Obama says capture closes key chapter in bombing tragedy

(CNN) – President Barack Obama said at the conclusion of the Boston Marathon bombing manhunt on Friday night that "we've closed an important chapter in this tragedy," adding that those who carried out the "vicious attack" failed because Americans "refuse to be terrorized."

Speaking at the White House, Obama praised the work of law enforcement after they captured the second of two suspects following a daylong search, and pledged continued federal law enforcement, homeland security and intelligence resources to the ongoing investigation.

Obama maintained "whatever hateful agenda" may have been behind the attack that killed three people and injured 180 others on Monday in two blasts near the finish line of the storied road race "will not and cannot prevail."

The president said there remained many unanswered questions and cautioned against jumping to conclusions as the investigation continues.

He urged people not to "rush to judgment" about motivations or entire groups.

Obama expressed gratitude for local, state and federal law enforcement efforts and praised the city and the nation in the face of an attack being investigated as a terrorist act. He noted that it did not ultimately succeed.

"They failed because the people of Boston refused to be intimidated," Obama said. "They failed because as Americans, we refuse to be terrorized."

An Obama administration official said the president heard that suspect Dzhokar Tsarnaev, 19, had been taken into custody just outside Boston in Watertown from staff and media reports. FBI Director Mueller called him to brief on details, the official said.

The other suspect, a man identified as his brother, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, died early on Friday following a shootout with police, officials said.

Yes American are immune to fear, terrorism, atrocities and slavery. We American can sacrifice everything for nation. We protect our and others freedom, liberty, human conditions and spiritual liberty. America enslaves none and protects its words by action.US respect human dignity with integrity, equality and justice without discrimination. America protects religious freedom but destroys those who hurt other religions.

Watching first responders and civilians run toward a bombing, to help the injured people at the Boston Marathon. Instead of running away. Made a huge impact on me. It restored my faith in humanity. I just wish!! It wasn't proven in that way. Bostonian's = Courageous and Stong

Simple, sincere, well stated and appreciative. Congrats to all of the participants in all of the agencies and the public for pooling resources and helping each other in this search.

We are on the precipice of a great time in America if we can start doing what we did this week- working together for the best possible outcome. I'd love to see a similarly intense level of resources dedicated to eradicating gangs...

Hats off to Beantown for honoring the fallen and the injured by bringing these guys down.

Bush was always held accountable. When do we start holding this administration accountable? They are always let off the hook. Surprised Holder hasn't jumped in to make sure this murderer gets an attorney before speaking to anyone. Stay tuned!!

Hey Obamanation, why don't you do something about the left and its "hateful agenda". The Marcusian "repressive tolerance" that's being practices is nothing more than hate disguised as "tolerance". Its '1984' come to fruition!

America refuses to be terrorized? What do you call closing down 100 square miles, ordering people to cower in their homes behind locked doors, and putting 9000 heavily armed agents in the streets? That does not smack of courage to me. Courage would be "go about your business, and make a citizens arrest with your firearm should you run into the brigand."

And I refuse to give up my right to protect myself and my loved ones simply because dems fear guns. It's good that they caught those responsible, but they had to declare martial law to do it. I prefer a citizenry that can defend itself no matter the terrorist, domestic or foreign.

Something about all this stinks ... just as 9/11 did.
See report by Lt. Colonel Potter on youtube, or other sites. Confims that SEAL black-ops agents were doing 'drills' in the square at the time the explosions happened.
On 9/11, Guilliani and police force were doing 'drills' at building near WTC towers.
Again in London, Guilliani and british forces were doing 'special drills' in subway at the same location and time it was bombed....
Connect the dots, folks. Potter seems to have it right. Press perpetuates lies.

Excellent work law enforcement. Thats why I like this president, he knows what's important and gets it done, calling the act terrorism immediately or at whatever point is semantics
