No sense of urgency: Rocky road ahead for gun legislation in the House

Washington (CNN) – As the Senate opened debate on gun control measures for the first time in nearly 20 years, the path ahead for any gun control measure in the Republican-led House of Representatives is rocky and uncertain.

Family members of those killed in the tragic shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, spent three days shuffling from meeting to meeting with senators urging swift action. But across the Capitol there is no sense of urgency, as most rank and file House GOP members are taking a wait and see approach to moving any gun bill, while a bloc of Republicans members are solidly against considering new gun restrictions.

There shouldnt be a sense of "urgency". This all needs to be discussed and thought out without being hurried through, AKA the Affordable Care Act (OBAMACARE).

Nancy Pelosi on OBAMACARE – "But we have to pass the bill so you can find out what is in it, away from the fog of the controversy."

It cannot be that way with gun legislation. Besides, there needs to be more thought put into mental health checks and access as well as increased jail times for those that commit crimes with guns. We just cant let people out on "good behavior" after only serving half thier sentence. I mean, anyone can put a fake smile to get out of jail early.

And how about we go and round up all the thugs and gang members killing people each and everyday with guns they got by illegal means? Chicago seems like a good place to start.

We don't need gun legislation. We need crazy, insane people legislation. I guess the Democrats and libtards have no problem with the crazy person that used a knife to attack 14-16 people? Maybe the next one will use bombs or gasoline? It is clear crazy people are the REAL problem in this country. But the Democrats and leftists want to use these tragedies and the deaths to push their endless crusade against the 2nd Amendment and law abiding citizens.

Democrats would prefer a congress that enacts laws in the middle of the night under duress and extreme urgency like when Nancy Pelousy was speaker and all kinds of bills were passed without reading any of them. "We must pass the bill before we can tell you whats in it" This is the mentality of the democraticly led congress.

Now you begin to see articles on CNN about repealing the 2nd Amendment, which is the ultimate Democrat and leftist goal. Should that ever happen, it will also be time to repeal the 16th Amendment, the amendment that grants the government limitless access to our paycheck. It is time that privilege be removed or reeled in. Any government that would attempt to disarm their citizenry is one that should not be funded to do so.

Awww, how cute, you're trying to pretend that all the gun violence in the country is happening in inner cities and is perpetrated by minorities. How's all that reachy outy working for ya, eh? Fact is, studies have shown that the states with the weakest gun laws have higher incidence rates of gun violence. The numbers don't lie.

Let's get a digital "clock" going that keeps a running tally of th enumber of gun deaths on one side and the number of gun violence incidents overall on the other side and see how many people have to be killed or injured, commit suicide, or robbed, etc., while the GOP/Teatrolls do everything they can to either block gun safety legislation or gut it so thoroughly that it won't be effective (so they can later point and go "see...told you...is broken...neener neener cuz we broke it to self-fulfill our prphecy!!!").

interesting you twist from cities to states in your statement. the fact is that most large cities are inhabited primarily by minorities (which makes them a large majority in that city). these democrat controlled areas have astronomical crimes rates, just like chicago, new orleans, washington dc, etc. even in red states, the cities are largely demorcat and minority controlled.

so post your facts about states, but also post the facts for the large cities in them. you false and misleading statements will become very obvious.

hahahaha... a typical response from a person that cannot argue the facts.

Allow me to translate for other readers: "I, Sniffit, cannot argue intelligently against what you state because the facts of the matter totally support your statement. Therefore I am left with no other alternative but to call you names and hope dumb people believe me and don't notice my lack of facts or logic."

Sure, there's no hurry- 3,300 people killed by guns since December- they're just bodies right? Look if the GOP wants to stand in the blodd of dead school children with the NRA- that's their choice. Don't look for them to win any elections- especially since we now know Al Queda likes the NRA's gun laws.

You Libs have to realize that all of the gun laws proposed by the LEFT so far, would not have stopped Sandy Hook. Those kids would still have died. I dont want to sound cold about it, but, its true.

Until you really look at mental health, and actually lock bad people away..............they cycle will continue.

From 1994 to 2004, when Clinton's "Assualt Weapons Ban" was in effect, Columbine still happened. Just the other day, you had a crazy person go aroudn stabbing/slashing college students in TX. The same happened in China not too long ago as well.

Bad people will continue to do bad things. Criminals will still figure out a way to kill or wound people. Thugs wil continue to steal law abiding citizen's guns or just buy them off the black market. I dont see a gang member walking into the local gun store to fill out the NICS paperwork.

Ben Franklin said "Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety."

Gun laws will only affect law abiding citizens. If you ban X, Y, or Z..............guess who will still have and use X, Y, or Z? The CRIMINALS. There is a reason they are criminals in the first place..............they dont follow the law.

We have laws against drunk driving...........that doesnt stop hundreds of innocent people being killed on our roads each year due to drunk drivers. We have laws against murder. That doesnt stop people from dying.

Just because you make a rule or law, doesnt mean that all of the sudden whatever it is will stop and be nonexistant. Just the opposite. You think you have done some great thing, but then find out..............its still going on.

Just wait until they start talking about messing with the 1st Amendment. Controlling your phone or computer. Telling you which ones you can or cannot buy. Making you register them, so everytime you get online they know exactly what you are doing by the second.

Give up one liberty to have a small amount of safety.............then you do it again..............and again..............and again..................then we are Germany during Hitler's rule.

It is impossible to have a discussion with lefties when they simply can't stay on topic and keep introducing totally irrelevent topics into the discussion. "so post your facts about states, but also post the facts for the large cities in them. you false and misleading statements will become very obvious."

Not really. The fact is that a city of 8M that experiences 2,000 gun deaths/crimes/incidents per year has a lower gun violence incidence rate than a state of 3M that has 1,000 gun deaths/crimes/incidents per year. It's just the numbers and it doesn't matter what geographic boundaries. That's because theincidence rate is measured per capita, not per square mile. You don't hear about all the single murders or suicides or accidents that occur on a regular basis throughout states like Louisiana (which was top of the list for incidence rate AND for weakest gun laws) on the national MSM because it's not as sensational as gang violence and larger overall numbers that result from having a larger, higher concetration of population. The MSM will breathlessy yammer about how many murders occurred in Chicago because it's a bigger number...and it just doesn't "sell" as well to try to throw an article at the public that talks about how Louisiana has a higher per capita incidence rate of gun violence, particularly if the overall number of incidents is lower.

But please proceed, because it's still fairly obvious that part of what's driving your "analysis" is race, and the more I can get you to talk about it, the more damage you'll do to your position.

They do oppose them. They have flat out said that they would not work. Another example of double-speak by the gun-huggers. Anything that could potentially be used as a registry in the future will be opposed by the NRA, no matter how outrageous the scenario.

Sniffit is, of course, is once again indulging in name callling and demonization of those who have legitimate concerns, which is the democrat liberal response to anyone who opposes their agenda. Almost, but stopped short of calling someone a racist and quickly shift the context to obfuscate the argument. Once again, remember how the House had to pass Obozocare to find out what was in it, and guess what, the majority of Americans hate it even worse now and that number will to the repeal stage ni 2013.

    Well- sorry, facts are facts.
Reagan closed all the Sanatoriums for the mentally impaired.
The GOP is working (what 38 votes and counting?) to end the ACA, but more insidiously to drop millions nation-wide from Medicaid- that directly impacts mental health care.
And, finally, watch the NRA's lips. They used to be for background checks, but now wish to do away with them because they believe the prossess to be"ineffectual".

You need to understand cause and effect. Free the crazy people, take away mental health care, add guns and voila! Mass shooting deaths!
