(CNN) – Regrouping with the nation's leading law enforcement representatives three weeks after bipartisan gun-control legislation suffered a surprising defeat in the Senate, Vice President Joe Biden indicated he will begin a new push to rally the American public around the issue, according to attendees of the meeting.
"He said he is committed to seeing this through. He wants to hit the road and interact with stakeholders and the public in general and continue to educate them on what the purpose of this legislation is," said Jon Adler, President of the Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association and one of the participants in the meeting.
The previously announced White House meeting on Thursday – with about 16 representatives from various law enforcement groups – lasted about 90 minutes. According to another participant, Biden's purpose was to get a sense of what gun control proposals enjoy the most support among the law enforcement organizations' memberships.
"It was very clear to everyone that he supported a second round of discussions about what legislation was appropriate and possible," said Jim Bueermann, the president of the Police Foundation.
Specifically, Biden said he would focus on rejiggering two major proposals that were defeated last month but enjoy a majority of support among the American public: expanded background checks and closing loopholes on gun-trafficking.
Biden did not hint at how confident he was that legislation of some kind would eventually get passed but said that he felt "morally obligated" to keep pushing in the wake of the Sandy Hook shootings.
"I felt he was very solemn, sincere, and soft-spoken," Adler said. "This was not a thumping of the chest at all."
Still, the Vice President expressed that he sees "the glass as generally half full."
"All of us in the room have optimism of about the passage of reasoned gun legislation," Bueermann added. "This was a bit of a reality check for all of us. We re-affirmed to each other that this still makes sense."
In a sign that the White House has yet to fully formulate its next steps on the issue, Biden told the group that this was a preliminary meeting to get their input and that he had not yet spoken with President Obama on what his efforts would be going forward.
"He made clear that he wanted to get our input up front," said Adler.
Biden's office would not comment on the meeting. A White House official said the vice president would continue to meet with groups who are active in the gun debate.
Meanwhile, in a speech to Mexican University students Friday, President Obama said he too remains committed to the issue.
"I will continue to do everything in my power to pass common-sense reforms that keep guns out of the hands of criminals and dangerous people, that can save lives here in Mexico and back home in the United States. It's the right thing to do," the president said earlier Friday.

stop this radical, liberal.....miden and obama has done nothing to stop newtown, it could happen tommorrow...they are to blame for newtown, not secured schools yet...no quards, no secured entrances...it should have been done after the colorado shooting.s...then he stands there acticing tough,....what a joke
maybe this guiy should try to get jobs back home for americans...instead he persues his taking rights away from americans...
Gun control really means gun confiscation.
Believe me I dont' care to say that about my own party but the truth is the truth.
Biden is as much of a subversive to America as exists in this country. He is selling out to the criminals who want no opposition to their crimes.
CNN – why don't you guys get some better photos – instead of this crybaby ? prepare for a shocker in 2014 – when mid terms rolls around – I suspect Obama will speak from the bully pulpit / the megaphone -/T.V. / radio / anywhere else – so he can get a huge turnout – like he done, right before the election. Well, I guess it's going to be 2014 before we can move this country forward.
Why don't you get Congress to take out section 122 Firearms Transfers and you might have a chance this doesn't have a thing to do with background checks but just like Obamacare I would say most people who voted for the bill didn't read it including yourself.
Before any one makes stupid comments read the bill first or at least this section then you might have the right to same something if you can understand English.
The bill is on the Senates website.
by the way Larry in Houston this Country has gone backwards since Obama and his out of control spending and no leadership buddies have taken office.
He did win by less than 2% of the vote but that just shows you how stupid people really are.
"Gun control really means gun confiscation.
Believe me I dont' care to say that about my own party but the truth is the truth."
Psssst, nobody believes it when people post pretending to be from one side and yet spew the other side's talking points verbatim. Not only is it not credible, but it's also infantile.
This nation needs GUN-BAN LAWS. Period.
The country has gone backwards the last 80 years. If it was moving forward there wouldn't be a 17 Trillion Dollar Federal Debt. It is only mentally unbalanced people that have comitted gun violance. So, will we move forward next election. Not as long as the inmates are in charge of the asylum. After all look at where we are after the Liberal's got the keys to the store.
Good keep pushing Biden, the American people will do the rest come 2014. The American people will get the correct Senators that listen to the people in their district in office this time.
It say's something about what the majority of america wants, when a majority of the senate can't vote for passing the bill because they're scared of not being elected, because the MAJORITY of american's are against doing this. If only it was like this with the other Issues the senate and house. I'm sorry to those that are in the minority of these Issues but that's how the democracy that we love works EVERYONE HAS A SAY BUT THE MAJORITY RULE.
OUR VP failed the job once already. Now he vows to retry??
You might think Joe ain't got much to do but sit around and wait for another Sandy Hook to Happen so the liberals can grandstand some more with the victims of such a terrible tragedy. The current potus and vp will use and think like this to promote there cause. They just don't care where they get a prop and the more of a tear jerker it is the better they like it. Sad But True.
Joe don't seem to have anything important to do, so maybe he should try once more to tread on the 2nd Amendment.
He will wait for some props to use like the Sandy Hook terrible tragedy to exploit something that most likely will not have much to do with firearms, but lots to do with mental issues. Guns, cars, trains, Airplanes, golf clubs, don't kill people, but the crazy's out there who uses them as a crutch to inflict harm on the innocent sure do.
Ron, Liberal, Rick, Ed ... you claim President Obama is the worst president in history ... and yet your party is so freakin' great that you couldn't float a candidate who could beat him?
GOP and their followers = A pack of losers, if there ever was one.
Biden will drop in office and the poles if he pass a bad bill both party have to work on this together democrat and republican me i agree wit need new gun backround check law but done in the right way wit both democrat and republican.
No one has taken 1 gun away from any honest person in the U.S. Get your facts right
"Gun control means gun confiscation" as one poster says.
Yes it does but only via background checks on any sale however done "ONLY" tries to stop criminals and those who are mentally incapable too young in maturity from buying /getting a weapon and tries to ensure that non cooperative states don't resist a federal law but enforce it.
The reason the NRA oppose the legislation is that it wants each state to define its definition and application of the second amendment.
Oooops it seems that some Republican or democrat no ( gun control) voter reps/ senators could be in trouble not only primary wise but re-election wise. Kelly Ayotte for one.
CNN its not as one sided as you portray that a primary in a " gun state" means a loss if you support these gun measures. Yes it might mean no support from the party hierachy but does not mean you cannot stand and fight and let those that matter, the Voters decide.
