Justices uphold state gun control law

(CNN) - The Supreme Court let stand New York's strict gun control law, rejecting an appeal Monday from a group of gun owners. At issue was whether the Constitution's Second Amendment provided a broad individual right to carry a handgun outside the home for self-defense.

New York's Penal Law 265.03(03) bans possession of a firearm in public - either openly or concealed - unless someone can show "proper cause" - beyond a desire for self-defense - to secure a carry permit.

It is becoming pretty clear. If this country continues to elect Democrats and leftists, our Constitution and Bill of Rights will eventually disappear. The government will dictate to the people what rights they are allowed, not the government of the People, by the People and for the People being told by those people what the government powers are. Thanks to the 16th Amendment, they already own your paycheck. Soon, very soon, we will all be government slaves once again.

"yee haw. Us New Yorkers wanna be just like those shoot first/ask questions later states that would have someone shoot your for not looking at them right". I can imagine a subway or bus ride with cowboys like this running around....good job SCOTUS. Let the yahoos carry and shoot each other just for whatever.

Now any criminal can be certain that the only armed residents in NY will be: police, security, body guards protecting politicians/ entertainers and them. The rest of the population are targets of opportunity.

Wait for the outrage to begin. It will be fun to watch the self-described defenders of State's Rights decry the unwillingness of the Court to do their bidding. Of course, the first thing they will scream about is " liberal NY", completely ignoring what life is like for the people upstate.

-My Rights are NOT a Bargaining Chip

The chairman of the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms, Alan Gottlieb, sent a message to members and contributors stating the bill "bans any federal gun registry and carries a 15-year prison term for anyone who violates it."

Never heard of this joke gun group. Probably a bunch of Soros funded progressive left wingers pretending to represent gun owners.

If only we had a federal government that followed and enforced the laws. Obama and the left has shown over and over that they don't think the laws apply to them. They are only to be used against their political adversaries. Leftist newspapers will again get the information and publish it without fear of prosecution.
    ****************************
If only we had a House that was willing to do their job, and fund the laws and agencies that are supposed to enforce the laws. Alas, they will not, mainly because the NRA and like industrial lobbying groups won't allow them to. Somehow, I don't think a group with 650,000 members is a creation of George Soros, but, if the loons want to believe that while they hug their guns at night waiting for the Zombie Apocolypse and the Black UN helicopters, go for it.

This isn't the Wild West. While it is true that New York does have higher gun violence than most cities, plenty of its citizens go their entire lives without having a gun pointed at them in anger.

This kind of mentality will only lead to more tragedies like Trayvon Martin's.

i am so glad that the liberal states are disarming their citizens. it will mean more and more liberals will fall victim to criminals with guns, thus leading to fewer liberals. thank you supreme court. i am in full agreement with your logic.

The citizens of Northfield, MN, when faced with a raid by the notorious James/Younger Gang went to the local hardware store and took rifles and ammunition from inventory to defend their town. The point is NOT that we have time to go home or the store to "git agun," the point is the movies are filled with lies. Citizens did NOT wander around town armed to the teeth. That's only on TV or in the movies. But Wayne LaPierre is either to stupid or too venal to understand.

Only in leftist looney tune land is a government that spends over $3.5 TRILLION dollars under or not funded. Do you honestly know how stupid you sound?

But the Obama administration sure had billions and billions for bogus green company scams and selling guns to known drug cartel members in the Fast & Furious fiasco.

Donna, why do you pretend? The GOP is working hard to end the 17th Ammendment (popular election of U.S. Senators), the USA PATRIOT Act assailed many parts of the Constitution and Bill of Rights- that came out of the Bush/Ashcroft Administration.
For oity sake take a Civics class.

Ask the ATF how much their budget was slashed during the Bush years. The ATF became the NRA's target after Waco, where the NRA embarrassed itself by defending a child molester who killed federal agents. F&F, btw, was a BUSH creation. If the GOP was not so intent on stragnling federal law enforcement, we might not be awash in guns. Only a complete NRA flunkie swallows the cause and effect of the GOP's budget cuts to the ATF. The GOP provides us with the best House that can be bought, and they do so willingly.

Donna, the SC, which has a conservative majority, ruled (or didn't) on this. Why do you loons continue to blame the lack of understanding fundamental logic and our Constitution on democrats?

If this was really eroding rights or whatever, the gun happy Scolia would have taken this up with all possible speed. The fact that he didn't means there is nothing here for you to complain about. Yet you will. And blame it on liberals. Even while republican after republican signs on.

if so, then why do leftists and democrats oppose voter id? voting is a right? it too should be subject to "restriction", the restriction that only legitimate citizens vote.

Voting is a a right that should not be supressed in the name of fictitious fraud. The GOP tried to disenfranchise thousands of legitimate voters for the sole reason of winning an election. Typical rightie-double-speak.

The Republicans are apparently willing to allow – 30,000 people – to be murdered every year so the gun freaks can have their 2nd amendment rights and their compensators.

The issue, I thought, was the court could give someone the ability to get a concealed permit to carry in a fairly loose state and make that valid all over the country. That sounds like trouble waiting to happen.

The Supreme Court saw a real and clear danger to society from gun violence, and assessed the restrictions New York placed upon gun use and ownership, and found those restrictions relevant to the danger and reasonable as a means of managing the risk.

Anonymous – if there were a real and clear danger of the democratic process in America being frustrated or corrupted commandeered by voter fraud, then reasonable, targeted restrictions might be upheld. However; no one has yet made the case that such a danger exists. All we see is radical conservatives trying to comandeer elections by means of voter supression. I would hope that the Court will reject those efforts.
