Obama says capture closes key chapter in bombing tragedy

(CNN) – President Barack Obama said at the conclusion of the Boston Marathon bombing manhunt on Friday night that "we've closed an important chapter in this tragedy," adding that those who carried out the "vicious attack" failed because Americans "refuse to be terrorized."

Speaking at the White House, Obama praised the work of law enforcement after they captured the second of two suspects following a daylong search, and pledged continued federal law enforcement, homeland security and intelligence resources to the ongoing investigation.

Obama maintained "whatever hateful agenda" may have been behind the attack that killed three people and injured 180 others on Monday in two blasts near the finish line of the storied road race "will not and cannot prevail."

The president said there remained many unanswered questions and cautioned against jumping to conclusions as the investigation continues.

He urged people not to "rush to judgment" about motivations or entire groups.

Obama expressed gratitude for local, state and federal law enforcement efforts and praised the city and the nation in the face of an attack being investigated as a terrorist act. He noted that it did not ultimately succeed.

"They failed because the people of Boston refused to be intimidated," Obama said. "They failed because as Americans, we refuse to be terrorized."

An Obama administration official said the president heard that suspect Dzhokar Tsarnaev, 19, had been taken into custody just outside Boston in Watertown from staff and media reports. FBI Director Mueller called him to brief on details, the official said.

The other suspect, a man identified as his brother, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, died early on Friday following a shootout with police, officials said.

– CNN's Jessica Yellin contributed to this report.

    > Mother Zubeidat Tsarnaeva told Russia Today that the FBI had been checking on Tamerlan for three to five years.

And then there is THIS chapter that the Obama administration and FBI will have to explain. It is clear somebody dropped the ball big time. Was it for the same reason the Obama administration played down terrorism at Ft. Hood and in Benghazi? The same theme keeps popping up. Ties to extremiist Islam ignored or not followed up on. Eric Holder needs to go and go fast. Unfortunately we are stuck with Obama for another 3.5 years. Stupid, stupid Americans.

Heck, it is quite evident that most of us trust President Obama at his word which is why he was so easily re-elected and why we would re-elect him again to a THIRD TERM if only we could.

    Two Terms is fine .

""They failed because the people of Boston refused to be intimidated"

That's a compete lie. The city of Boston was essentially shut down. People locked down in their homes. Mass transportation stopped. Thousands of police and military. armored vehicles. Over one 19 year skinny kid. Not necessarily criticizing any tactics used but to say Boston was not intimidated by this guy is absurd. The whole city was scared to death.

This is looking more and more like Obama's 9/11. Warning signs ignored or not followed up by the FBI? The mother says the FBI has been talking to them for 3-5 years?? A foreign government warning us about them??? Just what the heck does it take to get the attention of the FBI anyways?! The Obama administration and their sycophants in the LSM are not going to be able to ignore and cover this up like they did Benghazi. This was an attack on the homeland by people we had been warned about.

Some heads need to roll at the FBI.

But, he's wrong about that. Two nuts bomb a marathon race and an entire city was terrorized and locked down. We witnessed an innocent person's civil rights thrown out the window as he was unceremoniously ordered to strip naked in public out of fear of what he might have on his person. The terrorists won this round – we were terrorized and the whole world knows it.

To not have been terrorized would have been to go on with our lives as though nothing had happened, while we found and caught them. But, that is not what we did, is it?

how many attacks on the usa is this since obama was elected? at least one, maybe two a year. of course you have to include that famous case of work place violence at ft. hood in the list. you know the one where an army officer is in contact with a radical muslim cleric, has soldier of allah on his card and shouts allah akbar while gunning people down.

Jon Samuel is rigt. We have been intimidated. And contrary to President Obama's claim, we do not refuse to be terrorized. Cancelling the Bruins and Red Sox ball games for Friday night is an example of how much we feared this one sole terrorist. The Boston area people and government were scared to death of another attack. Recall the terrorist fought off the entire police the night before. So much for the power of the police.

Mitt Romney once said we don't need more police officers but boy, was he wrong. And thank you President Obama for making all resources available for federal, state and local agencies and the intelligence community so that they could safeguard the country and apprehend these terrorists.

Better shut it down as opposed to more people being killed with gunfights and/or bombs...I agree with the way Mass. handled it the way they did...I'm retired Law Enforcement, and they did it the right way with cooperation of the citizens..Things always work out with cooperation from all sides and come together...It saved more lives had people been out and about.

  15. How will this one be covered up?

If this was a success I'd hate to see a failure. Obama remains as clueless as ever. He continues to deny the battle we are engaged in. What happened in Boston will be happening in other Large urban areas of this country as long as Obama's policies of denial and dismissal are in place. How many dead Americans are we going to tolerate from this administration before Obama is held to account?

At least under President Obama's leadership, no American sky scrapers collapsed and our Pentagon wasn't attacked and our planes weren't used as missiles and thousands of Americans didn't die. And we didn't have to invade a sovereign nation or two nations to get the terrorists.

Pres. Obama is a Lawyer. Any sensible lawyer of any kind never rush to the judgement first before finding the facts first. Well done Mr. President. You made me very proud of you. You are a very reasoning man. Keep it up your good job and use your wisdom/judgement for the rest of time left in performing your job as a President.

    "...Americans "refuse to be terrorized."

Except if it's heavily-militarized police forces suspending constitutional rights to conduct door-to-door searches under the guise of exigent circumstance.

Don't get me wrong – I'm glad they caught the guy but I don't think people should have so readily surrendered their rights simply to appear cooperative. Saying, "No, he isn't in this house," should have been good enough.

The country was indeed terrorized. The fact that these two people were able to shut down an entire cirty the size of Boston says just the oposite of what OBama is saying. What happened this week will only invite more terrorism.

Of course it is terrorism. So was Ft. Hood; Major Hassan even carried business cards proclaiming himself a "Soldier of Allah" but that was before the election. Obama was able to get away with lying through his hind parts about both Ft. Hood ("workplace violence?") and Benghazi, with the help of the pathetic, face-licking lapdogs in the mainstream press who are supposed to be protecting our freedoms. They needn't flatter themselves; they are bigger failures than this Administration, and their failure has facilitated Obama's double failure. Just pure pathetic. Ft. Hood needs to be acknowledged as terrorism so that families of the victims will be better taken care of, and the victims can get the Purple Heart Medals that they DESERVE! Get your head out for a change, Barry-O!!!
