Don't air NRA race, senator asks Rupert Murdoch

(CNN) - The National Rifle Association-sponsored NASCAR race slated for this weekend is "inappropriate in the immediate wake of the Newtown massacre," Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Connecticut, wrote to the race's broadcaster on Thursday.

"The race not only brings national attention to an organization that has been the face of one side of this heated debate, it also features the live shooting of guns at the end of the race," Murphy wrote to Rupert Murdoch, the chairman and chief executive of News Corporation, which owns the Fox network where the race will be broadcast.

In March, the Texas Motor Speedway announced the NRA had sponsored the NASCAR Sprint Cup event on April 13, which marked the first time the gun owners group has sponsored a race in NASCAR's top series.

Last year, the organization sponsored a Nationwide Series race at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

The April race had been promoted as the Texas 500 after the track's deal with Samsung ended last year.

The winners of races at the track are often given two revolvers and a cowboy hat while taking photographs in victory lane. The fastest qualifier is awarded a shotgun.

In his letter to Murdoch, Murphy cited the News Corp. boss' past support for tighter gun control laws in the United States, including a message Murdoch posted on Twitter shortly after the December Newtown shooting.

"Nice words from POTUS on shooting tragedy, but how about some bold leadership action?" Murdoch wrote.

"I would like to make a similar challenge to you," Murphy told the media mogul in his letter Thursday. "You should play a constructive role in our national dialogue by refraining from broadcasting the NRA 500. By airing this race you will be strengthening the brand of a radical organization that is currently standing in the way of meaningful progress on this issue."

Fox Sports remains under contract with NASCAR to broadcast certain Sprint Cup races.

CNN's Steve Almasy contributed to this report.

So while Murphy is trying to strip your second amendment rights he also wants to violate the NRA's 1st amendment rights. What a great guy.

If you don't want to watch a car race – change the channel. It IS that simple.

... but then again, it's not about the race at all ......

it's about someone else forcing their beliefs and opinions on everyone else.

four months is "immediate wake"? that explains a lot (about congress)...

"it also features the live shooting of guns at the end of the race," one shot each from a pair of revolvers, blanks, straight up in air, obviously in celebration – yes, this is clearly much more desensitizing than 90% of TV shows, movies and/or video games (not to mention the ACTUAL footage of drones blowing up actual people we see all the time).

I'm actually NOT a fan of NRA (like NASCAR though – full disclosure) but I am anti-stupid & Murphy's letter doesn't strike me as particularly more enlightened than any of LaPierre's...

Revolution = Evolution. If the governmnet does not respect or fear it's people then it no longer concerns itself with what the people think or feel. Liberals are somewhat happy that right now thier so call leaders are running the show and later it will flip to the right. The problem is that neither side really give 2 hoots about you or I until it is either election time or tax time. Read the Federalist papers and the Constitution, its all there like it or not, it also tells the American people what it should be doing right now.

As far as I am concerned the NRA is now a domestic terrorist organization. They threaten members of Congress...some even with death threats (several now have 24 hour security). They bully. They lie about the facts."

Ya mean like 1199SEIU?.........or the Teamsters?.......

and oddly enough...that security you mentioned......is probably ARMED

BeverlyNC it would seem that you and the people like you are the domestic terrorist. You want to squash any opposition to your viewpoint, present your own fake "facts" and "statistics" and demand that everyone believe them without question, deny other people their freedom of speech to support your own. Those of us that do actually think for ourselves find you and people like you scary and dangerous to our American freedoms

Simply put Senator...you are not our ruling royalty and your attempts to ensure your re-election are transparent to all...so go and enjoy a gun-toting-good-time at a NASCAR race...shame on you for using the deaths of innocents to promote your career!

This country is SO far away from the real problem with guns and violence it's almost comical. How about this for a solution? Enforce the damn laws you already have. One thing about this country, they always want more laws to fix simple problems and then never enforce them. I'm not a NASCAR or NRA fan but this race means absolutely nothing in the grand scheme of this country's real problems.

Dave and John john the pipers son,
Not sure why liberals don't enjoy watching people going in circles. You've been chasing your tails for years with one crazy scheme after another to deny other people their freedom of thought when it differs from yours.

Bullying? really? you sure you have that correct? It seems that you liberals are the ones that like to bully people that don't agree with you.

30,000 gun deaths per year. 20,000 of those are suicides.
50,000 intentional gun injuries per year
23,000 accidental gun injuries per year.

Can't we do something about that? Or is it OK with everybody?

    Sen. Murphy.
Feel free to resign at any time.
Last time I checked, the 1st Amendment didn't have a political correctness requirement.
NASCAR, FOX and the NRA did not cause any of these shootings.
    Don't like it... don't watch!
But keep your hands off of free speech and free press.

The NRA represents millions of law abiding citizens and voters in the United States. I guess their voice and representation do not or should not matter in this issue. Mr. Murphy is advocating censorship of the millions of voices that belong and support the opinions espoused by the NRA. I am advocating that Murphy be censored by the Senate ethics committee for his treasonous actions against the constitutional rights of the citizens of the United States!!!!!!!!
