High school visit added to first lady’s Chicago trip

(CNN) – First lady Michelle Obama’s trip to Chicago on Wednesday will include a stop at a public high school where the city’s rash of gun violence has been acutely felt.

She’ll stop at Harper High School, where 29 students, past and present, have been shot in the past year, according to the White House. Eight of those students died.

While in Chicago the first lady will also deliver remarks at a lunch meeting designed the curb youth violence.

Chicago has suffered a plague of gun violence in recent years - some 506 people were murdered in the city last year, according to local crime statistics, up from 433 in 2011.

The first lady’s trip to her hometown is part of a week-long effort by the White House to pressure Congress into passing stricter gun control measures, including an expansion of federal background checks.

On Monday, President Barack Obama spoke at a college in Connecticut, miles from the scene of December’s deadly school massacre in Newtown.

Family members of those killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School traveled with Obama to Washington to lobbying members of Congress.

Vice President Joe Biden and Attorney General Eric Holder have also joined the effort, delivering remarks to law enforcement officers on Tuesday and calling on Congress to act.

The Senate plans a vote on Thursday on whether to take up gun legislation, which faces a possible Republican filibuster.

An earlier version of this story erroneously reported the number of murders in Chicago last year.

Since she's making a stop at a school, the republicans need to dig up as much filth as they can. After all, an educated electorate is a threat to future republican office holders.
