First hearings on IRS targeting Friday

(CNN) – The House Ways and Means Committee will hold a hearing Friday on the Internal Revenue Service's admission it applied extra scrutiny to conservative groups applying for tax exempt status.

The acting commissioner of the IRS, Steve Miller, and the inspector general for the Treasury Department, J. Russell George, will be the only witnesses at Friday's hearing, according to a press release from the committee.

"The American public expects the Internal Revenue Service to be apolitical in its enforcement of our tax laws," said Rep. Dave Camp, the committee's chairman. "News that the agency admits it targeted American taxpayers based on politics is both astounding and appalling. The Committee on Ways and Means will get to the bottom of this practice and ensure it never takes place again."

The ranking Democrat on the committee, Rep. Sander Levin, added "it is essential that there be a thorough and bipartisan investigation and effective remedial action."

This whole affair sounds to me like someone singled out conservative applications and expedited them. They were all approved, which to me speaks volumes.

I want to know when political parties of any philosophy got tax free status. There is a much bigger story here.

No doubt. Republicans have been trying to even the score ever since the Nixon/Agnew disgraces.

Politics is an industry thanks to the suprem court .

    non profti for profit .

Please explane to me how this works ?

FreedomWorks is a conservative non-profit organization based in Washington D.C., United States. FreedomWorks trains volunteers, assists in campaigns
Former House majority leader Dick Armey says he took an $8 million consulting deal in return for leaving the conservative organization FreedomWorks because the group was "dishonest" and because he "couldn't leave with empty pockets."

    Good Job IRS !

Well, that was fast. Rightly, too: whether it was expediting tax-exempt status for conservatives, or an attempt to prevent tax-exempt status, it needs to stop. Right now. The solution? NO ONE gets tax-exempt status. Including charities and most especially churches. And let's stop the whole charity write-off thing every April, while we're at it. That's not charity - that's the government paying for your good intentions.

Hearings, and more Hearings. The only thing they do is always reactive never proactive. I want hearings on term limits enough already.

It has happened before, and will happen again, most likely under the GOP administrations where it usually takes place. The fact that you can be scrutinized closely for using certain words in your literature reminds me of an FBI watch list. I don't care if an organization is liberal or conservative, this is a politization of the IRS that is unacceptable and leads me to the conclusion that whomever heads the IRS in teh futureshould be taken directly from the Civil Service and should never be a political appointee.

This should lead to even further efforts to repeal Obamacare. The IRS cannot be trusted with American citizens' healthcare decisions. Many of us knew this before this IRS scandal was revealed (and didn't vote this man back into office) – but it should be clear to all now. Pelosi, Obama, and all those who drafted that monster seek to debilitate us as a nation – and control us. First, take away our guns, next – penalize those who are against the Obama agenda through IRS penalties and audits, next – refuse healthcare tests and treatments to those who oppose the Obama agenda. Americans need to think for themselves and stop listening to all the rhetoric coming out of the White House. This man refuses to be accountable for anything. But we will hold him accountable.

    Explain to me why:
Doug Shulman isn't testifying. Appointed by GW Bush in Mar 2008 for 5 years.
But, he left the job early in Nov 2012. Why?
If this started in 2011, he was still there. Did he "target" these conservative groups to expedite their tax status?
This can work both ways, you know.

It's obvious that Obama is NOT the president of everyone in this country. Things like this prove it over and over again.

If Obama had a son he'd be just like Kermit Gosnell wouldn't he.

I believe this tax exempt status is for non-political groups. Yet the IRS is accused of attacking them on a political basis.

Can you attack a non-political group based on their politics?

I'm not an expert on such matters; if anyone can clarify the matter, take a shot.

Why do they not publish the complete list of all 300 organizations? It makes a more incindiary headline to publish that of 300 organizations, less than 1/3 of them were conservative, yet somehow they were the "targets"? The fact that the IRS director at the time this was going on was a Bush appointee would lead me to believe that this would not be something that rose to that level within the IRS. Why would a conservative go after conservative groups. Frankly, all of these organizations regardless of political slant need to be scrutinized as the abuse is rampant.

How well have the 30+ efforts to repeal it gone? How about working on getting a budget through that actually has a prayer of getting through, or do you just enjoy pi$$ing in the wind? And how well did your attempts to hold him accountable work in the past? De-politicize the IRS first so this does not happen again: oh yes, that would require work, intellect, and original thoughts: the Righties have all but 3 of those qualities.

    "Explain to me why:

Of course he's not. He's not testifying yet and Issa will probably try to prevent him from testifying since he was commissioner for most of these accusations. Just like he's now demanding PRIVATE depositions of Ambassador Pickering and Admiral Mullen on Benghazi...because he doesn't want to put them on the stand before Congress and have them testifying PUBLICLY and risk them saying anything that contradicts the GOP/Teatrolls' carefully manufactured narrative. No no..instead, he'll abuse his power over the Committee to try to keep the depositions secret and only release cherry-picked out-of-context quotes from it that he think support his already-made-prior-to-any-evidence conclusions. It'll be several months before the whole depositions get released and Issa and the rest have to do any walking back of the way they used them...if any...since the MSM will likely give the whole thing the IOKIYAR treatment.
