Palin fires up NRA crowd, hits Obama for using Newtown families

(CNN) - Sarah Palin blasted President Barack Obama and gun control advocates Friday, blaming them for "exploiting" recent mass shooting tragedies to promote their political agenda.

Speaking to a welcoming crowd at the National Rifle Association convention in Houston, the folksy former governor from Alaska also used chewing tobacco at one point to draw some laughs.

Palin, wearing a shirt that read "Women hunt," was one of several speakers at the NRA gathering who targeted the Obama administration and some lawmakers for wanting tighter firearm restrictions after the Newtown elementary school massacre.

In the days leading up to the Senate's April 17 vote on gun control proposals, the president invited families of Newtown victims to fly on Air Force One to Washington and lobby Congress.

Newtown families also participated in media interviews and appeared in an ad made by Mayors Against Illegal Guns, the pro-gun control group co-chaired by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

When the upper chamber ultimately fell short of the 60 votes needed to pass a bipartisan compromise to expand the background check system, some of those family members stood behind the president not long after the vote as he chided Capitol Hill for what he described as a "shameful day in Washington."

Palin argued the president was practicing the "politics of emotion" by "flying in grieving parents on Air Force One, making them backdrops in his perpetual campaign-style press events."

Par for the course, the 2008 Republican vice presidential nominee faulted the media for being a "reliable, poodle-skirted cheerleader for a president who writes the book on exploiting tragedy."

Politics of emotion, she argued, won't make the country safer. "It's the opposite of leadership. It's the manipulation of the people by the politicians for their own political ends. It's not just self-serving. It's destructive and it must stop."

Charging the president with being disingenuous in the wake of the shooting was a running theme throughout the day at the NRA. Palin added Obama was ignoring another tragedy.

"We could use a bit more emotion by the way of what goes on every single day on the streets of cities like Chicago and New York," Palin said.

Speaking of New York, Palin took the opportunity to take a swipe at Bloomberg, a mayor she has vehemently opposes for what she describes as his nanny state politics. In her last big speech at a major conservative gathering in March, Palin made headlines for sipping a "Big Gulp" on stage, a knock against New York's ban against certain large sugary drinks.

"Now I see that the mayor of New York now wants to ban public displays of legal tobacco products," she said, referring to his recent push to keep tobacco products out of sight at stores in order to de-glamorize the product.

"I tell ya," she said, as she pulling out a pack of chewing tobacco. "Don't make me do it."

With the crowd roaring, she put the pack back in her pocket.

"It's funny because Todd's been looking for this all morning."

Sarah Palin has such star power it is a real shame she allows her "handlers" to use her only on a narrow frame of issues like gun laws and restraining the size of sugary drinks. I keep waiting for her and the staff that assist her to work up a series of speechs on public employee unions and the outsized payments and benefits public employees have extracted at the taxpayers expense. Or maybe she could take a real stand on tax policy to enhance investment. What about the concept of giving everyone in America a debit card to buy their healthcare and watch the consumer reinserted into the purchase decision for health care. All of these are things Mrs. Palin has spoken about but we hear none of it any more. It's just wah wah wah about guns and junk. Talk about wasting potential.

Palin is great. Anyone that is hated by liberals and mainstream press you gotta love them. After all this chick could knock out Obozo and Bloomberg. Her son served in the miltary on the front lines unlike boy Biden the lawyer in the green zone.

We don't need fear mongering, money, dumb arguments, and endless blabbering about "my freedom" and "my rights". We will come back with common sense, compassion, and let our votes speak.

Funny how Palin accuses the President of using the politics of emotion; when her entire political 'career' is based on the politics of emotion. Sarah Palin is truly the queen of the poor white trash red state trailer park.

And the NRA did not exploit this! The minions of the arms manufaturers use it to try to sell more guns by arming teachers and janitors in every school. Hypocrits!

Twenty years ago there were three hundred million guns out there. Lord knows how many are out there now. Someone explain how you are going to find out who owns them and their mental condition. There are adequate gun laws out there that are not enforced. Guns are and always have been easy to get. It is like trying to stop the twelve million aliens that the congress is now about to give amnesty. It should have been controlled years ago and was not, now we throw up our hands and give them what they want. Someone out there tell me how you are going to control 300 million guns. You cannot and you know it. Criminals can easily buy guns and will own them regardless of any new restrictions. The ACLU got mentally ill people out of jail and now some of them own guns. I lived in a very remote section of Virginia and had a conceal and carry permit. It would have taken at least 20 minutes for a response for assistance to arrive and that is why I had the conceal and carry. Disarm the people and tyranny will follow. Did you see the SWAT teams in Boston? If that was not a violation of Posse Comitatus tell me what is.

Why does the NRA need a rally convention anyway? (never ask a question you do not already know the answer to)
Tell me if I leave out a few: Paranoid, afraid of losing weapons, "The I need a gun because" reasoning, All wrong. Sarah Palin didn't need to be there because she thought it was in support of having weapons and hunting to survive. Wrong, too. NRA is all about ongoing support for gun manufacturers.

"Sarah Palin has such star power it is a real shame she allows her "handlers"" LOL
EXACT timed speech with the same propaganda the NRA put out today and..her "star power", or 15 minutes of fame was done a 4 years ago. She isn't intelligent, she commits to nothing but money and it's shocking that anyone finds her attractive in personality or looks, as the prior removes the latter in any and all ways if one is "grown" in their mind.

    @joejeffrey
Right. So Bush used 9/11 as an excuse to invade Iraq, so he can show the country a big enough response, and that's leadreship, but when Obama reminds the nation that the extremist ideology of the NRA costs real people their lives, that's emotionalism. What a disgusting hypocrite she is.

Thank you , how soon some forget .

Ashley . Go back to journalism school and learn how to write. You sound so catty in this article. I am not interested in hearing some catty female going meow. I am interested in the "NEWS" period. If you do not believe me take this article you wrote back to your most critical Journalism Professors, I assume you had at least one in collage, and have him critique it.

Glad the NRA keeps peddling out fringe people and D listers to support their cause of putting assualt weapons in the hands of grade schoolers claiming this will reduce gun violence. I believe it's time that the American people wake up and ignore their lobbyists.

    WWII

Should be dealing with the real problem at Newtown... Mentally ill people with access to guns. Instead of dealing with law abiding citizens.. Look at what the city with the stiffest gun legislation in the nation is going through. Chicago. Multiple murders every day. Have to deal with the mentally ill and criminals.
