(CNN) - Deplaning in Austin, Texas, Thursday, President Barack Obama was greeted by Gov. Rick Perry, a Republican who made a bid for last year's GOP presidential nomination.

The focus of Thursday's visit is job growth - something Perry has touted as a chief accomplishment of his time in office. Speaking after greeting Obama, the governor said the president was smart to visit Austin.

"We are doing things right in Texas and I think the president is wise to come here and take a look at it," he said, noting Obama had recently visited the Lone Star state to attend a memorial service for the first responders killed in the West, Texas fertilizer plant explosion.

A vocal critic of Obama's, Perry most recently railed against the president's gun control proposals during last week's National Rifle Association annual meeting in Houston.

"I realize to those who don't understand the issue, gun laws may look like an easy fix, and might even make some of them feel like these laws do something to solve a problem. Except they don't fix anything. They may win a news cycle, or help our president score political points, but they do nothing but make it harder for law-abiding Americans to own guns," Perry said.

Perry..."they do nothing but make it harder for law-abiding Americans to own guns" about we make it harder for law-abiding Americans to "SELL" guns to anyone, no questions asked, no background checks, no paper trail......starting to get the picture yet.....or would you rather just complain that the bad guys will always get guns without doing a "root cause analysis" to figure out where most criminals get thier guns...???

  10. Not Impressed

He flew all that way to talk about the government creating university/industry partnerships in a town where one of the nation's best universities has been doing on its own for decades. Oh, and he needs Congress to give him a billion dollars to make it happen because he can't figure out who to find that much money in the multi-trillion budget he managers. This is not what a leader looks like.

is obama going there to tell perry he is going to shut down all that dirty oil stuff and turn it all into green energy companies producing $200,000 electric cars for hollywood stars?

Well of course we can not have the President scoring political points.

We've come to far to let that happen not.
Who cares if it hurts the country?

TX produces around 40% – not 1/3 – of all new jobs – employers are starving here, for workers who are knowledgeable in the field they are looking for – if u don't believe me, go to houston chronicle dot com
AND – a "lone star welcome" well, Dominican – I've been here for almost 8 yrs, from the welfare state – and I don't know what the heck THAT is !!!

I dont see how expanding background checks makes it harder for "law abiding citizens" to own guns. These gun nuts are living in a fantasy world. Instead of Gov. Perry worrying about the President's agenda, he needs to get to the bottom of that explosion that happened in West Texas.

Texans do love to congratulate themselves on job creation and their economy. There's nothing special about it, Texas just HAPPENS to have the oil industry as one of it's main industries, and they're going like gang busters. That's also what helps them on the tax situation, all that corporate tax income.

I really do not like Gov. Perry's patronizing tone in gun control remarks. The only solutions coming from the right are more guns and let's better enforce the laws that don't exist. Oh yeah, let's cut the funding for gun control enforcement, too.

Texas has a 'lone star' on the flag. I think its the same flag that was used when they were The Republic of Texas.
Welcome to the Lone Star State, in other words – a Lone Star welcome. Just as easy to say Welcome to
    Texas, but...................

Oh really? The man who can't remember which parts of the federal government he wants to dismantle. Mr "I forgot the EPA" Perry should be having second thoughts about that after the explosion in West Texas.
