Poll: Pelosi least liked congressional leader

(CNN) – Republican candidates running for office sometimes use Nancy Pelosi's name like a curse word.

Perhaps they've seen polling that indicates the House Democratic leader is the best known but least liked congressional leader, as indicated by a new Gallup survey released Wednesday.

According to the poll, 48% of Americans have an unfavorable opinion of Pelosi, while 31% view her in a favorable light.

Former Gov. Mark Sanford, for example, plans to solo debate against Pelosi's positions Wednesday as he campaigns for a special congressional election in South Carolina, saying his opponent, Elizabeth Colbert Busch, has only agreed to one debate.

"Because my opponent is refusing joint appearances to answer questions about where she stands on the issues, all we can assume is that she is going to be a reliable vote for the Pelosi-Obama agenda, were she to be elected," Sanford said in a statement.

Colbert Busch's team responded, saying the Democratic candidate is "spending her time with real people who support her campaign."

Of the people surveyed for the poll, 79% have some knowledge of Pelosi, while 21% either have no opinion about the congresswoman from California or because they have never heard of her.

According to the poll, none of the other three congressional leaders have particularly strong marks. In fact, none of them top 31% in their favorable ratings, and all four have higher unfavorable ratings than favorable.

House Speaker John Boehner has an unfavorable rating of 41%, slightly below that of Pelosi, his predecessor. Thirty-one percent have a positive opinion about the Republican from Ohio. Twenty-eight percent have no opinion.

On the Senate side, just over a quarter of Americans–27%–have a favorable opinion of Majority Leader Harry Reid, while 38% view him unfavorably and 35% have no opinion. Republican leader Mitch McConnell, who's up for re-election next year, has a 26% favorable rating and a 34% unfavorable rating. Forty percent have no opinion on the lawmaker from Kentucky.

For the survey, Gallup interviewed 1,012 adults by telephone from April 11 through April 14. The sampling error is plus or minus four percentage points.

"I don't think she cares. Really, the only poll that counts is from her own district and on election day! I don't like her either but that don't matter much!"

Indeed. Somewhere in heaven, Tip O'Neil is getting his giggle on.

She was at least 5 times MORE EFFECTIVE than Boehner is. I don`t know why Americans tolerate incompetence from Republicans.

Pelosi is a woman that isn`t a blonde , bimbo, stepford wife or a gun-totting Caribou Barbie. She has an intellect and isn`t afraid to stand up for something. Those are the reason the rightwing hates her and has smeared her as someone to fear but when you look at the facts; when you look at the substance, McConnel, Cantor & Boehner should be far more reviled than her.

At least 50% of the population should admire her and come to her defense for being strong willed even if they don`t agree with her.

"Are we past the point of no return?"

Yes, the GOP/Teatrolls are apst the point of no return. They spent 60+ years alienating minorities and there is no way to stop the demographic shifts from (a) taking away white majority and (b) killing the GOP's strangelhold over many many congressional districts. No amount of election process and voting rights tomfoolery can save you.

I do not see how John Boehner can be ranked; he never has been nor will he ever be a ... leader.

Hooey. The poor polling is the result of right wing propaganda. Ms. Pelosi is the most successful and most productive speaker of the house in recent history. Is it that the right has a problem with successful women? Or do they prefer abject failures like John Boehner who is the least productive speaker in history? Yeah, propaganda works on the gullible and intellectually weak. Doubt that? Look at the high proportion of republican birthers. or are they just too stupid to realize that hawaii is part of the US?

Apparently morons have short memories, otherwise Newt Gingrich would win this least-liked accolade, hands down.

Also, Pelosi's approval rating is being tanked by association with the overall POOR performance of this pathetically [R]-led House.

Minority Leader Pelosi received over 80% of the votes from her San Francisco constituents in the poll that really counts.

  21. Whoa!

I am concerned about the effects that the left-wing media is having on Liberals in this country. Evidently you people are being "programmed" everyday from outlets like MSNBC, Daily Kos, etc.. It is evident in some of the responses shown on this forum. The spewing saliva is almost audible as you guys are just about to start foaming at the mouth.

I think that anybody from the dis-enlightened state of GA who can post this gem: "Are we past the point of no return?".....should be given some special funding from the [D]s to continue posting his [R] view of the world. You just cannot make-up and publicize this level of disconnect from reality, something the [R]s continually give out for FREE!!!

I f you are the least liked member of the lest liked institution in this country, then you have achieved the level of being DESPISED. If you think about it, it is pretty hard to gain that level of notoriety unless you are really trying to p*ss off every person in this country.

Did you Pelosi haters even read past the headline? Every Congressional leader had terrible ratings, and the large numbers of people that never heard of or have no opinion of all of them makes it clear that America is pretty sick of nothing being done by use of hundreds of filibusters and total lack of compromise by extremists on both ends. However, one party pledged to a lobbyist instead of their own country. A single poll is seldom an accurate gauge of real public opinion, but the results of national elections are.
