Washington (CNN) - Two women whose lives were touched by recent mass shootings shouted in the Senate chamber "shame on you" just after lawmakers defeated a bipartisan proposal to expand background checks on gun sales.
After the outburst on Wednesday, Vice President Joe Biden, who was presiding in the Senate, called for order. The women were later expelled from the Capitol although it did not appear they were arrested.
Patricia Maisch, of Tucson, Arizona, who took the gun magazine from the hands of the man who shot former Rep. Gabby Giffords and several other people, explained to reporters why she yelled at the senators.
"Because they are an embarrassment to this country that they don't' have any compassion or care for people who have been taken brutally from their families," she said.
Lori Haas of Richmond, Virginia, whose daughter, Emily, was shot but survived the Virginia Tech massacre also was angry.
"We are sick and tired of the death in this country and these legislators stand up there and think it's a bunch of numbers. There's been 187,000 Americans killed since Virginia Tech. My daughter was shot and injured six years ago yesterday. It's a shame, it's appalling, it's disgusting," she said.
The NRA rules !
Guns don't kill people , Bombs do !
Thanks ladies for saying what so many of us feel! It's not just about mass shootings, but about how easy it is to get a Deadly Weapon in our nation! It's also about the epidemic of gunviolence, that these congress people apparently feel it's the price we have to pay to protect the holy 2nd amendment! In the last 6yrs over187,000 human lives have been stopped by gun violence, due to the lackadaisical attitude of the people who can actually do something about this! Shameful & disgusting, indeed!!
This raises an interesting question. If 22 first-graders (and 6 brave teachers) being mutilated by an AR-15 didn't do it. If the deaths of 3,492 Americans since Newtown didn't do it, just HOW Americans have to die needlessly to get the attention of the filibustering Republicans in the Senate? How many more to reach the dense TEA Party Republicans in the House? How bad does it have to get before Republicans turn their backs on the NRA's cash?
What more can you say but that, SHAME ON YOU! The Senate WILLFULLY turned their backs on the majority of the American people today and let special interests pi** all over us. Shame on you is right. Absolutely disgusting.
Ladies, rejoice. This is nothing but another nail on the GOP coffin. Republican senators are so busy digging their own political graves the have lost all sense of direction. It's fun to watch.
They should go home and wash dishes and fold baby diapers.
For those keeping score. It's now lobbyist-1, Democracy-0. In other words big money wins the day.
These senators are cowards.
Sit down and shut-up ladies! There is a bigger picture than what you see here! You are selfishly allowing the government to cross the line to satisfy personal , emotional pains from your loss! We cant lose an entire country fo a few just to appease you sorry.there is a bigger issue here!
Because America needs more guns. Right.
This is only the beginning on expanded background checks. This will come up for a vote again.
Pandering fugly who deserves neither freedom nor safety...
It would be nice if they would put this much money and effort into getting help to the mentally unstable individuals that commit these crimes! however to label them as dangerous criminals is only correct after the incident has occurred. none of these people have had a criminal history, nor would a background check have kept them from purchasing a gun. " A gun in itself can be either a force for good or evil. Being in itself completely dependent upon the users intentions. The gun however is neither good nor evil, it is but only a tool. "
its sad to hear that these families lost loved ones, if someone loved was lost in this same type ov gun violence i know i would react the same, i am a legal gun owner bought my guns from a ffl dealer i got a back ground check and past so even tho i am a second amendment supporter whom never shot my guns, these jerks should have at least did something even if it was just to make it manditory at gun shows to get a background check gees even tho i dislike obama and his dictator party and his senate they could have done something!
Its about time that our representives listen to those that have put them into office. By allowing these gun control bills that our President want placed into law not only goes against everything our forefathers meant with the 2nd amendment, but use your common sense, if it becomes so difficult for lawful residents to procure guns, when the criminals will not have to jump through all the legal hoops what do you think will happen? The lawless will have the guns and we will not have a means to protect ourselves or our loved ones. If you feel that you were unheard when this law was not passed then get the gun you are allowed to have, learn how to use it and protect yourselfs from the unlawful criminal out there. Stop expecting everyone else to protect you, learn how to protect yourself and quit being such a wimp.
Shame on you for wanting to infringe the Constitutional rights of law abiding citizens! I'm sorry for your loss, but your loved one could just has easily died at the Boston Marathon bombing. Have you had a loved one killed by a drunk driver? They haven't banned cars and nobody is asking them to either.
Federal Government has NO business NOR constitutional authority making these types of laws in the first place. These encroachments are nothing more than attempts by psychopathic tyrants to register guns so they can later be confiscated.
This is shameful & pathetic! I don't blame these women for shouting the truth at these decievers! 87% of Americans were For this bill & congress just showed us who they truly work for & it ain't us!!
The real shame is how misinformed these women really are.
It is a sad when 90% of Americans support some safety measures with regards to guns in America and 46 Senators vote against it. No compassion or affection for 20 children 6 years old slaughtered in school with baseball size holes blasted through their little bodies! Because they are afraid of NRA or the crazy notion that control is an infringement upon the 2nd amendment! No rights are taken away to bear arms to protect from a tyrannical government by implementing some controls!!!An AR -15 is no match for an F-16 !!! Shame on the Senators for not protecting innocent citizens in favor of loopholes for criminals, crazies and recreation gun enthusiast ! Sad day!!! 54 Senators represented their citizens! 46 Senators represented Big Money. The families should post pictures!!!So they can see what they are supporting by being a NAY! Can't wait for elections!!!
Violent crime is actually way down over the past few decades. The statistics are all out there on FBI.gov.
Good for you Ms. Maisch. You spoke for 90% of US who had to settle for the least invasive law that should have included not just background checks but clips and no more assault weapons except for the military.
It took a woman to stand up!
What we're paying senators is a waste of money. We should stop, considering how much they get from lobbyists like NRA and the oil companies.
Prayers to the families but your tragedy does not warrant infringing on the rights of others. You should be demanding that govt and state agencies make a concerted effort to go after CRIMINALS, GANGS, DRUG DEALERS, ILLEGALS etc.
People just don't get it, making it harder for law abiding citizens to purchase guns will not stop the violence. Slow down or this could be another one of those fast laws, like Obamacare, where later down the road we find there are a lot of problems with it.
