as a governor, I am proud to sign this legislation," Bentley, a Republican, said in a statement. "This bill provides appropriate standards of care."
