LaPierre: 'How many Bostonians wish they had a gun two weeks ago?'

(CNN) – While investigators focus on developments leading up to the Boston Marathon bombing, gun rights advocates zeroed in on the tense days after the deadly attack and the frantic manhunt for one of the suspects.

National Rifle Association Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre said residents were "imprisoned" in their homes with no means to protect themselves while police searched for Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.

His capture four days after the April 15 bombing was preceded by a wild Boston-area gun battle and chase during which his older brother and second suspect, Tamerlan, was killed.

A subsequent law enforcement dragnet paralyzed the city and close-in suburbs as the hunt for the surviving Tsarnev, considered armed and extremely dangerous, intensified and residents were warned to stay indoors.

"How many Bostonians wished they had a gun two weeks ago?" LaPierre asked in a speech at the NRA's convention in Houston Saturday.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was captured hiding in a boat in Watertown, Massachusetts.

"Boston proves it. When brave law enforcement officers did their job in that city so courageously, good guys with guns stopped terrorists with guns," he said.

The NRA is fighting efforts in Congress to expand background checks and pass other gun control measures prompted by the Newtown school massacre last December.

This man is a disgrace. A podium full of whack jobs in Housto this weekend. Plain, Perry, Cruz, and this nut job. A real testament to the principles of the GOP.

@Marie MD If you were responding to my post it should be noted that the "neighbors" were from all over the world, and any crazy with a gun might have shot anyone running away from the explosions. I would not have wanted to find out as the NRA leadership seems to have wanted.

Probably many Bostonians DID wanted to have a gun with them, probably many did have (even if it was some 'weapon of occasion' like baseball bats) as they realized that the dragnet was getting too close of their homes...
In the end what was the weapon that helped the guy being caught?
    A phone call.

PS: Marie MD – Heard what the grandmother of the kids about the tragic incident?
    'It was God's will'...

And they were going to do "what" with them, toad. Shoot each other, or maybe plain clothed cops? Or possibly they could Stand Their Ground and shoot one of their neighbors kids. I do not think the police would have appreciated a bunch of scared people out roaming streets with guns at that point, they handled it just fine with unarmed citizen assistance. What is wrong with you, besides you'll say anything for a buck.

While conducting a door to door search, it was very fortunate that no law enforcement officer was hurt or killed by a gun toting nervous and triggered happy civilian defending his home. We have more to fear from gun owners with a "John Wayne" mentality and fast trigger finger.

What I wish is for LaPierre to go to Florida and be confronted by an armed citizen who sees him as the imminent threat he is – and act accordingly.

How would armed Bostonians have prevented two loonies from planting IEDs? Are folks supposed to gun down everyone they see with a backpack?

I live not far from the Clackamas Mall where a gunman with an assault weapon killed two people then killed himself. We can carry concealed weapons in Oregon (including my husband, who is a licensed carrier) and statistically, given there were 10,000 people at the mall that day, several were carrying. And yet not one of them returned fire on the gunman.

Why? Because things don't play out like in the movies. The man who was killed was shot from behind; the woman who was killed ran to his aid and was murdered on the spot. Everyone else was running away as fast as they could. (I know this for a fact, because the wife of my husband's a co-worker was there; the teenager who was shot and survived was literally right behind her as she fled. She said it was chaos as people tried to flee.)

Everyone thinks that if we just had more people packing heat, these massacres wouldn't happen. It's time we eliminated assault weapons, closed the gun show loophole that allows unlimited purchase of weapons without a background check, and required background checks on ALL gun purchases.

@conservboy99: "libs all the same-apologists for a failed prez & his idiot cabinet. 0nly history will judge benghazi & boston fairly not a bunch of foolish lib commentors."

So you're blaming President Obama for the Boston attacks?

How about GHW Bush for leaving military bases in Saudi Arabia – which radicalized bin Laden? Or GW Bush for invading Iraq and Abu Ghraib and the radicalization that followed?

And get off Benghazi – not one of you right-wing nutjobs has ever explained why President Obama would EVER endanger American lives – especially so close to last year's presidential election.

We don't have to wait for history to judge all you GOP lackeys that you've all been played for fools – and don't have the stones to admit it.

How can you tell if someone is a "good guy" without a background check?

How many Bostonians wish the two brothers were never allowed firearms, would be a better question to ask .

Where and how did they buy them ? And how would having a gun have helped any Bostonains two weeks ago?

What an absolutely dumb statement! 'How many Bostonians wish they had a gun two weeks ago?' Who would they shoot? A bomb went off not someone breaking into their home. Background check might have prevented the nuts from buying guns in their shoot out with the police! The propaganda that slithers out of LaPierre's mouth is mind boggling!

  17. Amazing

Just because someone has a gun, it doesn't mean they will always be able to defend themselves. I would remind this nut case that young MIT officer was trained and armed. Unfortunately, he lost his life protecting the people if Boston. There is NOT anyone proposing to take away anyone's guns. Yet, this nut job continues to spout false information. I hope Americans of all political stripes stand up and vote out those Senators who voted against expanded background checks, a sensible first step.

The president cannot do these things without the help of both parties.....The Republicans have made NO move to help in any way.. This is a twp party system and one party is getting blamed for everything that happens.......... we all know that the Repubs made it very clear at the beginning of his term that they WOULD NOT help this president!!!!They had better not turn their backs on this because if the country is overwhelmed by this madness....the Repubs will pay dearly in 2014 and 2016!!!!!!!.... THERE IS NO DOUBT!!!

"When brave law enforcement officers did their job in that city so courageously, good guys with guns stopped terrorists with guns"

Never mind the fact police riddled the surrounded houses with bullets with complete disregard for civilians that might be occupying them.......

And those 2 cops who shot the wrong car up in the Dorner manhunt?

Job well done, though.... Executed flawlessly... Good guys with guns can never harm innocent people.
