White House: Obama can't take position on Gosnell trial

(CNN) – President Barack Obama is "aware" of the Philadelphia doctor accused of murdering newborns and one woman, but can't take a position on it since the trial is ongoing, his press secretary said Monday.

The trial of Kermit Barron Gosnell has garnered renewed attention in the past week as some conservatives have protested the lack of coverage of the case in the mainstream media.

Gosnell has been charged with murder and other offenses related to illegal, late-term abortions. He's accused of causing the death of one of his female patients and killing seven viable babies in illegal abortions. The babies were born alive in the sixth, seventh and eighth months of pregnancy, but their spinal cords were allegedly severed with scissors.

Asked about the case Monday, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said while Obama was "aware" of the case, "the president does not and cannot take a position on an ongoing trial."

"Certainly the things that you hear and read about this case are unsettling but I can't comment further on an ongoing legal proceeding," he continued.

Most people will not know about the Gosnell trial because the mainstream media has done their best to ignore it. Casting abortion in a negative light does not fit the liberal media agenda.

@SuperD: And you're one of those "pro-life" Conservatives who believes in capital punishment, right?

@Fair is Fair: "That's the problem. You see, there is no hard and fast period of time to "wait". Personally I believe life begins at conception. But even for those that don't, when does "viability" come? Is it different from person to person, as it is for so many other things?: Does a one-size-fit-all approach work?"

Thank you for proving that you're completely ignorant – and that you don't have children.

You actually think that viability for a fetus is some kind of personality choice. There's this thing called the Internet where you can quickly find information about fetal development and viability.

Trying actually thinking next time before you post...

Chill out California. I have yet to read one comment where anyone supports this butcher. As for speaking negatively about a black person, apparently you don't know many of us. Actually I had absolutely no idea of this persons color.

The only reason Conservatives bring this up is because they know President Obama won't comment – because the case is ongoing – and they want to use this as a way to rile up their base in opposition to him. Oh, and to use it as a way to fund raise.

Only a truly dim person continues to fall for the BS put out by the GOP ...

This is sad, but I remember it was always this way before abortion was legalized and made safe. Oh well. Those repubs want to go back to the 1950s when lots of females died.

I hope the doctor that did this is shot. He ruined a lot of lives.

Can't or won"t . . . as it might upset his tenuous position on abortion and undermine the pro-abortion lobby he so desperately panders to.
