Palin fires up NRA crowd, hits Obama for using Newtown families

(CNN) - Sarah Palin blasted President Barack Obama and gun control advocates Friday, blaming them for "exploiting" recent mass shooting tragedies to promote their political agenda.

Speaking to a welcoming crowd at the National Rifle Association convention in Houston, the folksy former governor from Alaska also used chewing tobacco at one point to draw some laughs.

Palin, wearing a shirt that read "Women hunt," was one of several speakers at the NRA gathering who targeted the Obama administration and some lawmakers for wanting tighter firearm restrictions after the Newtown elementary school massacre.

In the days leading up to the Senate's April 17 vote on gun control proposals, the president invited families of Newtown victims to fly on Air Force One to Washington and lobby Congress.

Newtown families also participated in media interviews and appeared in an ad made by Mayors Against Illegal Guns, the pro-gun control group co-chaired by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

When the upper chamber ultimately fell short of the 60 votes needed to pass a bipartisan compromise to expand the background check system, some of those family members stood behind the president not long after the vote as he chided Capitol Hill for what he described as a "shameful day in Washington."

Palin argued the president was practicing the "politics of emotion" by "flying in grieving parents on Air Force One, making them backdrops in his perpetual campaign-style press events."

Par for the course, the 2008 Republican vice presidential nominee faulted the media for being a "reliable, poodle-skirted cheerleader for a president who writes the book on exploiting tragedy."

Politics of emotion, she argued, won't make the country safer. "It's the opposite of leadership. It's the manipulation of the people by the politicians for their own political ends. It's not just self-serving. It's destructive and it must stop."

Charging the president with being disingenuous in the wake of the shooting was a running theme throughout the day at the NRA. Palin added Obama was ignoring another tragedy.

"We could use a bit more emotion by the way of what goes on every single day on the streets of cities like Chicago and New York," Palin said.

Speaking of New York, Palin took the opportunity to take a swipe at Bloomberg, a mayor she has vehemently opposes for what she describes as his nanny state politics. In her last big speech at a major conservative gathering in March, Palin made headlines for sipping a "Big Gulp" on stage, a knock against New York's ban against certain large sugary drinks.

"Now I see that the mayor of New York now wants to ban public displays of legal tobacco products," she said, referring to his recent push to keep tobacco products out of sight at stores in order to de-glamorize the product.

"I tell ya," she said, as she pulling out a pack of chewing tobacco. "Don't make me do it."

With the crowd roaring, she put the pack back in her pocket.

"It's funny because Todd's been looking for this all morning."

    If the personage of Sarah Palin is something that "fires up" or in anyway actually represents the NRA and gun owners in general- they become the very best argument for registration, background checks, ammo and clip limit, and insurance. Little miss "second-amendment solutions" is very representative of the anti-American Conservative movement. Some of these folks should be in Gitmo, not promoting public violence.

    Sarah Palin is a national joke. It's completely unsurprising that an organization such as the NRA would think she has any credibility. She is a good speaker, I agree, but she's a snake oil salesman.

    @Jacob Ransone–Palin has no potential. She is an ignorant woman who knows nothing about world affairs, history, or any other subject required of a statesperson. Her only talent is making stupid statements to incite other stupid people. She talks about what goes on on the streets of major cities every day and she does not see the connection to gun control legislation. No one in our government is the least bit interested in taking guns away from hunters. They are interested in taking guns out if the hands of criminals and the mentally ill. How does our government achieve the goal of taking guns out of the hands of criminals and the mentally ill when Conservatives in congress block any sensible action to achieve this goal? There is no accountability for gun owners or gun sellers. No requirement to keep records and no background checks for an industry that seeks only profit from the sale of products designed and sold specifically to kill. The first responsibility of the government is to protect its citizens. Look at any other industry. There are rules and regulations in place to protect the public. Now, look at the gun industry. Why does an industry who produces weapons designed to kill not have equal accountability?

    44% of Republicans believe that there will be an armed conflict within our own country. Any person who believes that he can go against the government of the United States with a gun does not possess the mental capabilities necessary to own a gun. And, these are the people the Republicans represent. The stupid, the ignorant and the people easily swayed by Sarah Palin.

    It's telling that Ms. Palin doesn't recognize that "using people for political/financial gain" is EXACTLY what she's been doing since 2008 – raking in huge sums of money selling snake oil to the uninformed and stoking up all the irrational fears of the scary black man. If she believes all this, she's an idiot. If she doesn't, she's a manipulative, money-grubbing hypocrite. You decide.

    @Jacob Ransone

    "I keep waiting for her and the staff that assist her to work up a series of speechs on public employee unions and the outsized payments and benefits public employees have extracted at the taxpayers expense."
    ==================================
    "Governor" Palin and "Mayor" Palin were public employees paid for by the taxpayer. "VP Candidate" Palin made a financial killing during and after that debacle. "Fox News" Palin got canned for being a moron – even by Fox News standards. She now sells books and speaking engagements based on distortions, overly-simplified solutions to complex problems, and mindless sound-bites designed to pander to the under-educated right-wingers. I wouldn't count on her as your messenger.

    @DogWithoutSlippers: Aw, so cute, that you really believe that! Sarah Palin (and the Tea Party in general) wouldn't throw water on you if you were on fire, unless you forked over some cash first. Sarah Palin is a grifter, a hypocrite and a Really Bad parent. How's that for some truth telling?

    Gov Palin speaks the truth and the lefties heads explode! Palin haters are such a hate filled bunch. STOP attacking her personally. If you have a problem with the substance of what she said that is one thing, but the personal attacks make you look ignorant and bitter.

    Today's NRA is the old west equivalent of Tombstones cowboys, laughing and swaggering, incapable of rational thought, running amok in the town. They don't care that the majority want change. They whine about the government taking their guns...hogwash with a capitol H...new laws won't prevent shootings...duh and double duh, did you flunk logic or what? With that reasoning we should just a abolish all criminal laws because they don't prevent the crimes from happening. They didn't learn from the last election. And some democrats have allowed themselves to be bullied by the ceegar chomping town bullies...it is useless to condemn them because they indulge in the same sociopathic thinking the original cowboys did...

    GOP just keeps on ignoring the American people.

    This time, by a huge margin, the American people support putting some kind of common sense REAL background checks with waiting periods around the right to own a firearm.

    And the GOP just cozy's up to one of its favorite lobbyists, the NRA.

    All future massacres will be on your hands, GOP.
