NRA airs 'thank you' ad for Ayotte for gun vote

(CNN) – Sen. Kelly Ayotte, the New Hampshire Republican who's been derided by gun control groups for her "no" vote on expanding background checks last month, is getting some support on the airwaves with a new television spot from the National Rifle Association.

The 30-second ad, airing as part of a $25,000 buy on Manchester-based WMUR, seeks to dispel the notion that Ayotte is opposed to new gun laws.

"Kelly Ayotte voted for a bipartisan plan to make background checks more effective," a narrator is the spot says. "Ayotte voted for a bipartisan plan to reform our broken mental health system. Ayotte voted for more resources to prosecute criminals who use guns. Kelly Ayotte stands with prosecutors and police for New Hampshire values."

The ad, along with an op-ed penned by Ayotte, stress the senator's past votes on measures repairing a background check system she regards as broken, as well as making prosecutions easier for criminals who use guns.

The former prosecutor and New Hampshire attorney general drew on her law enforcement experience as proof of her inside knowledge of laws that work.

"It's clear that criminals who attempt to illegally purchase firearms aren't being prosecuted as they should be – and have not been for years," Ayotte wrote on the local website Bedford Patch. "This sends the message to criminals that there won't be any consequences when they try to get their hands on guns."

"Misleading television and radio ads are counterproductive and only help to poison this important discussion," she continued in the essay.

The response from Ayotte and the NRA comes after a spate of attack ads criticizing her for her April 17 vote against a bipartisan measure that would have expanded background checks to gun shows and internet sales.

The group founded by former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and her husband began airing radio ads accusing Ayotte of "ignoring the will of the people." Giffords was seriously wounded in the Tucson, Arizona shooting in 2011.

A spot from New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg's Mayors Against Illegal Guns takes a similar approach, charging Ayotte with giving "criminals a pass" – a hard blow for the former state attorney general who ran largely on her tough-on-crime record.

And Organizing for Action, the political outlet formed from Obama's presidential campaign, took out ads online encouraging supporters to "Remind Senator Ayotte: You work for New Hampshire, not the gun lobby."

Wednesday's ad from the NRA isn't the first time the group has praised Ayotte – the gun rights organization praised Ayotte for her "no" vote on background checks in a radio spot late last month. The ad thanked the senator for her "courage to oppose misguided gun control laws that would not have prevented Sandy Hook."

CNN's Todd Sperry, Sara Fischer and Ashley Killough contributed to this report.

why is it that the misdirected outcry for gun confiscation and draconian restrictions seems to eminate from american jews (bloomberg, feinstein, boxer, emanual, schumer, lautenberg, levin, lieberman, israel, waxman, soros etc.) and their political running dogs? is it really a conspiracy to disarm the goyim, and if so, why? how sad.

The same sort of "receipt" that obama's supporters (all presidents supporters really) get with their cabinet appointments?

There is a political cartoon that displays this so much better. We have the democrats saying that guns need to be controlled even if one life is saved the law must be changed to limit guns. Then turn to abortion where democrats want women to have as many abortions as they want.

Odd that children are used as a tool to get what they want in one topic. On another topic they are nothing more then excess tissue. A parasite even.

Just to be clear, people make mistakes. Abortions are a means to correct that mistake. However, the same person having 4,5,6+ abortions is what I have an issue with. The morning after pill and abortion should not be the go to method of birth control. Condoms (both male and female), and other means of birth control should be the go to methods. As for gun rights, we do have background checks now. Only personal sales (you sell your gun to a friend) are where a background check is not made. You cannot just go to a store and walk out with a gun without a check being made. Don't believe me, try it. Internet sites, they check. I walked into a store, that store ran one. People I know who went to gun shows and wanted to buy had a background check made. Other then anti gun people and the MSM (who is promoting more anti gun stories) are saying there are no background checks.

You can't vote for an agenda, which does not fix the problem.
    ---------------------
So what exactly is the problem? Lack of enforcement? The Bush administration cut the enforcement budget during both terms, and the Tea Party cut it further during the Obama administration. How can you enforce without the means to do so? Do you plan on funding better enforcement?

I am a liberal and the Dem position on this issue absolutely kills me. What a waste of political capital. Maybe the Democrats do not want 2014 to be a victory. The gun issue is the one wedge issue that the Republicans will use to keep or gain seats in both houses. This political cycle continues to prove that both parties are happy to take our rights. Liberal positions are usually smart, well educated, nuanced, and sophisticated. The Democrats’ position on guns reeks of ignorance. This is the Dem version of the anti-evolution peoples on the right, absolutely crazy. There are very compelling reasons liberals, and free citizens in general, should want to maintain the right to bear arms. All Liberals, please read a book by a Civil Rights activist named Robert F Williams to highlight only a few of the reasons that NO citizen (left or right) should want to erode the second amendment. I hate that the left has claimed this stupidity. Democrats stating that the gun issue will win 2014 for them is like the Republicans believing that Rick Santorum and anti-evolution is the answer for the right. What a joke.

Thank you Ayotte and the NRA for protecting our Second Amendment Rights. Gabby giffarts, mark kelly ,bloomberg are socialists/liberals. They are not smart enough to tell the rest of us what we should do or not do.

The morning after pill is no different than a chemical condom: it prevents pregnancy from even happening in the first place. It is not a chemical abortion.

Now that the NRA has issued the "thank you" ad to Ayotte, Everyone knows Ayotte is a lapdog for the NRA and they have sent her a check for her vote. That is why Ayottes polls number are still droping like a rock.

Setting aside that anyone who starts a post with "I'm a [party/political leaning]" is immediately assumed to be a faker...please, tell us what you have trouble understanding about polls showing two things pretty clearly:

People like Ayotte who voted against the background checks have suffered a measurable and substantial dip in their approval ratings as a direct result of their vote AND

People who voted for the background checks legislation have enjoyed a measurable bump in approval ratings.

What don't you get about that? Even Jeff Flake (R-AZ), the single most unpopular Senator in the US, had to finally stop denying it and fighting with the pollsters and, not only did he admit that he got nailed for voting against the legislation, but he's now singing quite a different tune...saying he'd vote for it this time if they just took out the internet background checks.

"So what exactly is the problem? Lack of enforcement? The Bush administration cut the enforcement budget during both terms, and the Tea Party cut it further during the Obama administration"

Not to mention the fact that the GOP/Teatrolls filibuster the appointment of a director to the ATF every single time...such that there's not been one (only an "acting" director) for several years now. They are purposefully abusing the filibuster and other procedural nonsense to literally break the parts of the gov't that they don't like...then turn around and say "OMG IT'S BROKEN!!!!" as if they aren't the reason that is so.
