(CNN) - Mark Sanford's besieged congressional campaign is being outspent almost 3-1 on the television airwaves by his Democratic foes, a media-buying source tracking the South Carolina House campaign told CNN.
Democratic candidate Elizabeth Colbert Busch and allied groups have spent well over half a million dollars to date on broadcast and cable ads in the Charleston and Savannah media markets, which blanket South Carolina's First Congressional District.
Sanford and the South Carolina Republican Party have spent just a fraction of that total on television spots, the media-buying source said. No outside GOP organizations or conservative groups have booked airtime in the district.
Colbert Busch's campaign, which began running TV ads before Sanford captured the GOP nomination, has been the biggest spender among the Democratic groups playing in the special election.
She has been aided by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee in Washington, which will go up with a negative ad against Sanford on Friday and has booked TV time through next week.
A Democratic outside group, the House Majority PAC, also started to pump money into the race this week and is expected to stay on air through the May 7 election.
The stark disparity should come as no surprise to those following the race closely.
The National Republican Congressional Committee told reporters Wednesday that they will not commit financial resources to the race in the wake of news that Sanford has been accused by his ex-wife of repeatedly trespassing on her property.
Sanford attempted Thursday to turn the spending disparity into an advantage by tying Colbert Busch to "Nancy Pelosi and national Democrats."
"My opponent has gone through great lengths to distance herself from the liberal Beltway crowd, but it simply isn't believable that those same folks would be trying to buy this race for someone who would truly be an independent voice in Washington," Sanford said in a statement released by his campaign.
Go get that seat Dems!!!
Elizabeth Colbert Busch sounds like a piece of work herself .
Yet anything is better then Anthony Weiner or Mark Sanford .
And we would believe Sanford because he has always been forthright and law abiding!!!.???
It doesn't matter how much the democrats spend on this election, Charles Manson would be elected to the House of Representatives if he ran in South Carolina!
I don't think that he can be trusted because of the past actions.
Maybe Sanford needs to go back to Jesus – this time not ask for forgiveness but rather try to get some financial support...
Independent , outspoken , family values, brought to court by former wife
what a guy , the ladies in SC will just run up the trail to vote for this clown NOT
What a goof-ball he is; even the GOP abandonned him
Sandford is a pitiful excuse for a man! Jenny is better off without him. The citizens of South Carolina will be better off without him as well.
That this guy is even in the run for another political office is beyond anyone's comprehension, but it is SC after all.
i dont care how much more money the dems spends in the deep south, it will be hard for a dem to win in the deep south. its time the south realize that the repub party is not in their best interest. they are more for international countries like china, because they want to give money to the rich to invest there. why is it that the so called job creators are making more money now than anytime in history, and yet they are not hiring in America. its time they get taxed a little more and rebuild America before its too late, and every one interest turns to china because of her modernization. if we rebuild this country, the rich will be the ones to benefit, because of the millions that will be hired and the money will goes back up, so if they invest in our country with a little more taxes to rebuild our crumbling country, they will reap the benefits.
Can't he find a real job? Gotta get back on the gov't dole?
He smiles upside down, just like Paul Ryan. Something wrong about that.
It's over. Don't cry for me Argentina.
if democrafts were in charge in south carolina i would buy my vacation home at myrtle beach.
We will see if money can buy elections.....(sarcasm, we know the answer)
Sanford is definitely a pitiful person. I put him in the same category as Anthony Weiner – both should be out of public office forever – and get a job – and go to church or something.
I am in the wrong business. I should be making political ads for the liberal;'s. Now why do you suppose they are spending oodles of money in South Carolina where they know Mark Sanford doesn't have a snowball's chance in hell of getting elected ??? Or, could they be wrong ??? Relax folks, Sarah Palin COULD be your next president. And then you would really howl !!!
If the voters of SC elect Sanford after all he's done, then SC will supplant Mississippi as the "Great State of Stupid". And they will deserve it. Colber-Busch seems to have her negatives as well, but it's like comparing a grape to a watermelon!
Sanford's latest political ad criticizes Colbert Busch's claim that she knows how to create jobs (which she has actually done professionally). By their skewed reasoning, the fact that labor unions support her indicates that she couldn't possibly support job creation. Hmmmm – it's my understanding that labor unions actually support people who create JOBS! Unions are pretty much all about jobs – American jobs, jobs that pay a living wage, jobs that include benefits for workers (not just the top 5 or 6 executives). Yes, Colbert Busch accepts intellectual and financial support from people who want good jobs.
South Carolina, the eyes of America are on you...again! Do the decent thing this time. P.S.-in La., we flunked our test re: David Vitter.
It does not matter. South Carolina voters will STILL vote against their best interests and vote this shmuck Sanford back in office. You read it here first.
