Photo: McConnell returns punchline, awaits drink

(CNN) – Mr. President: Mitch McConnell is ready to have that drink.

The Senate Minority Leader's campaign team posted a photo on Twitter of McConnell sitting at a bar with an empty seat and two drinks.

"Greetings from coal country!" read the tweet, directed at President Obama.

The tweet came in response to one of the president's biggest lines of the night Saturday during his comedic routine at the annual White House Correspondents' Dinner.

Setting up the joke, Obama reminded his audience of his recent congressional outreach, in which he's hosted two dinners with Republican senators.

"Of course, even after I've done all this, some folks still don't think I spend enough time with Congress. 'Why don't you get a drink with Mitch McConnell?" they ask. Really? Why don't you get a drink with Mitch McConnell?"

Amid the applause and laughter, he added: "I'm sorry. I get frustrated sometimes."

In the new photo, McConnell sits smiling in one of two chairs at the corner of a bar, pointing invitingly to the other seat. The Republican senator from Kentucky has a beer, while a glass of red wine sits idly by the empty chair.

Speaking of "empty chair," the tweet was also directed at Hollywood legend Clint Eastwood, who notoriously spoke to an empty chair meant to represent Obama at the Republican National Convention in August.

McConnell faces re-election next year.

– CNN's Paul Steinhauser and Ashley Killough contributed to this report.

It would be a better pic if the senator has his tie askew and his sleeves rolled up. Then I'd know he was really in a bar and ready to drink, not pose.

Reblogged this on The New Media Experiment and commented:
This is a fun Twitter War to follow between Obama and McConnell. Maybe McConnell's social media outreach has improved since I blogged about it in February.
Also, excellent choice in leaving red wine for Obama–giving off the appearance that he's elitist.
    Well done, Mitch.

What's with Repubs and empty seats? Don't they have real friends to talk to anymore?

Oh No, not another empty chair!

You don't need an empty seat McConnell, we know what you're going to say to everything, NO, NO, NO, NO and NO.

Even before you hear the question.

Go on Mr. President, take him up on it.

The laughing time was over on Saturday. We are back to real business. Does McConnell has nothing to do?

( go one state north ) that's where the coal mines are.

Mitch McConnell even in this picture, You sir are the true
    empty chair.

I guess good ole Mutch, wants to discuss how
he's going to make you a 2 Term President & No More.

Mutt McConnell is one of the worst Senators I have
ever see in this country history.

Please Kentuckyians. I implore you, even if you
vote in another Republican back as your senator.

Vote Out This Tired Old Useless Man.
Mutch McConnell is garbage & should go. NOW.

Another Republican, and another empty chair. It didn't do much for Romney, or the Appallacian Trail guy, and it won't work for McConnell.
When will these guys get back to reality? Cheap theatre is just that.

"Also, excellent choice in leaving red wine for Obama–giving off the appearance that he's elitist."

Right, while Mitchy-poo's manly beer has the color of horse urine and he sits there with his legs crossed holding an unnatural pose like the effete, emasculated hoty-toity little turd that he is. Good job indeed. Please proceed.

If nothing else, republicans do love to drink. I'd bet some of their signature policies have come from the bottom of a case or two.

    mmk1821: 1st, Mitch McConnell doesn't & haven't drink
a glass of beer in over 35yrs, he is the White Wine elite Himself.
That is already a known fact.

2nd: This empty chair Motif that the Republican Party seems
to want to bring as a date to s party , Isn't helping them.
A majority of Americans knows that Republican Party, is
the Elite Party & that is why they lost .

Now you see why this is s pathetic joke , that
will show Mitch is really the Empty Chair in this picture.

When a Senator filibusters his own proposal he is nothing but an obstructionist. He's what's wrong with the Republican Party – a slimy politician pretending to support the poor, white folks while actually pandering to the fat-cats.

Mich the beer drinker & Obama the wine drinker; just love those macho Draft Dodging Repubs.(Bush/Cheney) & their attempt to "Out-Man" the Dems. This is a window into some deep seated Coward Disorder.

unfortunately, he will get re-elected – That's the way it is . I remember when my parents voted for our senator, back in the 50's / 60's / 70's. Once they get their name & pic on every billboard in their state, not to mention taking out ads in practically every newspaper in their state, including radio & T.V. ads, especially right before their election. They got my parents vote when they tell them that they are going to bring enough federal money into your state to buy & have a set of Brittanica / Colliers / & World Book in every classroom, or school in the state, (in the 60's) and bring in enough federal money to stock every lake or pond in every state park, (or any other park) in your state. Not to mention that they will bring in enough money to make sure their state has hundreds of million of pounds of "salt & cinders" to melt the snow, then the roads ends up with nothing but pot holes in the whole state. I mean, the list goes on. Now Days, it seems like they've got other uses for the federal money that comes in.

Yes, you could say our President likes wine .. there aren't too many people in this country who doesn't. He likes beer, too, Mr. McConnall, or have you forgotten the special beer they make at the White House now, and when the public wanted the recipe, they not only sent the recipe out to everyone, they showed on t.v how to make it. And when compared to you, sir, I would say President Obama is definitely elite. And he loves his family, America, and its people .. and he shows it every day. What have you done lately, for anyone but yourself and the top 1%? Let me guess ... nothing!
