Terrorist video used in ad against McConnell

(CNN) - A liberal nonprofit group said Thursday it would begin airing an ad hitting Senate GOP Leader Mitch McConnell that uses a video produced in 2011 showing an American al Qaeda spokesperson showing how to obtain guns in the U.S.

Americans United for Change, the group behind the ad, will initially spend $5,000 to air the spot in Lexington, according to spokesman Jeremy Funk.

"Most Kentucky residents want background checks for gun sales, but Republican leader Mitch McConnell is against them. So who does agree with Mitch?" a narrator asks in the ad.

A clip from the al Qaeda video shows California-native Adam Yahiye Gadahn saying “You can go down to a gun show at the local convention center and come away with a fully automatic assault rifle, without a background check, and most likely without having to show an identification card. So what are you waiting for?"

That particular section of the video is erroneous - it is illegal to purchase a fully automatic weapon in the U.S by anyone but a strictly licensed and regulated federal firearms dealer with special permission.

However, other types of guns can be sold at gun shows or through private sales without a background check, a fact some lawmakers want to change. The U.S. Senate voted on Thursday to overcome a filibuster led by some Republicans, including McConnell, against tougher gun laws, clearing the way for a major congressional debate on a package of proposals sought by President Barack Obama in the aftermath of the Connecticut school massacre.

“Do Sen. McConnell and fellow Republicans who oppose broader background checks realize how totally out of step they are with the American people considering the only people who agree with them are big gun manufacturers, criminals, and terrorists? Talk about bad company," wrote Tom McMahon, executive director of Americans United for Change, in a statement.

McConnell's campaign manager Jesse Benton responded to the spot.

"A lot of Kentuckians support the Second Amendment; that doesn’t make them al Qaeda. It’s outrageous the left would make the comparison, but not surprising considering their track record of bullying anyone who disagrees with their point of view," he said in an email.

The group is registered with the IRS as a 501(c)(4), which means it isn't legally required to disclose its donors.

Americans United for Change sounds like some sort of a corrupt George Soro's backed group that is housed in the headquarters of SEIU/Acorn, but then all of these dope smokers are.

It is disgusting to see the enemy from outside, understands the weakness of the people who are inside, who are not able to know what can finish them in a matter of a minute.

Memo to warped in SF: ACORN is gone, thanks to the heavily edited video courtesy of James O'Keefe. O'Keefe was forced to cough up a 100K fine as well, and he also tried to bugged Senator Landrieu's office. Delusional, again?

Bullying? by dems. our local political show has two dems, and two repubs, debating current topics. when the gop politicians were asked if they get pressured by the perty leaders to vote one way,his body langauge, and physical demeaner, said yes, and after a few seconds, painfully responded, well, not on every issue, aha, tell me more , thats about as honest as a gop guy can get. he likely faced much critizism over that. the party of, say only what your told, or else, primary fight with no money, as in, see ya

Ha , Priceless, Al Qaeda telling its supporters in the U.S. to go to gun show to buy guns. Guess private sales at gun show will now be prohibited . That would be a step in the right direction. And as far as McConnell is concerned,
he will have a challenge from his own party and lose the primary.

They do know you cannot buy a fully auto-matic weapon at a gun show without a crap load of paperwork, background checks, and a long long wait time right? I mean, that is just stupid.

This video does nothing to tie McConnell with the video. Its not like the terrorist said go to KY and get a gun!!!!!

Terrorist say alot of things that are not true. Doesnt mean they should be taken as truth because they are saying it.

Over 90% of American agree with background check. That is as high of a % as you could ever get over an issue. Repurg/TP only take marching orders from NRA, hell with the people's wishes. What lessons do they learn from the last embarassing loss–NOTHING. In fact getting worse digging deeper into their own graves. LET THEM DIE.

Being bullied by the left? Everyone knows what the message is concerning how easy it is to obtain an assault rifle. If the gop wants a fair argument they need to debate issues on the floor. Not filibuster everything that gets through commiee. The gop has shown its members lack of courage to go on record. Food for thought... Gop cant hide behind technical filibusters forever, its time give accounting of yourselves

That Al-Queda knows how to buy guns in America without detection is the proof that the NRA and what it stands for is essentially the support of terrorism- probably for the pure profitability of the gun manufacturers selling guns to Americans AND our enemies. This whole corrupt, immoral mess needs fixed now- and 90% of Americans agree.

So, GOP, stand with al-Queda or America?

The weapon Rick Warren's son used to kill himself was purchased over the internet: the serial number was filed off. Wonder who else was killed with that weapon? Does that sound like a well-regulated militia, or well-regulated anything?

You know I may or may not agree with their tactics but one thing I do admire about Americans United for Change: they are the gutsiest liberal group out there. These mofos have no problem going down the same path that conservative groups take. "You like slime", they ask? We do too! "You like making up lies and flinging mud"? We'll find the dirt on you!
There is a PLETHORA of crap that can be effectively brought to light and used against a lot of these so-called Conservative contenders and evidently Americans United have no problem rolling up their sleeves and reaching into the s hit pile to get their hands on it.
BRAVO!!! And may I say: about time. Two can play ANY game.

There is the idea that everyone should play by the same rules. Why should anyone be allowed a weapon if they are considered a danger to the rest of the community? Terrorists, criminals and the mentally ill should not be allowed to own or be able to purchace weapons. What is the problem with that? I believe that any sale or transfer of a firearm should be subject to a background check.
