Obama receives more briefings on Boston manhunt

Washington (CNN) - President Barack Obama was again briefed Friday by his top national security team as a massive manhunt unfolded for one of the suspected perpetrators in the Boston Marathon bombings.

The briefing concluded shortly after 4 p.m. ET, according to a White House official. He then called Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick and Boston Mayor Thomas Menino "to express his condolences for the MIT police officer who was killed overnight," the official stated.

"The President said that the entire country is behind the people of Boston as well as Massachusetts, and that the full force of the Federal Government will continue to be made available until those responsible are brought to justice," the official said.

Lisa Monaco, assistant to the president for Homeland Security and Counterterrorism, briefed the president Friday afternoon in the Oval Office.

Earlier in the day, Obama met in the Situation Room with more officials, including Monaco, Vice President Joe Biden, Attorney General Eric Holder and FBI Director Robert Mueller. It began at 9:45 a.m. ET and ended at 10:45 a.m. ET.

Other top officials present included Obama's chief of staff Denis McDonough and National Security Adviser Tom Donilon.

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, Secretary of State John Kerry, and CIA Director John Brennan participated in the morning briefing by videoconference, the official said.

CNN identified Kerry, along with Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel and Director of National Intellegence James Clapper, entering the White House later Friday, though a White House official said they were attending a previously scheduled meeting of top national security officials that does not include the president.

Obama was briefed overnight by Monaco on the situation unfolding in Boston and Watertown, Massachusetts.

Napolitano, previously scheduled to testify at a Congressional hearing Friday, cancelled her appearance because of the ongoing situation in the Boston area.

    no death penalty in liberal massachusetts. he'll live a long life in prison if captured, all at the tax payers expense, even the people he injured. welcome to liberal justice america.
    ================================
    I hear the death penalty actually costs more than life imprisonment after you pay the lawyers during the long (too long)appeals process. That process needs fixing. Don't worry, a good-looking kid who killed and wounded children will have a short and traumatic experience in prison.

    Say there "buckeye".........maybe the reason the cops are armed with assault weapons is so they don't get outgunned by the bad guys that can currently purchase those same weapons. Ever think about that? Is anyone wondering where and how easy it was for these two young creeps to purchase and assemble explosives? And if they were in a shootout with the cops, they apparently found it easy to obtain firearma as well. But according to the NRA and the GOP, our best course of action is still to do nothing...........amazing.

    This story has all the makings of a good Friday Fight Night thread for CNN.
    You have the necesary components of the rabid nutjobs that will blame the President for the actions of two attention-seeking turds, and then you have those that have read the story, cross-referenced and are staying abreast of any new developments.
    @Lynda/Minnesota
    CNN reported this morning that the 2nd guy may have made it to Connecticut. They may have recanted that since. I haven't been able to confirm as I am techniclly at my desk "working". Lol!
    You have good self-preservation instincts as demonstrated by your urge to bolt this thread. I won't be too far behind! Wink!
    Safe weekend.

    If or shall I say "when" this guy gets caught, and ends up in prison, they better put him in isolation, or something. I mean, if there's any broom handles laying around, he'd better watch his back, he may end up like Jeffrey Dahmer.

    "no death penalty in liberal massachusetts. he'll live a long life in prison if captured"
    Maybe, but only if there are no federal anti-terrorism laws that can apply. As the case of Timothy McVeigh demonstrated, there is a Federal death penalty law.

    I called for Enhanced Interrogation Techniques for the dipstick that was mailing the ricin letters.
    --
    What difference does it make? You got your panties in a bunch when the previous administration used "Enhanced Interrogation Techniques" – which YOU at the time labelled "torture" – and yet, you advocate for it now? Why the double standard?

    In honesty Fair, I said that jokingly. I don't condone torture unless Jack Bauer is doing it and unfortunately 24 isn't on the air anymore.

    The FBI is the lead in this case at this point and many of us *Liberal* Massachusetts would prefer this person be subjected to the Federal Death penalty. However, it is more likely, this boy will end up committing Suicide by cop.

    Frankly, after the death of the 8yr old, I rather see this killer be placed with general population... See how long he remains in one piece...

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

    Wether he purchased or stole it, he got the gun used in he armed robbery of the 7-11 and the gunfight with the police from somewhere. If it was the former, a background check would have stopped the purchase because he's a foreign national. If it was the latter, the gun owner needs to answer a few questions about why he was so irresponsible that he allowed his gun to end up in the hands of terrorists.

    Tiz,

    No one was attempting to blame the NRA for this. However, after OK City, efforts to enable law enforcement to track potential bomb componants were blocked by conservatives who claimed it was a government overreach. Do you think it was an over reach?

  16. New Democrat Party Platform

    It has become clear, the American people MUST be protected from dangerous pressure cookers in the hands of criminals. The Democrat Party will therefore adopt a party platform which calls for a total BAN on pressure cookers. It is clear you do not NEED pressure cookers as you can cook in small sauce pans. If we cannot ban pressure cookers we will fight for a limit on the size of pressure cookers. Nothing over 7oz pressure cookers will be allowed. If it saves just one life, it is worth it. Stop the insane proliferation of pressure cookers in this country.

    I saw the nice photo of O being briefed in the Situation Room on Boston. So I guess we are waiting for the glorious pic of him during Benghazi in the Situation Room? Where was O during the Osama raid, Hurricane Katrina and Boston? In the Situation Room. How do we know? Because he makes sure there are great pictures of him in the SR. So for the 7 hours when our Libyan ambassador was missing, where was O? I know the clever Left will say he has a phone, but was that a situation that he could "call in to" (he didn't "call in to" the Osama raid when he was on the golf course – he was brought into the SR to sit in the corner)? If the clever Left thinks that the missing and killing of our ambassador (hasn't happened since the 1970's) was something that he could call in to because he was too busy doing something else, could we get a photo or explanation of what the other thing he was doing that was so important? It's not hard to see through a double talking glory hound.

    And a wink to you my friend. I decided to do some spring cleaning today (don't ask me why ... we're still snowed in and looking more like Christmas than April) instead of doing the usual back and forth here on the ticker.

    Have a good weekend and stay safe. I'm actually going to take a break and watch some CNN. Hopefully what I watch won't be recanted by this evening. Never seen so many so earger to get it wrong by becoming the news instead of reporting the news. I know, I know. It's the new norm.

    It is amazing to me that the 2nd amendment folks are still screeching about their "God Given" right to own weapons that are really just toys for little boys to go "pop. pop, pop." Where was your screeching when the Patriot Act took away some of your rights, where was your screeching when politicians decided you can become an enemy combatant (sorry sp) just by declaration (not trial) and held in prison, basically forever. But now the most preclious of your rights are under attack. Voter Supression is just the first step to taking away your vote completely and letting a Corporate Dictatorshlp make all your decisions for you.

    While none of the rational posters on this site are blaming the GOP or the NRA MANY of the usual lunatics you're obviously affiliated with had already decided that somehow, some way President Obama and the Muslim Brotherhood were involved.
    The only reason ANYONE would respond to posters like you is out of sheer boredom like I am right now.
