Washington (CNN) - It looks like the effects of the forced spending cuts are starting to kick in with Americans, according to a new national poll.
And a CNN/ORC International survey released Tuesday also indicates that the cuts, known inside the Beltway as the sequester, appear to be mostly affecting lower-income Americans.
According to the survey, more than two-thirds of Americans say that the cuts have greatly or somewhat affected the nation's economy and more than four in ten say that the cuts had greatly or somewhat affected them personally. Both of those numbers are up by seven to eight percentage points since a mid-March poll taken two weeks after the forced spending cuts took effect.
"More than half of Americans who make less than $50,000 a year say that the forced spending cuts have affected their personal finances, compared to only about a third of those with higher incomes," says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. "Rural Americans are also more likely to report that those cuts have affected them personally than people who live in cities and suburbs."
INTERACTIVE: Measuring the impact of spending cuts
The $85 billion in cuts for the rest of fiscal year 2013, which ends September 30, were mandated by a 2011 agreement by Congress that raised the federal debt ceiling. In an attempt to motivate legislators to compromise on a deficit-reduction plan, the agreement required $1.2 trillion in across-the-board spending cuts over a decade if Congress failed to strike a deal to shrink the deficit by that amount. The cuts targeted agencies and programs dear to Democrats, such as education, and also went after Republican priorities, including the military.
The CNN poll was conducted by ORC International, from April 5-7, with 1,012 adults nationwide questioned by telephone. The survey's overall sampling error is plus or minus three percentage points.

It affects you because they say so. I'd like to see them ask specifically how they are being affected.
AND Who's Idea was it in the first place...you got it...not the GOP but the person who is currently setting in the White House BHO...that's right BHO.....and yet the try to Spin it Off on the GOP what a bunch of phonies and hypocrits.
The Republican mantra that zero debt is a must is something even Ryan 2 budget does not achieve, will everyone please remember that despite severe austerity austerity measues it takes 10 years to balance the budget. Meanwhile back in reality land those 9+ years of budget deficits add to the debt!!
The Ryan 2 plan has very little chance of increasing GDP and reducing unemployment.
The Obama plan will due to some small stimulus for infrastructure and education funding and alternative energy investment.
Cut the ideokolgy both sides and get down to Budget that helps the nation as a whole. please use Bowles simpson as a base to compromise from the current House and Senate and Obama Budget ideas.
Mallory Archer...are you out of your Gourd? OBAMA has NOT reduced the Debt, OMG he has drastically Increased it over the past 4 1/2 years...how do you think it got to around $17.0 TRILLION....U can thank BHO for that big BUMP...not the GOP...get your math straight my friend.
How about a story where we feel the effect of unchecked spending. Look at the inflation on food, fuel and raw materials for manufacturing. I think any intelligent person can admit there will be some pain in making cuts. Hopefully they can also admit that the present path of spending is unsustainable.........and tax increases don't even come close to addressing the problem.
well all this sure doesn't do anything to create jobs for the millions of unemployed in this country. obama and the democrats sure have become the masters of distraction and diversion. turn up that smoke machine democrats. meanwhile we have the fewest people working in this country in decades.
Coming home from a cruise recently, there was a 'delays are due to sequester.blah.blah' sign up as we disembarked. Not 5 feet away was a customs worker whose job was to ask people if they needed help with using the elevator which was 10 feet further away. Another 10 feet and you encountered another customs worker who's job was to tell you that both escalators were working and that you could choose to use either one. No private business could ever operate at break-even or better with those sorts of make-work jobs. Our Fed government is a giant suck-hole for our hard earned dollars, and it ticks me off that NO ONE from either party can see to do anything about it.
It takes a special sort of delusion to relate the Democrats to hurting the poor
delusion? only on your part. obama suggested it, senate democrats voted for it and passed and obama signed it into law. it is the obama sequester. he owns it lock stock and barrel so please stop lying to people.
Correct we do have plenty of money!
It's called from each according to their ability.
To each according their need.
Obama should start in the Bahamas.
Quite a wealth gap over there.
See how well it works there before trying it out on us.
"mostly affecting lower-income Americans."
GOPers/Teatrolls: "Mission Accomplished."
Stop funding the death clinics of Planned Abortion. An easy half a billion dollars saved, along with hundreds of thousands of babies. A true win-win proposition.
Symptoms of trying to manage a budget. You were spending 100 but only had 80 and now you are spending 90 instead of the 100. Yes the spending cuts will be felt. If this is the only way to get the government to reduce spending then maybe we need a few more of these sequestrations. The idea that continuing to spend more than you have is not realistic I do not care what party is in charge. I worked for the government for a few years. They do not really spend on any stimulus as they want you to think (the Republicans were in charge when I saw it). They do spend money but they waste tons of money. For example, were I worked they had four to five person doing a job that took 2 persons. They low bid the equipment but then the Vendor socked it to the US on spare parts. Government knows what they are doing. They do not care; its free money to them. From us to them in taxes.
